Hot Rod (2007)

The other thread for this disappeared.

Anyway, not a bad movie. My friend once compared Andy Samberg to Adam Sandler, and despite the same initials, I didn't see the resemblence. But this movie has Billy Madison written all over it. It's a very clear and simple plot about trying to impress one's father (in this case, step-father) it's got the weirder gags, it's got the obvious physical humor, SNL cast members, and there's even a musical number at the beginning of the third act.

The best thing about this movie is the editing. The editing is very smart and scenes are cut at just the right moment, which sometimes turns lame jokes into decent jokes (the malfunctioning fireworks at the beginning of the movie). Also, a lot of the humor is very familiar (especially the tired obsession with 80's cheese) but it often goes in less obvious directions than you'd expect.

Not a bad film, all in all. Not great, but it's entertaining enough to see once.

Cool beans.

Definitely my favorite moment.

Thank god you didn't bring up Napoleon Dynamite at any time in your post. I don't see those comparisons at all. I've never been a fan of Billy Madison, but those comparisons are at least apt.

I went into this movie expecting absolutely jack shit, and came out a fan. I adore it. Probably a lot more than I should.

Another in a short list of movies in which the filmmakers who are depicting LSD use seem to have actually used LSD. If that mean anything.

I fucking LOVE this movie. It's so much funnier than it has any right to be and I can watch it over and over and over. And over. Danny McBride is fantastic in ever scene he has.

"This is my hat now. This is totally my hat!" I fucking LOVE it.

My first reaction was Napoleon Dynamite. It's the hair, the editing, the offbeat humor, and the 80's obsession. In the end, they're very different films, but my first reaction was "wow, very Napoleon Dynamite". It's not a good comparison, but I understand it.

EDIT:
By the way, here's the Cool Beans scene we were referencing.

"I was going to ask you, who you think would win in a fight between a grilled cheese sandwich, and a taco?"

"Is that what really what you were going to ask?"

"Yes."

"Um, Grilled cheese. But only in a fair fight. If it's prison rules, I'd take the taco."

"Wow. That's pretty racist, but correct."

That cool beans sequence caused more than a few walkouts when I saw this. Stupid bastards.

Bought this one after loving the rental and I have to say that this line made me laugh even harder the 2nd time:

"I'm freakin pumped! I've been drinking green tea all gawd-damn day!"

I like how they don't even bother trying to come up with a reason why Hot Girl should hang around them. "You want to be a team member." "Yes, I would like that."
Another great showing by Hader. Love his face during the final stunt.
Good little movie. Love Chris Parnell's thing with the Calvin tattoo pissing in two directions at once.
If anyone has an MP3 of the Cool Beans bit, I'll give them the "Wolf Man" directing gig.
I introduced this one to my group of friends in December and we haven't stopped quoting it since.

You guys are all collectively going to be the next Douglas Bubbletrousers.
This probably proves that I'm a retard, but I'm renting this today based on that Cool Beans youtube clip alone.
Obligatory you liked HOT ROD but not ANIMAL HOUSE comment.

I've said it before, but Accepted is funnier than Animal House.
Yeah, more iMacs. Also, a college named S.H.I.T. Also, Lewis Black tells someone with a PhD to stick it up their A-S-S. Oh, he also says fuck.

It's totally better than ANIMAL HOUSE.

Jake & Scott, come back when your names are something I can remember like, "harrybeanbag" and "FreeRobotSex"... This is MADNESS!

All these name changes recently!

Hey, at least I have the same avatar to avoid all the confusion.

As my user title suggests, I liked this movie. Actually my favorite comedy of last year, and it's awesomely rewatchable.

Also, this was mentioned in the lost thread, but:

"Pools are perfect for holding water."

Awesome.
Seen it a few times now (brilliant party movie) and there's always some gag that I forgot about that busts me the fuck up. Most recently, when they're about to do the bit with the pool and Andy rings that little bell. And they all start going "aaaaaaaaah" "eeeeeeeeeeeh"

Also: "Of course it's awesome. It's awesome as shit."
Most of the clips I've seen of Samberg from SNL have elicited a Benedictine monk-like silence from myself. So I was quite surprised how amusing I found HOT ROD to be.

Will Arnett may play the same character in every movie I see him in, but in this he has lots of quality lines and really shined as the smug jerk.

Laughed at pretty much everything Chris Parnell did or said.
Nice cameo by Queens of the Stone Age as well.
Also, every script should have a scene description that contains "random fisherman rubs hero down with oil"
2 Legit 2 Quit.

Also, random chinese guy dancing, gold in comedies.
Really loved it and its definitely the same sort of shape as those early, good Sandler comedies.

The endless falling down the countryside really made me laugh a lot more than it should, as did cool beans and the insta-riot. Great film, the first time a decent comedy has snuck up on me since Super Troopers.
Ian Macshane's painting of Rod with the horse was such a delight.

Gets me everytime, especially with his unnerving direct to camera grin
post #30 of 56
That guy's dancing didn't make me laugh as much as him just throwing all the fliers at people.
Oh, and i cant stop listening to "You Are The Voice" since i saw this movie.

"It all started Super Positive..."
Isla Fisher is kinda hot too.
i definitely should watch this someday, if only for the Queens of the Stone Age appearance.
I might be easily amused, but I fucking love this.

I think I might have been the one to start that other thread. What I'm wondering is how good of a watch it would be the second time around. And oh yeah, I thought the movie was hilarious.
My friend found it 'amusing' the first time around but loved it the second time.

See, I found it amusing when I watched it, but really love it the more I think about it (and the more I watch "Cool Beans"). Fuck it, I'm buying it - my girlfriend's ill and wants something funny to watch tonight. This will do.

That's a burn for United vs. Inter, sackley.

Heh.
I assume this is some kind of "soccer" reference?

Nah, sorry, not that into football, certainly not outside the Premiership and Internationals (World Cup and qualifiers etc.)
You assume correctly, sackley.

I'll take that as a sign that you're up for Saturday, Rusty? How to make this relevant? Hurm. Maybe, you should tell me Liverpool are gonna kick our asses like McShane kicked Samberg's? Then I'll vow the opposite...

Haha, yeah I can't wait. I'm really fired up for it after the Real game and I imagine the players are as well. I've managed to get a (incredibly expensive) ticket so they better put in a performance unlike the last few seasons.
Unfortunately, Man U look quite unstoppable at the mo.

I reckon Torres will turn Vidic inside out though

But, yeah...it would be "cool beans" if we beat you on Saturday
post #45 of 56
Well played, Rusty. I'm definitely not as ebullient about it as I maybe could be after Wednesday. Looking forward to it, nonetheless.

A 'pool fan, Lima? Or just winding me up? *wink*

Unfortunately for us Rusty, John O'Shea has about as much composure as Hader had on his way into the hospital. And he'll likely play. I'm pretty confident I could skin him, so I don't wanna think about what Torres would do to him!
I saw this one about a week ago. To be honest, I didn't like it much at all. I never really laughed out loud, although, I thought a few of the jokes were okay.

I did like how the radio host thought that the stunt would save AM radio.
Plus, I sort of think they missed an opportunity with the fundraising. After thinking about it afterwards, having the grand total come out to $49,999 would have been pretty great.
Allow me to proclaim my love for this.
This has remained one of my favorite comedies since it came out. All of the actors commitment to their characters really makes the movie work for me. I always feel like I oversell it to people who haven't seen it, but I can't remember anybody being let down after I suggested it.
This is another one in my near-statuesque DVD queue. I might crank it out tonight just because there's been a dire shortage of comedy in my diet as of late.
