Star Wars: The Force Unleashed - Page 2

Thats cool that you play the first level as Vader but it will only make me wish you did for the whole game.
When the fuck is LucasArts going to look back at their early output and think..."Hey, those space-combat games made major-mint...maybe; (and I know this could be a radical idea guys),...maybe we should upgrade them for modern consoles and PCs..."

I LOVE the light-sabre shit...but I also love the 'X-wing/TIE Fighter' shit.
I can't believe we haven't had anything from this franchise in over 10 years in this regard.

Can I buy you a beer? My thoughts exactly.

Hell, didn't even the super-arcady Rogue Squadron series sell well?
I was a big fan of Rogue Squadron for the 64. I sold my 64 to help fund my first DVD player. Looking back, it was a dumb idea. If I remember right, Rogue Squadron had a code so you could fly a Naboo Starfighter before TPM was even released.

Someone sent me this link of people talking about the article... cracked me up- http://forums.g4tv.com/thread.jspa?t...32551&tstart=0

Force Unleashed: Lucasarts is blowing it

"There are two meters at the top of the screen, one for health and one for force powers, that you'll fill back up by collecting orbs of the same color that enemies leave behind. "

Orbs? wtf lucasarts

so apparently this jedi game is going to take its cue from Omnimusha May Cry.
Quote:
ORBS! WTF, man that is so lazy of them.

don't you see the obvious problem? there you are, some badass sith jedi and you decide to grab a wookie, lift him in the air, spin him around a bit for laughs and a few "RARGHGHGHG!"s and then you chuck him 50 yards out and through a tree..... oh crap, now i have to go grab the orb. So now your scrambling for the power up like some desheveled stripper on meth who had to jump off the stage for a crumbled up stray 1 dollar bill.

blowin it
hahahaha. And for the record, the orbs float to you, GoW-style.
Huh. Usually, they wait till the pirate copies leak to start blindly tearing Lucasarts a new one like a bunch of wolverines with Downs Syndrome.

This is what happens when people go to cheap stripclubs.

There have been several recent (within the last ten years anyway) Star Wars games along those lines actually. Including Rogue Squadron 2 and 3, and Starfighter and it's sequel Jedi Starfighter, which were much better than the Rogue Squadron series IMO.

Battlefront 2 also features space combat.

And as far as their early output goes, this series is what really put them on the map:

Dark Forces is considered "early LucasArts" now? Lord, I'm old.

Now if you excuse me, I'm off to play Zak McKraken and the Alien Mindbenders.

I suppose it's a little off to call it early, but Dark Forces came out just around the same time the X-Wing and Tie Fighter series kicked off.
How many years is considered 'around the same time'?

X-Wing came out in '93.

Dark Forces in '95. (but I would argue that THIS isn't the game that launched LucasArt's Star Wars games. As far as DF goes it was a Doom clone set in 'the galaxy far, far away...' It wasn't until DF II: Jedi Knight came out that FPS Star Wars reigned supreme and that was for ONE reason, and ONE reason only...Lightsabers...

Date of release 1997.

Tie Fighter came out in December 1994, Dark Forces came out less than a year later. Not all that much time passed between those releases. Also calling it a "Doom Clone" is quite a bit off.

This ability was lacking in earlier FPS engines including Doom.
Also you are greatly underestimating how popular Dark Forces was, it was the 11th best selling computer game from it's release until 1999.

Not really, it had the advantage of a recognisable franchise and John William's music...the engine was slightly better than DOOM's, but the FPS gameplay mechanics were the same (one great thing in DF was you could look up and down)...and there WERE NO SABRES which is where II made headway and opened up the series.

No, I'm not. I NEVER said DF wasn't popular...just that DF wasn't the original BREAKOUT Star Wars game you're making it out to be.

X-Wing beat it by almost 4 years.

I am looking forward to the new Star Wars game after playing as The Apprentice in Soul Calibur IV.
Dark Forces was amusing back in the day.

I'm kinda tired out on the whole franchise though. Echoing the Tie Fighter love here. Was only talking about it last night when someone claimed KOTOR was the best SW game out there. I disagreed.
One of the best moments during the playtime was in a corridor with windows lined on one side, facing out into space. Trying to force throw a metal crate at a row of stormtroopers who were futilely trying to shoot me, I completely overshot.... instead smashing out the window behind them, which proceeded to suck all the hapless soldiers straight out into the void. After a mini whirlwind of objects and debris flew around for a second or two a metal security gate slammed shut, sealing off the window, but that was it for me. I was sold.

The actual scene probably isn't as funny as my mind is making it out to be, but this had rolling.
So it's Psi Ops physics and engine in the SW universe?
In their defence, the engine's excellent - but the ragdoll physics and "reactions" are a bit too surreal to be considered realistic. Still, it's a good example of what to expect in the many future examples of Star Wars games.
Really looking forward to this one after the latest feature here on Chud, although I still shudder at what the "super awesome twist" will end up being.
Also, Id like to confess that "X-wing vs Tie Fighter" made me broke a flightstick in anger...havent played any SW sims since then.

