Can't wait if they'll stick a little bit closer to the novel.
Great news. Thanks!

I'm pretty sure the specs for the double disc edition have not yet been released.

Going back to that ending...

...All they have to do is remove the cheesy compound at the very end of the movie. Just have the same narration over footage of the woman and the kid leaving Manhattan.

I needs a new second half. This is smart marketing, but I ain't biting. If I ever catch it on tv though, I will gladly watch the exceptional first 45 minutes.

Anyone have an idea of what the alternate version and ending are going to be like?

If they cut out the lady and the kid completely, I can't say I'd be disappointed.
Will they be taking out the monsters and replacing them with practical? Please?

We can dream my friend, we can dream...

Hell, I'd settle for just a little touch up to the monster effects.
I am curious about the new ending, but you literally have to fix the monsters (ie: make them practical or redesign to warrant the CGI) and completely redo the 2nd half for me to be happy.

I still haven't seen this flick. I'll have to catch it in the dollar movies, but this new alternate ending has peaked my interest.
If the ending is the one mentioned in Wikipedia, it's possibly even worse than the one in the theatrical cut. Didn't think that's possible, but that's how it reads.

SPOILERS!!!!

Visual effects supervisor Janek Sirrs recounts the original ending starting with the standoff, "At that point, Neville's—and the audience's—assumptions about the nature of these creatures are shown to be incorrect. We see that they have actually retained some of their humanity. There is a very important moment between the alpha male and Neville." David Schaub stated, "Then, when Neville finally turns the alpha female over to the alpha male, there is this little love moment between the two of them." The infected then retrieve the captured female and spare Neville's life. The original final shot follows Neville, Anna, and the boy as they cross the remnants of the George Washington Bridge in hopes of finding other survivors.

And I agree with Patrick. This thing needs a new second half.
That's a massive, massive improvement over what there was, but why would the cut that? It seems like a much happier ending. The retarded refusal to get the ending right circa the book is exactly why I'm practicing my screen writing skills by writing an I am Legend adaptation right now.
That alleged ending is consistent with the build-up of the infected throughout the movie. It's not that bad. Especailly if they do cut the "Postman" coda.

Why blow up all the bridges they did if there's still a way to get on or off the island? Just saw this thing finally, and that woman getting in and out of Manhattan didn't make sense.

Decent mood piece for about an act and change. Goes all to hell at the end. I have nothing new to say here.

Plot hole brought to you by Akiva Goldsman.

Third act and all, I'm still able to enjoy it. I still believe there could have been a middle ground in regards to practical and using mocap on the vampires.

Tunnels?

I considered getting the 2 disc DVD so I could figure out what went wrong, and so I could see the behind the scenes on what I liked, or listen to a commentary. But there's no real special features. On the 2 disc. Wrap your head around that.

It'll get a double dip (even if there is already 2 editions) for sure. Maybe they'll go back and replace all the silly CGI.

It's easy to explain- all the extra features are on the Blu-Ray disc. You know, the one they want you to upgrade to.

It's pretty scummy.

I thought one of the opening shots showed the mouth of the Lincoln Tunnel flooded. Whether it did or not, there was a significant subplot about "sealing off the city". I call bullshit.

I can be patient then. Movie didn't rock my world or anything. I would have bought it used cheap if the disc had more than the movie on it. If WB pulls that shit on THE DARK KNIGHT, I'll be pissed. Guess I'll have to spring for a PS3 sooner.

You're prob right. Just spitballin'.

No ending could improve this shitty movie! A terrifying virus that turns you into CGI and makes you able to open your mouth really wide.

Well, they are releasing a 'Ultimate Collector's Edition' with all the features that should have been on the original 2-disc DVD. I am interested in hearing the commentary and seeing the deleted scenes though, I think theres like an hour or so of those.

What in the hell is all that shit? BLADERUNNER deserves that much peripherals. I AM LEGEND? Not so much.

Without people actively managing the pump system, in a very short amount of time (I think it's supposed to just be a couple days or a week) all the subways and tunnels underneath Manhattan would flood, says the History Channel!

Hate this movie. Wastes a pretty decent, suspenseful half-hour and a good Will Smith performance. Shame on anyone who buys that box set!

In Alex's piece he says some people can't get past the fact it's not a strict adaptation of the novel . My question is doesn't that comparison have to come in to play, especially if one believes the property was shit on. (If they take away the substance, what's the point??)

(Not in the same league literature wise, but remember similar controversy regarding Schwarzenegger's RUNNING MAN)
I just saw this last week. I agree the ending was weak, but I didn't mind it so much. I haven't seen the Omega Man, but have seen Last Man on Earth. LMoE's ending was pretty faithful to the ending of Matheson's book, but didn't do it justice, I think. So I guess I'm still waiting for someone to get that translated correctly. So a new ending (i.e., the current one) for this admittedly new take on the framework of Matheson's novel wasn't as much a sacrilege to me as it may have been to some. Although the new one described in Andrew's post abve sounds intriguing, something about it doesn't feel quite right. It kind of undercuts audience sympathy for Neville, b/c it undermines his motivation for trying to cure he disease a little, in possibly several ways. I like it for the innovation factor, but that's about all (and of course, this is all said sight unseen).

And make them all look the same... don't forget that.

In the words of the Nunz...... this movie is Fuck You (capitalization correct).

What a stellar package and release for a shit movie.

I just saw the movie this weekend for the first time. I actually enjoyed it a lot right up to the moment when Neville buries his dog, then it kind of went of the rails.

I actually liked the idea that maybe the infected were starting to regain some humanity and intelligence. I am not surprised by the original ending spoiler that Andrew posted. I thought that the story was laying clues toward that resolution as I watched, but then the story abandoned it. I wished they had kept it, I don't like a completely mindless threat driven only by hunger.

I had no problem with the woman and child getting on and off the island. How hard would it be for them to find a small boat on the mainland to reach the island?
I nearly had a heart attack when I saw this in the Last Post column because I thought Matheson (or god forbid someone else) wrote a new ending to the novel or something. Crisis averted, I guess.
