Star Wars: The Force Unleashed - Page 6

Spoilers ahead.

Finished the game last night, and I think the review's that range from 7.0 to 7.5 are spot on. That's not to say you shouldn't buy this game at some point and that you won't enjoy it especially if you dig action games or star wars, but the game's got flaws that should have been ironed out.

The auto aim function is kinda broken. Trying to select targets to use force powers on in many situations can be a huge pain in the arse. This should have been fixed and it would have made the game a whole lot more fun and brought an extra level of depth to the comber. Vaders final fight is the most frustrating encounter with this BS aim system.Plus the platforming from time to time is cheap n' frustrating and in some section's its sort of hard to discern what to do next. Again another level of polish would have done this game wonders.

And finally the story. Its something I liked and at times it felt like the best stuff to come out of star wars in a while, but it still felt unpolished. From the way the cutscenes kick in and out to the actual gameplay, which is sort of jarring, to the fact that when the characters say dialogue in game, the character model's mouths don't move, there's always something in there that took me out of the story.
I mean, there's this boss you fight at the end of the junk yard level. He's this jedi that's gone crazy with guilt and built his own junkyard jedi council. The visual design of this jedi master is great (the gameplay to beat him, not so much) but while I was fighting him, I was wondering what the hell those Statues around us were (the junk jedi council statues). I had to go into the briefing files menu and read the jedi's bio to find out. Which is crap. How much better would the fight have been if I actually understood what those surroundings meant via a cutscene of some sort before the fight had occured? It would have been more engaging.. The game keeps dropping the ball like that when it comes to telling the story.

Things I liked:
The combat. A ton of fun for the most part. Some boss battles suck ass. Using only lightning to finish a boss is crap.
The upgrade system.
The graphics.
The apprentice character and the blind jedi.

There's my all over the place thoughts on the game.

No. I refuse to let you put me into a mental headlock!

I rate how successful a game is by how fast I look for cheats online. The faster I look, the more frustrated I am with the game. It took less than 20 minutes. It's not a bad game, but... I should have waited for it to get cheaper. Hey, it's after the hurricane, the stores just opened, and my impulse buying gland was pumping all that shit in my system.

If you haven't bought it yet, rent. I'm liking the story a lot (and nowhere near halfway through yet) but so far, the game plays like a STAR WARS version of Golden Axe.
So, it's beaten.

When this thing hits $30, it's a must buy. It's a fairly basic hack-n-slash at the end of the day, and there's still some glitchiness that just shouldn't happen in a game in this day and age, but for all the little things the game screwed up, there's at least three the game does right, most of them having to do with the Force Powers and the story.

Actually, I'm comfortable saying in terms of story, writing, and acting, this mops the floor with the prequels. And I LIKE the prequels.

Also, Sam Witwer does a pretty damn great McDarmid impression.

No, it doesn't. The story's too simple (Vader manipulates apprentice, now big fight!) and the script's kind of crap if you're judging it on that level. The scene where Vader stabs the apprentice in front of the Emperor is completely awful, while pivotal to the game.
just picked this up today

got through the first apprentice level. enjoying it. i agree the length of the level is abit too long.

but all in all, i'm lovin the mass destruction
post #257 of 325
As a child when I imagined what it would be like to fight Darth Vader, I always figured it would be like a series of minigames.

7/10

Extra costumes? It was hard enough to play through the game once. I couldnt imagine going through again just to look like Luke. I guess this will convince that one die hard Star Wars fan who hasnt played it yet to finnaly pick it up.

As long as the price is right, cool beans to all of this.

Also, hate to disagree, Alex, but despite a few neat weapons, Fracture did jack shit for me.

Fracture demo fucking sucked. Have no idea what Alex was seeing that evaded me. All of the "earth moving" looked gimmicky and carefully scripted, and while there were space marines, they weren't marine-y enough for me. Additionally, the world had too much of a color pallette, and things didn't look suitably ruined/moldy/craggy/rusty.
Thank god I'm not in minority with thinking that Fracture blew.
Trust me, the game is much better than TFU. The terrain deformation is a gimmick, sure, but it makes you really consider different ways of getting around the world. The tutorial level holds you by the hand and doesn't show what the rest of the game is like.

As for the TFU prices, that shit really should be free, but we'll see what they charge.

This is not much of a selling point. At least for me.

Well, it feels scripted. As in: this is how you get around, do it that way, or it won't work. Which is fine if the game world's constraints feels organic, but I can move gigantic slabs of earth! But only in certain spots! And only to certain heights!

Have you played the rest of the game? It's possible, I suppose, that the demo doesn't reflect the game. This happened with Rainbow Six Vegas. I thought the demo absoutely sucked, so I avoided the game for months. Turns out the designers simply chose an awful level for their demo.

Stil, from what I've seen, there's nothing compelling about Fracture.
Yeah, I've beaten the game. The demo's the tutorial level. I was a little annoyed at first too, especially with the little icons that pop up showing where you should use this grenade or where you should dig, but it's gone after that level. Much less hand-holding, much more freedom to do what you want. There's a ton of nifty weapons and power-ups you get, too.
I don't put much stock in most game demos in general. I still haven't tried Fracture yet, but I'll get to downloading the demo eventually. Anyway, most of the time demos are just all out of context and all out of wack as a result. For example, based on the demos alone I never would have played Heavenly Sword or Uncharted on the PS3. They did absolutely nothing for me but I went on to give the full games a try and both of them clicked for me and I had a blast with both, and still do (especially so with Uncharted).

