This game was completely off of my radar after the kinda fun, but kinda mediocre Blue Dragon. The thing which sold me was the weird as fuck TV Spot using White Rabbit. Which can be seen here

This gameplay footage reveals it to be Turn Based...

http://www.eurogamer.net/tv_video.php?playlist_id=7095

...which is a little off putting, but there's just something about the design and scope of the game which is drawing me in and it'd be nice to go back to ye olde skill less level grinding RPGs after stuff like Oblivion.
Yeah, been following this pretty closely and it looks like a fun little game. I enjoyed Blue Dragon for what it was, but this is shaping up to be a bit more polished. The premise alone, while I'm sure it's been done before elsewhere, sounds pretty cool and it should be good for a few hours in between endless sessions of Oblivion and going through Mass Effect for the fourth time.

I knew absolutely nothing about the game aside from the trailer on XBox Live (with the huge battle) until I saw that TV Spot. I'm kinda looking forward to another RPG with Future Tech, a lot of the architecture and stuff reminded me of FFVIII which been the closeted FF fanboy I am had me very excited.
As long as that's the only thing that resembles FFVIII, I can remain excited. This does look solid.

Goddammit, went and misspelt Odyssey like a birk.

I also do worry, from that battle footage, that the bestiary of Blue Dragon has been shifted across to LO.

I'm also coming out of the closet as an FFVIII admirer. So many summons!

I always liked FFVIII tonally, I liked its story and its design and the music, it's just a shame about the actual gameplay.
Yeah. Also, the story was a disaster. But it had a certain je ne sais quoi.

FF VIII just took the FF story dynamic to its logical conclusion and turned the game into one long soap opera, with an overarching plot. The thing which upset people was how apparent the fluffy Soap Opera parts were, but I kind of thing that set piece lead, serialised style of storytelling could have taken off if FFVIII hadn't been hated so.
Aah...FFVIII, my greatest conquest. Not because it's the greatest FF game (III, VII, X), but because during disc switch I lost my saved games not once, but TWICE! When I finally beat it, it was the most glorious thing in the world.

Will second the music love, it's wonderful. 'Eyes on Me' was played at my buddy's wedding and it was absolutely lovely. Such a great song and one that still gets heavy rotation on my playlist.

Two words: "Time Compression." I'm still a little confused about what I was trying to prevent from happening and who the fuck the space bitch was and what the hell I was doing playing it toward the end. The characters were fun and the music was great, though.

I also lost my save game during the fourth disc switch. 60 hours in, and I lost everything. There was much profanity.
You know, I knew nothing about this game either until the tv spot played while I was watching Enter the Dragon last night on tv. White Rabbit was such a bizarre choice of music for what I was seeing that I became instantly intrigued about the game, and then I saw the 360 logo was even more shocked. Figured it had to be another Playstation Tales of Final Lunar Crystal Vagrant Dragon Symphonia Chrono Fantasy. Intrigue gained 342 exp, Intrigue leveled up!

So basically, 'what you said, Spike'

Ouch, guess I'm spending the rest of the week grinding my rep back up in the Club District. Man I hate that zone, the mobs are usually too high level and all I can do is mash on the run away button. :/

I would question what Time Compression was, but the main villain turned into an Isoceles Triangles and lives in a castle held in the air by chains the size of a train. That's about as much rationale as I need.

I heard the load times on this were a bitch... anyone hear if that's changed.

I don't want to wait 30 seconds before randomly battling a giant walking cactus.

No mention of Load Time issues boomstick.

I know, these are firm britishmen, strong willed and stiff upper lipped.

This game must have an emotional punch akin to watching a kitten being punched to death.

It's a videogame forum. That last excerpt was akin to Beaks in terms of reviews.

Most rounded comment I can find is this

Quote:
30 Hours in and at the start of disc 3. I'm playing with Japanese VA and English subtitles, which is good but lacks lip-syncing of course. My expectations were high for this game - to say the least - and they've been surpassed.

The music, cutscene direction, and dreams (where's my English print?) are all incredible. Combat system is very enjoyable thanks to the ring system which is the spirit of GoW's active reload. And I also really like the guard mechanic and the graphical flair in battles - Blue Dragon this is not.

LO does have a few minor flaws, though I can really only think of the slowdown during cutscenes and the rare occasion when the random battles begin to grate (they're fine overall). That and the character design of Ming - Queen? lolz.

Edit: Just realized something else worth mentioning: LO doesn't require grinding. As long as you have some interest in exploring, it shouldn't be impossible to beat the bosses. This really let's the game progress nicely.

