Star Wars: The Force Unleashed

So that Overlord may once again spread misinformation, and also to show off the new trailer which describes (and shows) the technology behind the game. It's all looking 'pretty' at this stage, but I'm more curious as to the face behind the main character you play. Looks like actor who played Crashdown from BSG and the military guy from The Mist.

That's because it is Crashdown. He's providing the voice for the character.

and providing the face

That new video is fantastic.
That game is going to be the unreal.
I have been given a fresh start. I'll give it a few weeks, then get someone again.

Just wait and see.
I read earlier today that the Wii version will have 5 extra levels that the 360 and PS3 don't get. Among them, a Jedi Temple level.
What's so special about that video? I see advances rag doll for the most part. I get the feeling this game is going to be forced(PUN!) from the get go. Darth Vader's super secret apprentice that nobody knows about? Cool, but shoe horned in like crazy.

I thought he was great in both and as Neil Perry in Dexter.

He was creepy as hell.

I think they're making the mistake of using DMM and Euphoria as gimmicks rather than gameplay devices. If I can cut a tree in half with my lightsaber and then pick up the sliced off half and throw it at bad guys, then that's cool. If there's a locked door in my way and I can just force push it open...then that's cool. I just feel like this game is going to limit how far you can go with the tech, which isn't fair.

I'm not bitin', asshole, but you did get a brief amount of geek rage to flare up. Fortunately I had some Tuck's® on hand.

Ummm....you're getting too suspicious. It appears to be true:

GAH!!! Here I thought you took another nubile apprentice! Well, that news is a little irksome.
I can't play five poorly conceived levels on a shitty port? Bollocks!
I'm thinking the DMM technology might need a little review if you force hurl a stormtrooper into a TIE fighter's wing and somehow the entire fucking ship explodes.
To be fair, TIE fighters were made from egg cartons and pipe cleaners to save on construction costs.
The bursting into flames part still tickles the elmo.
Vanity Fair article on the game. Sounds quite interesting.
Good read, but I can't tell you how sick I am of being told that I'm going "inside the movie." Any game that actually gives you that feeling usually aren't based on a movie.
The preview videos look cool and all but I think the developers are continuing to overpromise, especially with the new word that there is a "shocking" plot twist on par with "Luke, I am your father" in the game.

Here's to hoping that the shocking plot twist turns out to be that the prequel trilogy was all a bacta-induced fever-dream of Luke's.

Got my new GamePro in the mail yesterday and there's a big cover story on The Force Unleashed. While I intend on playing the 360 version, I can't help but be seduced by the Wii version, too. In the article, they actually gives us a full page dedicated to the control scheme, with pictures showing how to move the Wiimote in order to do 16 different things. I have yet to read the article, but they have gone ahead and listed who all of the characters are that you can use (with a screenshot of the select your character screen, a la MK/SF) in Wii's exclusive Duel Mode:

01 - Apprentice (Bounty Hunter Disguise)
02 - Apprentice (Corellian Flight Suit)
03 - Apprentice (Father's Robes)
04 - Apprentice (Light Training Gear)
05 - Apprentice (Training Gear)
06 - Apprentice (Raxus Prime Survival Gear)
07 - Apprentice (Sith Robes)
08 - Apprentice (Jungle Combat Gear)
09 - Apprentice (Industrial Explorer Outfit)
10 - Ultimate Good
11 - Qui-Gon Jinn
12 - Obi-Wan Kenobi (from Episode III)
13 - Anakin Skywalker (from Episode III)
14 - Darth Vader
15 - Luke Skywalker (from Episode IV)
16 - Luke Skywalker (from Episode VI)
17 - Mace Windu
18 - Ultimate Evil
19 - Shaak Ti
20 - Darth Maul *No dual-bladed lightsaber
21 - Count Dooku
22 - Asajj ventress
23 - Master Rahm Kota
24 - Aayla Secura
25 - Mara Jade
26 - Darth Phobos
27 - Maris Brood

Nice list, even though 1/3 of them seem to be the same character in different skins/outfits. The lack of Plo Koon disturbs me heavily, though.

Either way, sucks this got pushed back.
I can play as Mara Jade in dual mode? You mean I can satisfy my twin obsessions with the EU and redheads all with one video game? Great news!
I'm starting to wonder if this thing is ever coming out.

From Kotaku:

In the wake of the retirement [forced removal] of Lucasart president Jim Ward, the gestation of several projects have come into question. Apparently Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, is atop that list. Quietly, many of the programmers and artists have become dissatisfied with the project's direction. Most noticeably, the rapidly approaching release date has not been moved even though there's no workable engine actually in place. Apparently, the physics engine powering the game excels at Force Users moving single objects out of planetary orbits into the active game space, but is subject to fits and starts when dealing with myriad smaller items.