My guess? The apprentice is a clone of the emperor. I have not insider knowledge of the game, it's just a guess.
Demo's out! And downloading slowly!
This game is fucking awesome. They just earned my money on release day.
That AT-ST. What a wuss.

I love just the little things about it. Like how the metal doors bend realistically depending on where you hit it, or how you can bend out the metal beams to knock incoming tie fighters out of the air.
wait, is this game coming out on the PC?

never mind..its not...damn it
Downloading it for the PS3 when I get home today. Can't wait. My son (who loves Star Wars) is excited for it as well.
Thanks for the reminder, I'd totally forgotten. Gonna log on now.

Same here, Alex...also, I have to ask if Im not the only one who used the force to throw that R2 unit through a window or against another droid in their first 30 seconds of gameplay...and felt no guilt whatsoever about it.
Count me in for the "buying it on release date" wagon as well.
Eh, demo locked up on me once fairly early in, but liking it a lot so far. Shame you can't reverse the up/down on the force grip without reversing the Y-axis of the camera as well. That needs to be two separate settings.
Definitely like it. Can't wait for the full game.
So, is this download for the 360 only, or something? I got home this afternoon, excited to download the demo, and the PSN store doesn't seem to have it available anywhere.
Doesn't the PSN update differently than the marketplace? Like on different days?
I'm massively underwhelmed by the demo, the only bit that was cool was ripping the catwalk frame and bending it outwards to clip a Tie Fighter.
Really? Wow, I was having a blast testing out all of the different physics and ways to kill people.
I don't know, it just felt like a less visceral Psi-Ops to me. It doesn't help that I have no love for the Star Wars licence.

It certainly seems more arcade-y (man, I've used that word twice today) than Psi-Ops did. I imagine it'll be more intense starting out with limited powers and developing them as you go.

It's up now. I just got on my PS3 and I'm downloading it.
Whilst I have no interest in this game whatsoever, this generation's shown that demos are not the way to find out if a game's worth playing.

Several excellent games (I'm looking at you particularly, Uncharted) have had terrible demos.
Interesting- I loathed the Uncharted demo, so much so that I ignored the game when it was released. What makes the game any better?

Yeah, my 360 died last night so I was looking forward to downloading this today on my PS3 but couldn't find it. hopefully it will appear tonight when I get home.

The demo's got bizarrely unresponsive controls and puts you into one of the dullest areas in the game. When it gets going properly Uncharted is fucking awesome.
This demo is awesome. I am unbelievably psyched for the full thing. I'm amazed at how interactive you can be with the environment. For example, favorite thing to do so far: straighten out bulkheads and clothesline TIE Fighters with it.
Seriously, it's awesome to grab a guy and drag him near his buddies. Then he grabs on them while yelling and then taking both of them kicking and screaming into a flying TIE.

Fun.
Sad to say im not as enthusiastic as everyone else. Sure there is some neat things here and there, but i dont think its enough to carry the game.
That's my concern as well. Some of the later levels have some fun stuff, though... and the demo doesn't have some of the little sidequests implemented in the game that seem to encourage destruction (there's one where you have to destroy all of the tie fighters in the first hanger, for example).

Should be getting a review copy next week so as soon as I can I'll let you guys know how it holds up.

Nah he's not.

The big twist is probably either about *not really spoilers because it's so vague* Vader's true intent for the apprentice or the truth about the origin of the Rebellion.

They released the graphic novel already.
This demo made my balls ache in a totally good way. Great fucking times. Making your lightsabre charge up with force lightning and striking a Trooper never gets old. I wish the demo had included a duel with another jedi just to see how saber on saber combat feels, but for now destroying tie fighters is pretty fine by me.

Btw did anyone notice how closely the apprentice resembles that dude that played the army gay that gets stabbed in the gut in "The mist"?

Turns out he's the voice actor for the role in the game as well.

EDIT:
Check out penny arcade. Gold!

The demo makes it seem like a Tomb Raider clone with a terrible combat system. It's actually a beautifully well-made Indiana Jones game with a surprisingly responsive combat system (sure the enemies can take a few hits - but there's a cheat unlocking one-hit kills a-la Goldeneye) speaking of which - seemingly endless amounts of awards/unlockables/achievements or whatnot.

Incredible cutscenes, a passable storyline - excellent physics, fairly unique levels as opposed to excessive repetition (F.E.A.R) and a fantastic arsenal.

Seriously, I hated the demo too - I found the combat to be the most offensive bit though, perhaps you didn't see any potential. Then it really might not be your kind of game.

Personally, it's the finest single-player experience to be had on the format. Satisfying, fun and tongue-in-cheek all the way.

Sorry bout the derail - but that's one example of a demo gone horribly wrong.