While I'm sure this game would be a good, indeed pleasant, opening to the genre, it's worth noting that LO has a lot of micromanagement (it becomes habitual/addictive) and the boss battles do require some strategy. The difficulty was a bit "hot" in the beginning, but it's progressed to "just right".

I just saw a little blurb about it by Luke Plunkett on Kotaku:

Quote:
My copy of Lost Odyssey arrived today, so expect impressions in a few days. What I can say now though is that after playing it for a couple of hours today, the technical glitches that marred the game's Japanese release have all been sorted out. Oh, except for the "animation system that looks like it was ported straight from a PS2 engine". That's still there.
The TV spot is interesting, I guess; but the gameplay looks dull. I remember one video showing off a sequence where the characters fought against a wave of bad guys just to hit some sort of pipe, and the number of turn-based menus you had to get through was interminable.

Given my weakness for Final Fantasy, though, I'll probably give it a rent.

I guess that makes three of us, then. Was everybody else using crappy third-party memory cards?
That tv spot was fucking cool. Been awhile since I've tackled a JRPG, but that ad sold me. I'm such a lemming.
I had this game mistaken for The Last Remnant. I swear TLR and LO look so similar.

It wasn't a memory card issue for me. The first time it shit the bed, I thought it was. So I got a real PS1 card. But when it happened again (and therefore losing everything once more), I realized it was the disc that was wonky. So, naturally, not wanting to give up now, nor wanting to buy the game again, I rented out a copy from the local video store, switched the discs and voila! problem solved!

Shit! Why didn't I do that with Kingdom Hearts 2?
Isn't this a JRPG? Yeah. Not interested.

However, I am interested in where one Mr. Jon Cassady deciding where it fits in, quality wise, to the Final Fantasy series. Which is a series I'm also not interested in.
It's a JRPG made for us Americanos, who like JRPGs. Which is confusing.

Anyone pick it up yet? I'm pressed for time (plus two additional RPGs...damn you Oblivion!). I've been hearing generally good things, though I hear the story is kind of 'eh'.
I think I'm going to pick this up on thursday. I still have DMC4 to beat but I should be done by then. Aside from Oblivion, I don't own any RPG's for my 360 so this should help fill the void in my collection. Only thing is I don't have the time for rpgs like I used to have so I hope that I'll actually finish this. If not, it will be sitting next to FFXII and Rogue Galaxy.

I've read about that. I haven't owned a game with that many discs since FFIX. As long as it won't fuck up my 360, I'm cool with it.
I'm picking this up on the way home today. I'm kind of excited despite the reviews that are all over the place. I haven't played a game like this in a decade.
Come on people talk about this game....It's the best RPG since the FFX. This is in my mind the real FFXI. Forget FFXI and FFXII ever happened, those were not Sakaguchi. I'm about 10 hours in now and the game story is just so damn moving. It has gotten me choked up about 3 times already. Emotional stories in RPGs is what has been missing since FFX and the FFs on PS1. The graphics are probably the best on 360 and reviewers talking about frame rates really need to lighten the fuck up. The frame rate drops when loading a battle scene for like 1 second, jeez OMFG itz THE END OF THE WORLD...... This game has less slowdown than Gears of War and Mass Effect, so it isnt a problem at all. The load times have been fixed for the retail version, so don't believe that part of reviews as well. Gamespot is rumored to be releasing a revised review of the game based on that. Game Informer released a statement as well to them holding back their review due to the retail version being different than the reviewer versions sent out.
I'm squinting really hard, but I can't tell if you're full of shit or not.

I hope this is good, though. I would love a decent JRPG on the 360.
I was at walmart yesterday looking for this game but couldn't find it. I asked the clerk about it and he said, without looking, that they didn't have any in stock at all. He did have a look on his face that told me that he didn't give a fuck but whatever, I picked up Burnout Paradise instead. Maybe next time.
Fuck you, forget FFXII. If I were an angrier individual, I would invite you to become consumed by flames until you ceased to live.

As for Lost Odyessy, it looks absurdly JRPGish, but since I never learn, I will be giving it a rental just as soon as I return another annoyingly Japanese game, Devil May Cry 4. LO is going to have to work hard to be better than Persona 3 in recent JRPG olympics.

So thoughts from people who have it, us Brit scum have to wait til the 29th to play it.
I'm only three hours in, but if this was Final Fantasy XIII, I wouldn't have flinched.

Has been story-heavy (and very slow) for the first three hours, but hoping things speed-up. Also I always hate when there is no overworld to explore.

As a positive, as Chud's resident Final Fantasy apologist, the game feels very comfortable.
