National Lampoon's Animal House

It is incomprehensible -- literally incomprehensible -- to me that people don't find this movie funny. Discuss.
Not funny. Very lowbrow. I like my movies to be more intelligent.
Maybe it's like the Beatles or the Stones. They have influenced so many musicians, thus no longer having that "it" that belonged to them and them only. Decades later, they no longer seem fresh.

Hopefully these poor souls that don't find ANIMAL HOUSE funny at least find Bill Hicks and classic SNL skits funny.

EDIT: I would have liked to have the first response instead of shithead.

Dude, if you don't like Abbey road, or Exile on Main Street, you ain't living.

I had some stupid Career Development class my last quarter of art school, and the instructor had us watch ANIMAL HOUSE (to what purpose, I don't know.) I swear I was the only student in the class laughing. Literally every joke fell flat on those bunch of assholes. That was a sad day.

Animal House is one of the best comedies about college...ever. John Belushi, and Bruce McGill are hilarious as is Tim Matheson who is great as the leader of Delta House. John Vernon was fantastic as Dean Wormer. He displayed the right amount of menace as the opposition to the antics of his Universities most raucous fraternity. Animal House was one of the first R rated films I was allowed to see as well. So while I can understand that there are people that dislike this legendary comedy...I do not see how this can be so.

I had to watch SUPERSTAR in my Film Comedy class. I was the only one not laughing. Then I walked out.

"Mr. Blu.."

(See's Bluto has 2 pencils shoved in either of his nostrils)

"Mr. Blutarsky. Zero Point Zero."

Kent: "Excuse me sir is this the Delta house?"

(Bluto turns around and urinates on Kent and Larry's shoes."

Bluto: Sure! Come on in!

Bluto: Kroeger, your Delta Tau Kai name is....Pinto.

Larry: Why Pinto?

Bluto: *Burps* Why not?

Best. College comedy. Ever.

Belushi is gold throughout his introduction. His slurred speech, pissing on Flounder and Pinto, and then into the house with his catch of the beer bottle hurling lightning fast at his head..."Grab a brew. Don't cost nothin'."

I watch Animal House a few times a year, and certain parts never fail to get to me time after time. It's the template for all the "wild and crazy" comedies that came after, and it does it so much better than most. If you can't appreciate this movie, you are fundamentally a bad, bad person.

Ask for Babs.
Love Animal House. Belushi's "Remember when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor" inspirational speech is an all-time classic. Love the whole non-sequitur sequence where the boys score on the sorority girls. John Vernon and Mark Metcalf are a great villians. Plus, cutie pre-Marion Karen Allen doesn't hurt either.
The whole "Dawn is dead?" ruse with the sorority girl still ranks as one of the ultimate bullshit acts to get vajij in my book. Just to troll the obituary section every week in the hopes that you might get lucky...priceless.
The "They took the bar. The Whole fucking bar!" is a testament to the power that was Belushi and boozers everywhere.

I know I freaked out a little when that liquor was dropped on the ground.
"They can't do that to our pledges! Only WE can do that to our pledges!"

Typing that just doesn't do it justice.
Tom Hulce with the angel on one shoulder and the devil on the other - 'Fuck her. Fuck her brains out. Suck her tits, squeeze her butt...you know she wants it.'...

Belushi on the ladder, hopping from one window to the other, looking at the camera and smiling when he gets tits...

Belushi in the food line, stuffing his face with food...

I PITY those who don't GET this movie. PITY.
Bluto's reaction after the guy trips and falls and breaks the liquor bottles is priceless. I have to rewind that scene at least 3 times each time I watch the movie.

I feel worse for those people than I do for homeless people. At least they like Animal House.

Donald Sutherland's also hilarious as the stoner teacher, Jennings. I love it when they go to his house to get stoned.

Boon: How long you been workin' on it?
Jennings: Four and a half years.
Pinto: It must be very good.
Jennings: It's a piece of shit. Would anyone like to smoke some pot?

And yeah, Tom Hulce's angel/devil thing kills me everytime.

Belushis best for my money. I adore this film like an old friend. Bluto impersonating a zit was a fave impression of mine as an early teen.

Just a question, for those who don't find it funny: The first time you saw it, did you see it alone or as an adult? I think the fact that this is one of the seminal "Hey man let's watch this even though we're not supposed to" movies for early teens is one of the reasons it endures. Also, because it's hilarious.
My brother, who is only two years younger and originally saw this at the same time as me, roughly 1984, does not find it funny in the least. More accurately, he finds a few gags here and there amusing, but he does not understand why this is heralded as a funny, pass it down to younger siblings, watch while you get high with friends movies. It literally makes him angry at the reception it gets.

I disagree. It's great.

I don't think it's been mentioned, but the horse shooting scene never fails to get a huge laugh out of me, no matter how many times I've seen the movie. That freeze frame, the guy with the tape measure and the chainsaw, great stuff.

