good review, Chris.

and you're completely right, this film DRAGS. when Fulci holds back on the gore he renders himself pointless.

though his stuff can still be fairly crap when he goes the other way (see Cat in the Brain)

Just took this one off the queue. Thanks for the heads up, Chris.

I really have to be in the mood for Fulci, but he's best when he's over the top. Duckling was great.

Thanks for the praise Disciple. Glad you enjoyed the review. I actually think this one turned out pretty well.

Also, not a problem, Minsky. Like I said, it's not necessarily a bad movie, it's just so terribly boring. By the mid-point I found myself having a lot of trouble focusing on the film, because there was nothing to engage my interest. The worst part is, the opening is so great and unexpected, the fact that the rest of the movie doesn't live up to it is a big disappointment.

I still need to see Duckling, as the only other Fulci flicks I can remember seeing are Zombi (which I fucking love) and The Beyond (which is pretty damn good). Again, though, those are ones in which he gave in to the excesses of gore, so they can't really be compared to The Psychic.

Don't Torture a Duckling is closer in spirit to The Psychic than his later higher gore quotient output (Zombie and on), so adjust expectations. It's definitely a better film than The Psychic though. A satisfyingly disturbing giallo, with the film's power coming more from one key revelation rather than Fulci's directing skills. A pretty messed up idea.

As for the gore highlight, it's VERY The Psychic. I bet Fulci would have appreciated a good fell-off-the-ugly-tree line.

I really like The Psychic. Then I also think Fulci was a fantastic director of images, so I suppose my opinion is rather moot in most eyes. I'll always like his gore films the most, but The Psychic, Don't Torture a Duckling, and Beatrice Cenci are all pretty classy features (spiked with ridiculous violence, of course).

Damn, I wish Sevren would return my emails.

I barely remmeber anything about the Psychic, but Don't Torture a Duckling is much better. Many more memorable moments New York Ripper is fun as well. BTW good review Chris.

I'm sorry, Creature Corner is blocked at work, so I'm unable to read the actual review, I'm trying to gage it based on these ractions.
Chris, did you know that the RZA remixed the theme for Kill Bill? QT uses it in the Dressed to Kill inspired super slow motion revel of The Bride behind the door just before slicing Buck's heel.
That was probably in the review I couldn't read. If so I'm sorry for wasting this discussion.

I was sure I'd heard the theme somewhere before, and I was pretty sure it was in one of the Kill Bill movies. I forgot to mention that in the actual review, but the music in The Psychic is pretty good.

I really dug this flick when I rented the vhs, then subsequently purchased it. I'll be picking up this flick some time.

Yeah, Fabio Frizzi's very underrated. I've got the City of the Living Dead and Beyond main themes on my ipod. He wasn't as flashy as Goblin, but he struck me as the literally low rent Morricone in several of his better Fulci scores. It's that same mix of styles Morricone was famous for, but more electronic due mostly to monetary constrants. I adore the off-beat drum machine on the Zombie soundtrack.
