The Canary Islands are temperate. The coast of Southern California is temperate. BC is just not quite as insanely cold as the rest of Canada.

Yeah, talk to us when it's winter.

The horrible heat and humidity that is central Texas weather, perhaps?

Don't the flip-flops get sucked off by the red clay?

Anyway, come to SoCal, where it's currently 17 C (63 F), and sunny. Of course, I'm freezing my derriere off...

81 today. My desktop weather widget says it's only 76 now at 5pm. Should be perfection when I leave in an hour.

Freezing in 17 C? What are you, the Human She-Torch?

No kidding. Jeez, when it went as high as -13 C today I was feeling decadent from the warmth. Anything over 0 C is shorts weather.

Everyone knows commies use Celsius. Chemists use Kelvin.

Exactly. We Canadians are proud of our comm...uhm...socialist tendencies.

Ah, this is giving me fond memories of growing up in Calgary, walking to school in below-zero temperatures, passing snow mounds that were taller than I was, being unable to look out my bedroom window because a snow drift had worked its way up the side of the house. Good times.

After all that, living in Seattle is hilarious. Every time half an inch of snow comes down, the city flies into a group panic and everything shuts down. The schools close, pizza places stop delivering...it's insane. People throw chains on their tires and then leave them on all day in case they hit an ice patch. A couple of years ago, people actually stopped their cars on the 520 bridge and walked away.

I'm not sure how people here think that Canada and the midwest survive the winter.
We just got dumped on yesterday. I come out of work to my car covered in a blanket of ice. Took me awhile to get the windows clear. I was slipping and sliding all the way home, I saw some douche almost lose it and then he decides to speed up and barrel down the road. I can only hope he crashed into a telephone pole and burned alive. Then the snow just kept coming. We got about 3-4 inches. And they're saying it's supposed to be +2 today, +1 Sunday, +3 Monday and then +12 on Tuesday and then +3 on Wednesday. How does that make sense?

SNOW!

You should see the size of the snowflakes coming down right now - God, I love snow, I'm so happy, I've been waiting all winter for this.
And it quickly turns to a rainy/slushy mess. Damn you urban haze! Making all that shit warmer than it actuall is!
Goddamn it, it stopped already. And it didn't even stick - I just looked out the window, and the sidewalks are clear. Cocksuckers!

No, they keep drifting around while frozen. When they come into contact with something, they tear rather than popping. Sometimes, half of a frozen bubble will continue to float after being damaged.

Slushy mess outside today. No frozen bubbles for me. It's February, which means we are officially in the "This is Never Going to End, Is It?" phase of winter in Wisconsin.

Pics, or they didn't keep floating around while torn in half.

I live in central Texas and for the past couple days it has been in the 80's.

What's Winter?
Yay! More of this shit to shovel. I took a pic yesterday. We eventually got a foot. Today, I look outside and it's snowing again.

That's what it looks like out my window right now! Or, rather, it would, if I could *see* out of my windows right now -

That's the dining room. We're on the 1st floor.

I just read on the Weather Channel website that we could get 6 foot drifts. But where's my thundersnow? I was promised thundersnow!

I love thundersnow! We don't get it often in Calgary but we used to get it once a year in Kimberly.
Thundersnow? What is this Thundersnow you speak of? Tell me more!

Today? Fucking 57 degrees in NYC. In February. I wore my second lightest jacket to work today and roasted my ass off. I want my SNOW.
Thundersnow: like a thunderstorm, but with snow instead of rain.

You need to move to the midwest, Lisa. We got your snow right here. Oh, and your two bedroom apartments for less than a grand a month.

Cold enough at ground level for snow to fall, warm enough at high altitudes to get thunder.

I'm putting my request in now. I'll be up in Teterboro, NJ on Sunday through next Friday. Temps need to be high in the 70s, lows in the 60s. Thank you in advance.

NOOOO!!!! Damn you! Damn you to hell for your warm weather wishes!
Is it too much to ask for similar weather? I wouldn't want to be too shocked from my short-wearing Florida sensibilities.

Snow=bad. Cold=bad.
Buy a coat, you pussy!

I have a sensible wind breaker. Things I don't have: thick winter coat, earmuffs, gloves, winter shoes. I was looking at the weather outlook. High for next week? 42F. Low? 16F
post #81 of 180
Lisa! Look! I can see blue sky out my office window! I'm so confused, I think I should run and hide and pray to Odin.
Well, Odin does look quite a bit like Santa, which we can associate with snow. Honestly though, with these freaked out climate changes, I'm surprised you haven't looked out your window and seen a brontosaurus wandering by.

HBarr, you'd better start shopping for your trip! A windbreaker won't cut it - the weather's supposed to go completely psycho by Sunday and drop below average temperatures.

EDIT: Just checked Weather.com, and we're indeed expecting snow and temps in the 30s.

