Why John Landis Is In Director Jail - Page 2

Another Oscar fan here. What can I say? I'm a sucker for farce comedies, even bad ones. I also like Clue, Noises Off and What's Up, Doc? I'd worry about losing cred, but I didn't have any to start with so no big deal.

That was actually a step up for her at this point.

In terms of visibility it was, I guess. But not in terms of quality.

He's Meg Mucklebones in Ridley Scott's LEGEND and the aliens in Dante's EXPLORERS, and also the model for TOTAL RECALL's JohnnyCab. Bottin liked working with him since their experience on THE HOWLING.

Of course, of course. Point is, he's more than either a Cross lookalike or a holographic doctor. Way more.

QFT

EDIT: Wow, talk about a derail.

Jeez, I didn't mean to piss on the Picardo Parade. I think the guy is one of the scraiest things in 80s horror in the Howling. I was just cracking up at how much he looks like a David Cross character in that "piece of my mind" shot. No offense meant.

To atone, I hereby fantasy cast HIM instead of David Cross as Frank Oz in the Henson bio.

No cred lost from me. What's Up, Doc is one of my favorite comedies ever. And, for the record, I file Oscar under the "Interesting Failure" category. It was a noble attempt at an old Abbott & Costello type movie that just didn't quite make it.

Don't worry, we're still tight, Phil.

Digging this up because I recently purchased a book about Landis by Giulia D'Agnolo Vallan. I also recently saw Into the Night, and found it to be incredibly underrated. It had an excellent Goldblum performance in it and cameos out of the wazzoo.

Yeah it's cheesy and silly, and no one can say that it's a truly good movie, but for some reason, I find myself watching and enjoying it every few years.
Ornella Muti is the reason.

I like Oscar, too.

I somehow missed this Advocate, but man is it good. Landis was one of the first filmmakers I really noticed in that "I'll go see everything with his name on it" way. I saw Blues Brothers on Betamax in 81, and everytime I saw a poster with his name on it - I'd beg Dad to get the movie or take me to it. Saw Spies Like Us and Three Amigos in the theater, even...

The Landis prison stint has always confused me, since there are filmmakers who've screwed things up in a way Landis would have to try hard to do still getting high profile work. Landis - more than a lot of filmmakers we as fans would like to see make the Big Comeback - still has a lot to say. Mr. Warmth was fantastic. I'm glad the American Werewolf thing didn't work out with him - but I look forward to seeing what he does next.

Thanks for bringing this back to the top, Woodsy.

David Cross and Robert Picardo in The Story of Oz

That book is fantastic. Christopher Frayling's essay on Three Amigos alone makes it a must-read.

Count me as another Oscar fan. I like that Stallone gets to be short in it. Also, early Marisa Tomei.

There's also a fantastic interview with Cronenberg about Landis. Plus, you have an editorial Landis wrote about his admiration for Carpenter's THE THING. That book is seriously a movie nerd's wet dream.

Had it ever held that position, you mean.

It's a matter of taste. I, too, prefer The Howling. But only just.

Same here. I just prefer my werewolves to be bipedal. I'm funny that way.
And to further defend my choice: the bipedal werewolf reminds me of Wily Coyote (there's a clip of an old UB Iwerks cartoon in The Howling with a wolf and lamb that kind of drives this connection home). This association gives me the shivers. Of course AAWIL has those Nazi wolfmen. Hmmm, this may be too close to call. And it belongs in another thread. Sorry for the derail.

I rather have a lackluster, broken John Landis out of director jail than having Stephen Sommers and Paul WS Anderson get bail every single time they rape celluloid.

Yes. Yes it does.

Then everything's alright...unless you like the werewolves in "Van Helsing" or "Cursed".
