"That's the story of Jesus..."

Burning Son, I agree with everything you said. I just turned 27 and it seems any time I get into a conversation about politics or drugs or religion, I end up referencing something Hicks said. One way or another, everything comes back to Hicks.
It's amazing to me that Hicks got banned from the Letterman show for that material. It just doesn't sound that outrageous to me - maybe I'm off kilter, or maybe because it was back in the early '90s, but it just doesn't come off to me as anything that should have kept him off the show.

And Hicks agreed with you. He wrote John Lahr a 16-page letter detailing how fucked up the situation was. Its pretty well-accounted in both Love all the People or American Scream if you want to know more. (Wow, I kind of went all Starship Troopers infomercial there.... "Do you want to know more?")

You can see bra strap.

I never got any new ideas from Hicks either, I was born in 1986 and I grew up with all these ideas whirling around. I think the thing that makes him so relevant today is that he says it better. He puts all the fire and indignation into it and makes it go.

When I first heard him I was totally in awe of how he could say everything I think about the world in a new and really funny way. I don't really see how anyone could not love him but whatever, I think at the very least you have to appreciate him and what he did.

I'm newly single.

Show me some strap, Wolfy.
Not if you call me Wolfy.
What if he says it in a German accent like in Amadeus?
Oh that's not fair. Everything sounds sexier (and angrier!) with a German accent.

This, pretty much. I had some friends read a few essays/editorials that I wrote a while back and one of them made a comment that I was ripping off Hicks. Having never heard of the guy, I gave him a listen (this was the first time when I was a retard and decided that I didn't like him) and realized "Oh god, it does sound like I'm ripping this guy off."

After revisiting his stuff later on and coming to enjoy it, I realized that it's good to feel a common vitriolic bond with someone. Once I get comfortable around people and let loose with my sense of humor, I keep feeling like I'm almost re-inventing the hatewheel except with new material. Like he said during the kickoff of Rant in E-Minor, "Welcome to my show of hate. Join me."

Bill Hicks has the unique honor of being the only comedian who made me laugh so hard, I puked.
Just go out and buy Arizona Bay. Wait until you hear the names Officer Coon, Officer Nigger Hater, and Officer Keep Darkie Down. If that doesn't make you laugh then you, sir, need another bone in that body of yours.
He's funny, but seeing him live must've been fucking annoying as hell.

MAN does he yell and make loud noises alot. That really must've taken away from the experience.

Edit: And I don't mean "Chris Rock yell" but "puts entire microphone in his mouth and makes noises so loud that you can hear the speakers wanting to explode".

Neither did I, and I don't really think Hicks himself thought he was being all that Uber-Insightful and intellectually groundbreaking at all...for me the rage and fury behind his act seemed to be fueled by the fact that most of what he said was more or less simple common sense but people were still dumb enough not to get on board for the big win.

Hicks has been canonized somewhat because of his death so I can kinda, maybe understand after hearing about him you might be disapointed with his work but....uh......no I can't really. I was just trying to be diplomatic.

Oh man, those are some of my favorite parts! Those are generally the Goat Boy / Suck Satan's Cock bits, which pretty much uniformly reduced me to a blubbering mess when I first heard them. The best use of this is on the "Relentless" DVD when he starts railing on wholesome lite-rock, pop shit & follows up the demon-noises by screaming "FUCK THAT! I WANT MY ROCK STARS DEAD!"

Bits worth checking out for the curious...

*Let's Hunt & Kill Billy Ray Cyrus ("Rant in E-Minor")

*War on Drugs ("Sane Man")

*Anti-Drug Commercials ("Relentless" CD)

*The Anti-Christ & John Davidson ("Sane Man")

*The Pope-Mobile ("Rant")

*Me & Saddam ("Arizona Bay")

*The Elite Republican Guard ("Relentless" CD)

*L.A. Riots ("Arizona Bay")

This is just off the top of my head. God I'm such a dork.

Not much to add besides the fact Kyle Chandler would be my choice for the biopic.
I don't know why, but his bit where Jimi Hendrix blows Debbie Gibson out of the water kills me, too.

Burning Son, don't forget the classic COPS segment on Rant in E-Minor(unless it's already been mentioned. I need coffee.).

A few years ago I would have said Paul Giamatti. He could do the voice and he's got the right kind of chubby face, but he's just a bit too old now. Around the time he played Rudy in The Negotiator he would have been perfect.

I wouldn't want them to make one. I have yet to see standup comedy done well in a movie. It's a very different talent from acting, and most actors don't seem able to pull it off believably.
Kyle Chandler?
Chandler. Maybe 10 years ago, circa Early Edition. Good actor, and if you see Hicks, there's quite a resemblance there. He'd have to put on a few pounds, but
one thing about Hicks is that despite his unique set of material, at heart Hicks was a fellow who believed in civility. It comes out much more in his interviews with Len Belzer, required listening for any Hicks fan.

I think another part of why I'm not enamoured with Bill Hicks is because I'm not an angry person, and his anger has a tendency to turn me off rather than relate to it. The marketing bit is so clever that it shines through his anger, I find it very funny. But most of his stuff, not so much.

I hadn't heard that in a while... and it's fucking funny, still.

Wow. Don't know what else to say as people have said it better than I could. Bill Hicks was/is fan-fuckin-tastic, and I respect your opinion even though I dont' agree with it. And Stanhope is great. Check out the No Refunds Dvd. Great shit.

