Late Night With Conan O'Brien - Page 3

I didn't realize that Conan's version of the Tonight Show didn't start until June 1.

Here's some bittersweet news:

Conan O'Brien taps Andy Richter for 'The Tonight Show'

Andy Richter will reunite with his old Late Night buddy, Conan O'Brien, NBC announced today. The comedic actor has signed on as the announcer of NBC's The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien, which begins June 1. Richter -- who gave up his post as Conan's Late Night sidekick in 2000 and went on to headline two TV series, Andy Richter Controls the Universe and Andy Barker, P.I. -- will also be seen in the new show's comedic bits. There was apparently a tease of this reunion last week: Richter returned to O'Brien's couch for his final Late Night telecast on Feb. 20.

Andy Richter returning?
Joel Goddard leaving?
It won't be the same without Joel but he'd probably want to stay in New York anyway. I imagine moving his entire Asian male harem to L.A. would be expensive.

It will be different without Joel

Then again Joel wasn't really that big a presence as a character on the show until Andy left....correct?

At least Max and the Band will be staying.
Yeah, both Joel and Max really had to step up to fill the void when Andy left.

I really would have loved to see all four of them doing their thing in L.A. Perhaps Joel could be one of the guests on the first episode.

This reminds me of two bits they didn't revisit. The first was when Conan did a month long thing of threatining to fire LaBamba unless they re-released Dirty Dancing to celebrate some anniversary. And the great Grady from Sanford and Son search.
I kept meaning to post in here and ask if anyone knew whether Joel was headed to L.A. or not. Guess there's my answer. But it will be cool to have Andy get back on course to being the true heir to Ed McMahon. That's not really a bad thing as long as you don't blow all your cash before passing away.

Which is funny because Friday nights at Rage. Joel would have been in heaven.
If Andy is going to be Ed to Conan's Johnny he's going to have laugh a lot harder and louder and kiss some major ass.
I guess the other bummer about Andy rejoining Conan at this point is that it kind of proves he couldn't maintain a successful career on his own, despite some very noble and funny attempts.
You have to think that after 3 failed TV shows he might just want some steady work.
Remember Richter in CABIN BOY? God he was great in that. I wanna watch CABIN BOY now.
It looks like Fox knew he was going to get this gig since Andy Richter Controls the Universe is set to finally come out on DVD in a month.

"Here's how a hula girl dances."

"Yes, thank you for that."

Yes. In fact it would not surprise me one bit to see him show up on Fallons show.
No way is Fallon that smart.
so is fallon already destined to fail?

some of his internet stuff hasnt been half bad, and I like that he brought the ROOTS on board as the houseband.

Interesting note for the angelinos, Conan will be doing his show out of Universal Studios and not NBC studios in burbank.
The Roots are the house band?

Goddammit, now I have to watch Jimmy Fallon.
I'm willing to give Fallon a fair chance. Not really, he's gonna stink.
He'll have ?uestlove to bounce off of though. That has to count for something.
Not really, you can't really do better than Conan and Max regarding back and forth banter.
I'm not saying he's going to be better than Conan and Max. I'm just saying, I'm a big fan of ?uestlove, who's a hysterically funny guy, and that will be enough for me to record the first few episodes, and give it a chance.
I don't know, I'm not that aware of ?uestlove outside of his music, so I have no idea how funny he is.
I don't know much about ?uestlove so I'll take Patrick's word on the fact that he's a funny man.

Ya know who I like is Young MC.
He's always been great in interviews and has the kind of insight into hip-hop (and music) history that Scorsese or Tarantino have into film.

Also very funny off the cuff in Dave Chappelle's Block Party.

Though The Roots as the house band makes this one step closer to being "Mantan: The New Millennium Minstrel Show". Which is also awesome.
One thing I am gonna kinda miss though are the weird little James Lipton segments; I find his sad face to be hilarious.
The recent 2 hour Inside the Actors Studio where Lipton interviewed Conan was a good watch. Except for the very end when some of Lipton's students belted out a Conan-ized version of Thanks for the Memories to Conan and Conan had to awkwardly sit there and pretend he thought it was good.

He's an entertaining dude to follow on Twitter. @qoolquest

There's been some fun insight into behind the scenes stuff at NBC over the past couple of weeks. One morning, he posted, "Man, having a real job is HAWD."

Andy! Yay!

Happy, Happy, Joy, Joy on Andy's triumphant return!

Perhaps Godard's just retiring. He'll be 71 on March 31st. I was intrigued to learn that he grew up about an hour from where I did and that his birthday is one day after mine.

Am happy about this turn of events. Esp. that Andy will be in skits again.

I'm willing to give Fallon a chance although i'll have the show on a short leash as far as my viewership. I give it 2 shows before Horatio Sanz shows up in some capacity. And I still think it's odd that DeNiro will be his first guest...wasn't Conan's Shatner?

Here's hoping one of the first bits is driving the desk around LA.

Isn't De Niro kind of a notoriously terrible interview? Does he WANT to fail?

Maybe they want to boost ratings with the anticipation of a train wreck.

I recall watching Conan's first show. The two main guests were John Goodman and Drew Barrymore. Also, George Wendt was part of a bit where he was in the audience and wanted to leg-wrestle Goodman.

I liked the show from Day 1.

First guests don't mean much in the grand scheme of things. Magic's first guest was Arnold.

Conan was awful tonight. He wasnt funny at all and his hair looks awful.

I turned Fallon off just before they started "slow jamming" the news. That monologue BOMBED big time. I've got the rest on my Tivo...but I dunno if I should bother watching it.
Was any not predisposed to hate it ?
I really tried to give it a fair shake. But I was asleep before Fallon's monologue was over. Pre-DVR, I never fell asleep during Conan. Thankfully, my DVR allowed me to watch Conan over breakfast the next morning and now, also thankfully, Fallon will free up more space on my DVR.

Conan had his fair share of stupid skits (though there usually was something funny about them even if it was just about how absurd they were) but having audience members lick things? Really? That's what you start out on?