"Do you mind if we dance with your dates?"
I finally got around to seeing this flick a couple of years ago and I loved the shit out of it. One of my favorite comedies of all time. So it's not purely nostalgia that makes it so awesome.

I was just about to post about that and you beat me to it. My favorite part of whole movie.
Keith, how old is your younger brother? I have literally never met someone who has seen and didn't love Animal House.

I love how much the movie loves its characters. It's lowbrow, sure, but there's nary a meanspirited bone in its body.

Maybe it is partly nostalgia (although I'm not so old as to have seen it in theaters) but I'd be surprised if college kids today don't love this movie as much as I still do.
I had to re-watch it again after Patrick brought it up and it's great.

As good as Belushi is "My advice to you : Start drinking heavily", I have to say that Bruce McGill and Tim Matheson sell the movie for me.
The dead horse gets me every time.

Not to mention the equally great chugs a bottle of Jack and smashes against a car hood.

"Thanks, I needed that."

Can't you read? I said he was two years younger than me. Oh, right. He's thirty-one. In his defense, he has a friend that would trot out Animal House everytime they hung out together for like twenty years. I think it just wore him down. Or he's just stupid, I'll be sure to find out when he gets back in town in a few hours.

If you have ever been to college and don't find this film at leat mildy funny and somewhat indicative of the college experience than you have no right to speak a word on this film.

Ditto in a much more serious fashion Rules of Attraction. In fact that film may be the most realistic film of the modern day college life.
God, I'd love to see the original 3 hour rough-cut of Animal House...

One of my favorite parts of the movie.

I also just die everytime Bluto's trying to cheer up a sobbing Flounder by smashing bottles and beer cans on his head with this big, happy, "Taaa daaa!" kind of smile on his face. Just that whole expectant "Come on, that bottle I broke over my head has GOTTA make you laugh!" expression on Belushi's face is gold.

Hoover: Don't screw around, they're serious this time!
Otter: Take it easy, I'm pre-law.
Boon: I thought you were pre-med.
Otter: What's the difference?

I don't think I "got" why he falls backward from the window until my third or fourth viewing.

Not only was it one of the seminal comedies of my youth, Dad made my brother and I watch it every time it was on cable. Not that we were complaining.

So when I got to college and roomed with the same guy for three years, the words 'nope, never seen it' hit me like a ton of bricks. (And this guy ended up a frat brother as well!)

Sadly, I didn't own the movie until after college (the Double Secret Probation DVD, which is pretty good), or else that problem would have been rectified.

Which lead into one of the great movie speeches of our time:

Quote:
Otter:
Ladies and gentlemen, I'll be brief. The issue here is not whether we broke a few rules, or took a few liberties with our female party guests - we did.
[winks at Dean Wormer]
But you can't hold a whole fraternity responsible for the behavior of a few, sick twisted individuals. For if you do, then shouldn't we blame the whole fraternity system? And if the whole fraternity system is guilty, then isn't this an indictment of our educational institutions in general? I put it to you, Greg - isn't this an indictment of our entire American society? Well, you can do whatever you want to us, but we're not going to sit here and listen to you badmouth the United States of America. Gentlemen!
Also the Double Secret Probation dvd features a 'Where are they now" segment, the only good parts in which you found out Bluto getting elected to the White House (He would've gotten my vote) and D-Day hiding from the cops by claimaing he doesn't speak Englsih.

Plus this was the movie that introduced me to the phrase "Eat Me".

"Cut the Cake!"

I liked the bit with Wormer in the old folks home, but otherwise, yeah, that wasn't so hot. The interviews with the cast and filmmakers are great, especially as they talk about being children of the 60's who were enjoying the excesses of the 70's as they were making the movie. It sounds like Bruce McGill's hotel room was the place to be.

Ah, I love this film, too many freat moments.

The bit near the end when everyone is checking their watches and they're all on 2.30 or something and then you see Belushi watch and its on 7.15 makes me crease up every time.

Also, the Futurama episode with the Dean bellowing, "ROOOOOOOOOBOT HOUSE!!!" is class
post #40 of 42
Watched it when I was 21 for the first time, was shiftless and bored throughout the running time and didn't find anything particularly funny.
Did you check to make sure you'd pressed play and/or the TV was on?

I don't find Animal House funny. I'm aware that, after saying that, my opinion no longer matters to you. I'm OK with that. Humor is insanely subjective. You can explain why a joke worked for you or didn't, but you can't make someone find something funny. They either laughed or they didn't.

That said, this movie could have benefited tremendously by a better cast. Belushi's not even the fourth most featured actor. It's like if they released Knocked Upwith Jason Segal's face on the cover. There are a lot of jokes that fall flat because of weak performances. Most of them, really. I think I laughed five times throughout the whole thing. That all being said, it's well-directed and that performance of "Shout" truly is outstanding.