TFU demo kind of bores me too, but I have fun with the destructive capabilities of the character and wouldn't mind checking out the full game, either as a rental or when the price drops.
Hey, how long did it take you guys to bring down the Star Destroyer? I'm helping my son with it, and we keep killing the TIEs, then start to pull the SD down, then have to stop because of more TIEs, etc. We can never get it finished because we end up dying after pulling on it for the 3rd or 4th time. It does look like it's getting closer to the screen. Is that the pattern? Beat TIEs, pull the SD until the next set of TIEs, repeat?
Correct. The big secret is that every once in a while, you need to ignore the icons at the bottom, and get the tip of the SD so that it's facing towards the center of the screen. Fool around with the ship in that area, you'll get the cue to start bringing it down in earnest. That's where the real progress will come.

Also, don't make the same mistake I did and assume the exploding pods are the only way to take down the TIEs. Force Lightning is your best friend in the world there.
I knew the key was to turn it until the area around the icons was green. Haven't tried force lightning, but I am able to force grab the TIEs and throw them at one another. Usually the last one is the hardest to grab, so I usually destroy that one using one of the pods. Thanks for the advice.
And, see, I've never been able to Force Grab the TIE fighters. The little blue box just comes and goes way too quick for me.

But, yeah, either way, Force Lightning makes quick work of most of them.
Thanks for the advice (again). Force lightning definitely did the trick. Finished it yesterday. That SD was still a pain in the ass. It started getting to the point that I'd get the thing in the green, but it wouldn't "set" to let me start pulling down the ship. I finally got that worked out, and my son played a bit further. Then I picked it up at the point where you have to align the rings, and just finished it. The Emperor was a bitch, especially since I couldn't see my guy half the time. How do you unlock the "Sith" ending? Do you go back and destroy Vader, or do you have to finish it on the Sith difficulty level or something? There was one cinematic not unlocked at the end, and I'm assuming it's the alternate ending.

You have to go after Vader instead of the Emperor. The Sith ending is a bit goofy.
When Palpatine's using Force Lightning on the blind Jedi, you have the option there to either run over and fight him, or jump over the railing to your right to finish Vader with a QTE.

And yeah, I concur the Sith ending ain't that great.

I already got rid of my copy, but for anyone looking for more with the game-

LucasArts today announced that it has released a new single-player level for Star Wars: The Force Unleashed. When the game hits that magic $30 price tag, I'll be all over this. Not a minute before.
It's at $44 used right now. I expect that number to drop around $10 as the used supply increases in January.
Midway just won its lawsuit over the Psi-Ops IP, so I'm hoping that puppy is backwards compatible in the near future. Isn't The Force Unleashed basically a whitewashed clone?
More like Psi-Ops with lightsabers instead of half-assed gunplay.
Really? C-3PO is a skin you can play as? How did that ever make the cut? Id think they would wanna put in Han Solo or something first. I mean both would be ridiculous to watch in the context of the apprentice's agility and lightsaber but at least Solo could bend his knees.
Ultimate Sith Edition announced, which has another Hoth level like you were all hoping- http://chud.com/articles/articles/20...OTH/Page1.html
post #281 of 325
Playing with the C3PO skin is actually pretty funny.

And yeah, I'll be downloading the Tatooine level. Don't know if I'll break down and buy the new version, though.
OK, much as I hated the "evil" ending, the Vaderized Apprentice does look pretty badass.
Good thing I put SW:TFU into my back log list, now I can buy this version and get it all in one swoop.

The demo was fun, but it wasn't Jedi Outcast
post #284 of 325
If they're smart they'll release it as a greatest/platinum hit price point, but I doubt it. 30 bucks is exactly how much this game should cost.
So the Sith Edition I guess is already out? While you can download the Tatooine mission pack, the only way you can play Hoth is if you re-buy the game...which really really blows... Anyone play this yet? Of course I'm not going to download the Tatooine mission and not play Hoth, so I might be stuck buying this game again...damn it
post #286 of 325
Anyone know if you can pick back up from your saved games from the original if you get the Sith edition?

Also, even though I have the PS3 version and not the Wii, this is pretty freakin' cool.
ok, thats fucking awesome. I would guess that the saves would still work given that it's the "same" game..with just some extra content added to it.
I can't fathom a world in which someone would want to buy this game twice.
It's so weird. The substances that were the most fun to mess with in the game (Wood/glass) are the ones least frequently encountered. What a disappointment

Oh I live in that world! but I'm just going to get the Tatooine DLC and that's it.. Sooner or later the Hoth version will be down-loadable as well.

Jacob Singer: Did your trusty pack mule die on you before you made it to town to mail this off to me?

In all seriousness, I'm just trying to gauge when to expect it, no big rush. Thanks!
The only draw in hindsight that this game has is the story. Once you've done that, why the fuck would you ever come back? The gameplay was about as bland as it comes after the first hour or so.
I dont regret owning the game, but I know I would if I paid more than $25 for it.

My 8 year old son is all about Star Wars (as evidenced by the purchase of the Clone Wars: Republic Heroes game that he just bought and BEAT in like 2 days.), so he plays the game over and over again.