Your "nebbishness" (and I don't mean that in a derogatory way at all) gravitates more towards Woody Allen than Bill Hicks... I can see that.

I've never heard any Doug Stanhope. I'm going to assume from all this praise that he was wasted as a replacement on The Man Show, because I wasn't impressed with him there.

He's got a special on Netflix's Watch Instantly. I may have to check it out.
Doug is filthy as hell and funny as fuck. And I hated him on the Man Show.

One other cool thing about Bill Hicks: For several years I've made donations to an animal sanctuary run in his name, http://www.billhicks.org/index.html. They actually offer pretty sharp gifts in exchange for donations.

Don't for get my favorite: Modern Bummer ("Dangerous"):

BUM: "Can you spare any money?"

HICKS: "Sorry don't have any change."

BUM: "Thanks a lot, buddy. You don't know what it's like not to have any money!"

HICKS: "Yeah I do, that's why I work..."

Or the classic:

BUM: "Hey, you got any money?"

HICKS (reaches into pocket and pulls out cash): "I sure do. It feels great! Thanks!" (puts money back in pocket and walks away).

DANGEROUS is a great CD (it's the one that Dennis Leary stole the No Cure for Cancer and John Lennon bits from). I'd recommend DANGEROUS as an introduction to or a second try to anyone who hasn't heard Hicks or didn't like his other CD's.

The creepy thing is that if you listen to his rants about Bush I and the first Gulf War, he could easily be talking about Bush II and the second Gulf War.

Bill Hick's CD's are the only comedy albums I actually own. I still remember hearing his legendary rant against that drunk female heckler. He had a beautiful message, even if it wasn't original it was the delivery that counted.

His Jay Leno interviewing Joey Laurence was fucking hysterical.

"So I hear you've been dating someone, you wanna tell us about that"
"Well, she thinks so, I don't hehehehehehe"
"WHAT HAVE I DONE WITH MY LIFE"

The Rush Limbaugh, Barbara Bush bit is the most hilariously disgusting thing I've ever heard.

FUCK. YES.

"I'm so proud of that little bit of dark poetry there. It all started when I came up with the word 'scat-muncher' and just went from there."

Also, the 'suck your own cock bit' is a wonderfully set up gag and his deconstruction of it is damn funny too.

Whole heapin' passle of Hicks quotes here.

Yeah, I really can't look at Rush Limbaugh anymore without thinking "Hey, that's the guy that ejaculates pro-life maggots!"
That's awesome, I was actually sweeping out the cooler at work the other day and starting thinking about the Limbaugh bit, particularly the part with Barbara Bush...

"She squats over him, undoes her girdle...her wrinkled, flaccid labium unfolds halfway down to her knee...like some ball-less scrotum..."

I'll chime in as a younger fellow. I'm 20, and I adore Bill Hicks. All-time favorite comedian. Incredibly intelligent and well-spoken, able to pop back and forth between intense anger and pretty subtle wit. Wonderful breadth of subject matter, and the vitriol doesn't get in the way of the humor. Not a lot of people can really pull that off.

I discovered him a few years ago, and pretty immediately picked up a few albums("Relentless," "Rant," "Arizona," and a few compilations: "LoveLaughterAndTruth," "Flying Saucer Tour," and "Philosophy"). I haven't listened in a while, but I can still pull out a lot of his jokes for good, topical humor. But I completely missed the boat, as far as relevance to the times go. I just know a bunch about the subject matter. Maybe that helped, I dunno.

And don't worry, Patrick. I'll still sleep with you.
Patrick, I've decided I'm still willing to hate-fuck you.

I've been working my way through my Hicks discography(read: all albums, bootlegs, some interview stuff), and I admit that you need to try at least 3 of his albums before you really catch the bug.

I don't know, I think it's an individual thing. I became obsessed the first time I heard someone quote him, then I looked him up and found a bunch of quote sites and youtube clips and it all went from there.

I love the movies, love 'em. "Aww, Bill, terminally ill stunt people? That's cruel!" You know what I think's cruel? Leaving your loved ones to die in a hospital room surrounded by strangers. Fuck that! Put 'em in the movies! What, you wanna let your grandmother live out her last days in a sterile hospital room, with translucent skin so thin you can see her last heartbeat work its way down her blue veins? Or do you want her to meet... Chuck Norris!
Awesome.

Worship the ground that Hicks walked on. I introduced him to an ex-gf during a long road trip and she said "this is the most disgusting thing I have ever heard." She said that the Bill Cosby CDs are the gold standard for comedy albums. I almost got out of the car...fuck, looking back, I should have.
I would never disparage Cosby's legacy. The man's a legend. That said, though, he is often the "safe" choice for people who don't like their comedy too confrontational. Cosby was one of the first standups I learned to recognize as a kid, and I still love a lot of his stuff. But as I grew older, I began to see the potential of standup comedy as a real tool for commentary. That was when I discovered Carlin.

Also should be noted that Cosby's comedy got much darker later in life. I saw him perform a couple years ago and while there was the expected material about his wife and kids, there was also graphic bits about using a giant spatula to scrape a corpse's remains off the floor of a crematorium.

Jesus....that was a Cosby sketch? It was shocking enough when I saw him perform, and he had a whole bit about how he didn't really know altogether much his daughter's wedding cost until he woke up one morning, fiddled around in the shower, and realizing his left nut was missing.
