Cartoon Over-Analyzations

About a decade ago when I was in college, I started up a little page called Cartoon Over-Analyzations where people could send in overthought (and often underthought) analyses of cartoon shows and movies. Well, people liked it (Jerry Beck liked it!), and it became one of the most popular sites on campus. When I entered the timesink called graduate school, I no longer was able to update it, and it pretty much died.

Cut to today, when it's super-easy to have and update a blog! So, without further ado:

http://www.cartoonoveranalyzations.com

And don't worry, I'll start my own CHUDBlog soon.

Wonderful. I have a friend that lives the next state over so we only see eachother once a month or so. We spend most of our time overanalyzing cartoons, comics, and horror movies. Lately we can talk about Avatar: The Last Airbender as if it were as socially important as WWII. I feel dirty afterwords, but it feels good at the time.

Thanks for the link. I sent it to a few friends who do the same shit. Hearing them wax poetical about Transformers Generation 1 is something to behold.

I'm glad you guys like it. But by all means, send in your immature ramblings. Until Harold Bloom submits something, my standards remain embarrassingly low.

I got StumbleUpon'ed, so my total hit count went from 1300 to 16000+ in 36 hours. Lookout, LifeHacker, I'm totally after your reader base!

Seriously, all I really want to do is reach a steady-state, where I get enough new submissions that I don't run out, even with all of the old ones.

Well, it got picked up by a couple others, like Cartoon Brew and Neatorama, and now I'm almost at 50,000 hits in a week. The internet sure is crazy.

That view of Ratatouille as a metaphor for the Disney/Pixar relationship actually makes a lot of sense.

Congratulations.

That analysis of Ratatouille as a metaphor for the Disney/Pixar relationship was pretty great.

Dude, your analysis of the Little Bear and Franklin cartoons is quite thought-provoking, and brings to light many of the questions that have haunted me about anthromoporphic animals since I first wondered why Pluto couldn't talk...but I think you may be off on one small point. It's "opposable" thumb, not posable. The new America's Next Top Model dolls have a jointed waist specifically for posing purposes, and are therefore "posable", but I do not think you meant that thumbs in this context were primarily for looking pretty and being photographed.

So while you can pose your thumb in all manner of creative and aesthetically pleasing ways, I think you were hinting at the ability of primates and some marsupials to grasp with a digit that faces the remaining digits...allowing for better grasping, and a degree of fine motor control absent in other animals.

Hm. That's one thing that I can't figure out how to emphasize more: most of these aren't mine. I give credit lines and beg for new submissions, but I don't want people to think I'm doing it all myself.

Having said that, there's a great line in The Yiddish Policeman's Union about Pluto and Goofy, but I read a library copy. Might anyone who owns the book give me that quote? I thought it might be funny to put up as a Mini-Analyzation.

The Toy Story thing is brilliant.

I've heard the Ratatoullie thing before, but great site. I'll have to think of something to contribute.

IF I wasn't so busy writing reviews I'd surely submit something. I'll talk to a friend of mine and see if he wants to contribute.

Something interesting for you to analyze, Mr. Sodium, is Veggie-Tales. I wil start you off by saying that it is recruiting material for fundamentalist christians. Try the Lord of the Rings special. The greedy Gimli-stand-in dwarf who says "Oy Vey" all the time is all kinds of racist.

My apologies, Mr. Sodium. I was too busy over-analyzing the typo for comic effect to notice the byline. I love the site.

No problem. I'm just a stickler for people to get their proper credit. I went ahead and changed it to "opposable" in the article.

Thanks for the comments. I'd love to have some chewer submissions.

I'm sure Veggie-Tales are fertile ground, but I'm not sure I want to go to the trouble of watching any. If you write up a few sentences about it, I'll put it up in my next batch of short ones.

I'm getting a lot of hits today, but I'm trying to lock in that long tail of return visitors.

At least once a day, people come across my site after searching for Lilo & Stitch pornography. I guess I've just found my target audience? They're going to be disappointed.

Yay! I see that my friend Blake finally contributed. I'm so proud.

That and the new Venture Bros. one are the first non-link-to-me submissions I've gotten in months. The internet's a lot different than it was 10 years ago, when I would get at least one a week. I'd expected people would be more willing to send in their one-sentence-long stonerthoughts. It's annoying, but I find it just as interesting.

Blake's comic book and cartoon knowledge is dauntingly impressive, and he talks about it with such good humor. I just assume he can write well too, and I'd like to see him do something great with this wellspring of socially useless information. I've honestly considered starting websites just to get him going.

Here's a typical day of search engine referrals to my blog:

Still getting about 200-300 hits a day on average. Passed 100k total hits a couple weeks ago. Yay, me.