Wow. We'll just have to see what happens.
In a somewhat related note, we bought my son the Rogue Shadow Lego ship that is from the game, and not only was it really difficult to put together (a bit more so than other Lego sets of the same ilk), but it was missing a bag when my wife initially bought it (there was no bag 4 and two bag 7s). She returned it, and in the new set, we were still missing a few random pieces. Luckily we were at Disney World where a Lego store is, so she took one of the pieces that we needed more of there, and they just gave us a couple of extras. The guy also said that she was the third person that day that had said they had issues with the Rogue Shadow set.

Has it been confirmed that there will be no PC version?
No word yet! There were some April Fools rumors that stated it was coming out for PCs, but there's been no official announcement of any kind.

Going to be playing this tomorrow! Anyone got any nagging questions (ahem, Overlord, ahem) they need answered? Will get an article up on it as soon as I'm allowed...

Yes.

Have they made the force powers ludicrously strong? Are lightsabers obsolete? Is the story more like Kotor, or The Phantom Menace?
What's with this "different" versions for different systems bullshit? I don't care how goddamn great your game is, iIf I own multiple systems, I'm not buying two fucking copies! Look, GTA IV can kinda get away with it by offering DLC AT A LATER DATE, but if both versions (PS3 and 360) were released and you get this island on the 360 and on the PS3 and different island with completely different shit to do, that sucks.

Sorry, there's a question in there somewhere. Also, can I lop off limbs with the lightsaber or is it just a pussy melee weapon that take x number of hits to kill a guy with? The cheat to let you do that in Jedi Knight 2 (Dark Forces 3? I'm not going to look it up. The third FPS on PC) made the game.

Yes, I am a bit bitter with the Star Wars games.
Please Alex, find out for me if a PC version is expected.
If the answer is no, can you kill them for me?

Thanks!

Yes.

No, but it does seem a ton of a lot more fun (and useful) to use force powers. Although there are a few that work together, like using lightning to enhance the saber.

Didn't see enough to get an opinion on it really...

Xbox 360 and PS3 will be exactly the same. Wii, PS2 and PSP versions will be different (and each have various exclusives), and the DS different from all of those.

Melee weapon.

No comment yet!

Article coming soon- I'm going to grab some lunch and get cracking on it- hopefully have it up by the end of the day.

As an opportunity to wander around in the Star Wars universe fucking shit up, this sounds like a blast. But as a game, it sounds dull as dishwater. How is it fun killing helpless peons over and over? Are there any enemies at all that are capable of putting up any kind of a fight at all?

Actually, when you put it that way ....

Apparently Alex wasn't the only reviewer given early access. And, maybe, it didn't go that well. Check out this article from IGN (http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/411/293833p1.html)

Quote:
LucasArts has quietly given several reviewers an opportunity to tinker around with The Force Unleashed. While several months remain to polish the game, comments from at least one reviewer (who shall remain nameless due to nondisclosure agreements) concern us. With all the attention given to the revolutionary appearing game mechanics, was the story given short shrift?

"The game has great moments where you can use your force powers to incredible effect, and those are really awesome. Unfortunately the powers are not integrated into the story. Much of it feels like fan fiction. Hunting down a Jedi hiding on Tatooine with Obi-Wan? Battling Mace Windu's clone? It's a lot of fun to hurl Bantha and spacecraft into enemy Jawas, but much of the time you're wondering just what the heck is going on."

We have to admit. Some of that sounds awesome.
I can't wait for this game.

Did Williams himself compose the new score?

That sounds awesome, but No multiplayer in this day and age is kinda odd.
Good write-up, Alex.
Ditto the hate on the no multi-player. Definitely a selling point (or not buying point) for me. I know you were there for Force Unleashed, but any comment about KOTOR 3?
Sounds more fun to watch than it is to play.

No, it was done by a fellow named Mark Griskey, the guy who did KOTOR 2. Some of the tracks are just rearranged versions of old ones... you're going to get the Imperial March in there, for example.

Nope, I got nothing else! They were being very hush hush about a lot of things... especially since he seemed wary of me, as I was one of the few online guys there (the rest of the people he met throughout the day were print).
So you didn't get to hold the controller at all? That's too bad. This game still sounds like a lot of fun, multiplayer or no.

Did you at least ask them if we're ever going to get an honest-to-Wat lightsaber game for the Wii?

Well, you are bad ass. I'd be a little wary too.

Sucks that they are being hush hush on things; however, as they do have quite a few months before the game comes out I can see why they wouldn't want to divulge everything.
I'm not badass, trust me.

But actually in July I'll be able to reveal a few more things.

gravedigger- they're considering the Wii version (and especially the Duel mode) the lightsaber game. I agree that a real game based on that entirely is what we need, though.

Will the dual portion be multi-player (for what works as Wii online)?