Oh Joy

Quote:
Winter storm watch for: City of Calgary
Issued at 4:22 AM MST THURSDAY 7 FEBRUARY 2008
STRONG WINDS AND BLOWING SNOW WILL HERALD THE RETURN OF ARCTIC AIR FRIDAY. THE POTENTIAL FOR SEVERE WINTER WEATHER EXISTS OVER THESE REGIONS.
A LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM IS FORECAST TO DEVELOP OVER WESTERN ALBERTA EARLY FRIDAY MORNING AND MOVE RAPIDLY SOUTHEASTWARD. GUSTY NORTHERLY WINDS WILL COMBINE WITH FRESH SNOW TO PRODUCE WIDESPREAD REDUCED VISIBILITIES IN BLOWING SNOW AS THIS SYSTEM PASSES. NORTHERLY WINDS WILL PERSIST AND COMBINE WITH FALLING TEMPERATURES TO GENERATE WIND CHILLS APPROACHING THE MINUS 40 MARK, ESPECIALLY OVER EASTERN SECTIONS. THE BITTERLY COLD CONDITIONS WILL PERSIST INTO THE WEEKEND.
So much for that bullshit being over with

Lisa, on behalf of the good people of New York City, I want to ask you to reconsider your pleas for snow. This is what my street looks like right now -

And here's a Mini Cooper -

I'm 5'3". Look at the snowbank behind me. Oh, bonus points for irony: the hardware store is selling garden equipment.

On the upside, we do get to engage in the rich tradition of winter bonding with our neighbors...

In conclusion - have you lost your mind, woman?!

Don't forget the travelers to NYC/NJ!!
Oh, no. Not you. I want a small, highly localized snowstorm to follow you around. Babies who whine about a 42 degree forecast need some toughening up.

**GASP**

Love? Not found. Empathy for someone who has never lived further North than Houston, Texas (and mind you, I was born in Hawaii)? None. Barr =
post #89 of 180
This is tough love. We're all very worried about you. Now go pack extra socks.

I hope you freeze your bloody knickers off!

Sorry, I always wish my woes and misfortunes on everyone else. It's nothing personal, just spreading the misery.

No! Do you know the last really great snowstorm we had? Two years ago, snow up to my knees (and I'm 5'3", just like you). Ironically enough, it came on the day after I moved back home to NY from my quick little six months in California. The mover who drove everything I own cross country got the last of my furniture and stuff into the apartment before heading back west for a pickup I think in Colorado just as the storm was heading into NYC. My best friend and I saw him back out to his humungous moving truck just as the first few snowflakes started to fall - next morning, we were knee deep in the stuff. Now that's a snowstorm - and weirdly enough, I want one!
God damn global warming. We used to have seasons down here, now it's crazy as hell. It was in the 70's Monday. That shit is just plain wrong. We haven't had a good snow in years. At this rate it's gonna be another triple digit summer. Bring back our winters.

Cold. Although considering where I am, I should say wicked cold.
Heeeey, HBarr, how's that "windbreaker" of yours working out for you? Did it keep you toasty warm when you woke up to 15 degrees outside?

(Seriously - just suck it up and go shopping for something warm before you do anything today.)
I actually have a good leather bomber jacket that I'm using (plus I'm not outside very long - cig breaks tend to be VERY fast here). I do wish I had picked up something for my head though (since I keep it shaved).
When I was in middle school I remember my cousin talking on the phone to one of her friends saying she was going skiing that night. I found it odd seeing as though we lived in Miami Beach.

One day I was just sitting around watching TV and I said out loud "Ah, she meant cocaine! I get it."

And that's my Florida snow story.
Like MissZooey, I'm hanging out in Wisconsin and although I'm in Madison and we avoided the worst of the snow storm that hit Milwaukee, I'm still plenty sick of this permanent snow and cold.

The worst part is when it starts getting to -10 and no one even says anything. Negative temperatures become expected. I can only hope after this extremely snowy winter that we'll be rewarded with a nicer spring. I'm just sick of looking out of my window and seeing snow.

Plus, I can't drive anywhere since my car sucks something awful in the snow (although it was great for handling the weather in DC, where it's acceptable to not go into work because it snowed 2-3 inches). Maybe this summer I'll finally get that Subaru WRX I've been dreaming about and actually be able to leave my house in the winter.
Zooey, did it actually drop to 40 below where you are? That's what I heard on some news blurb today.
I'm with Lisa. This week was the third fucking time we were warned about a HUGE snowstorm that would give us upwards of 10" of snow.

Yesterday? About half an inch and bullshit rain all day. RAIN!

It's the middle of February and Old Man Winter is still hiding. In Calgary, it appears.
Well, they were proud to announce earlier this week that we have gotten a record amount of winter snow here in Madison. I'm glad I moved out here for this.
