Lethal Weapon 3 (1992)

Is it good? No. But it's Lethal Weapon, so I adore it nonetheless. Mel Gibson is so good in these films, and watching him play off Danny Glover is always a treat, even though Danny is given less and less to do with each passing film.

What an awful intro, though. Slow motion fire? That's it? And that opening scene was the worst as well. They find bomb, they try to defuse bomb, they screw up, bomb explodes. That's it? Really?

Also, the aspect ratio for all these films...I was going to bluff, like I knew what I was talking about, but I don't know shit about aspect ratios. But I do know that these films use a very wide screen, and I love the way it looks. And the scores for all these films are great. And Joe Pesci is great, even though his character changes every movie.

I'm so glad Richard Donner did all these.

Best sexy sax theme song ever-
"Ah hate tuh say it... ah HATE tuh say it... it's probably you..."

Is this the one that ends with a shootout in a housing construction project? Something about cop-killer bullets? No Gary Busey, no "but, but, you're black," no "diplomatic immunity?" No thanks.
Yes it's the one that sucks.
"Oh no! Riggs! Ah killed a bebe!"
*cue Boyz 2 Men funeral march*

Definitely the worst LW entry. Tame action and violence, fewer decent laughs than the others, and flimsy overall. I believe the LW series follows the STAR TREK pattern in that the even-numbered ones are the best.

Bonus points for:

* Danny Glover lovingly guiding his son's hand as he shaves for the first time. "No, no, with the grain." Is this scene accompanied by poignant sax music? My memory is fuzzy.

* actually, I think that's about it.

You're right - I too love Gibson in these. It's the role of his lifetime. Everyone wants their very own Riggs in a tight situation.
This is the one with Rene Russo right? And Mel with the ponytail? Yeah, this one's dumb. Bought it a couple months ago in fact.

I watched this back-to-back with The Last Boy Scout after I bought it. One of the most fun double-features I've ever had.
So Patrick, you really like this more than part 2?

I'm fine with 3. The opening bomb scene is a nice way to set up Rog's "retirement" and it leads to their brief demotion which leads to Roger admitting that he wears a girdle. I would have liked it to have a little more of the edge that makes part 2 so enjoyable but I'll take it any day over 4. ANY DAY.

After watching this again, no, 2 is definitely better. I'd have to watch 4 again to see if I prefer that one to 2 or not (I rememeber really liking 4) but this one is definitely inferior.
Doesn't he run after a subway train in this one? You know, after the baby faced rookie cop introduced just five minutes before dies tragically in a gun fight and he must be avenged and cop killer bullets and hey let's send Joe Pesci to a hockey game for NO reason!

As for that shaving scene, it's like a touching bookend to the special moment Murtaugh shares with his daughter Riahhnahne in LW1. After his entire family sings happy birthday to him in the tub she lingers behind to stare lovingly at his horse cock floating in the bath water.
I remember the end fight in #4 being pretty brutal, and loving it, but that's nearly all I remember about it, and I've only seen it theatrically.

Back on topic, I've never actually seen LW 3. For shame?

2 is Wrath of Kahn to 4's Insurrection.
Even as the Lethal Weapon series' biggest fan, I don't revisit 4 much. It's the Insurrection of Lethal Weapon movies.

4 had an okay car chase from what I remember. Correct me if I'm wrong.

EDIT: Goddamn you Bob Clark!

Hahaha, I never noticed that in Lethal Weapon. I love the constant implication that Riahhnahne is a cock-hungry slut.

Other great Lethal Weapon 3 moment: Roger, piss drunk, pointing a gun at Riggs, yelling at him to give him back his whiskey.

"That's a fine lookin' daughter you've got, Detective Murtaugh..."
"GO SPIT!"

It probably did, but all I remember is racist jokes about "chinamen" and larfs galore when Chris Rock goes to the dentist.

Oh, and jinx buy me a coke, Eaton.
Is 4 the one with the armored car chase and the bizarre security guard hitting on Roger and singing throughout the chase? Because that was cinematic ebola.
not really.
Not missing much.

I rank them 1, 2, 4, 3
except for that "we are family" bit at the end of 4. I refuse to count it.
I only remember three things about this movie.

1. The "Jaws" scene with the wounds
2. The Pinball game at the local pizza hut
3. Everyone in the movie being blown away at the idea of LA having a subway.

That was 3, and I found that fat lady charming. An early 90's Mo'Nique I say.

4 has a decent car chase, a guy with a flame thrower, and a cool 2-on-1 fight at the end. Other than that it's sin.

I've been watching these quite a bit lately, and there's a weird bullying vibe to them. A key moment in 3 is when they terrorise that jaywalker. I haven't seen it in a while, and the guy may be a douche, but I remember it being unwarranted. A lot of weird stuff like that in the series.

Part 3. Black women are so crazee.
4 was childish at times; the chinaman jokes specifically. 3's on TNT practically every waking moment, so there's really less of chance of me not watching it in the next week or so.

I forgot all about Chris Rock being in 4. Was he one of the cops? I can't remember. Hey Bob, why don't you go grab the DVD and look on the back of the case to see who he pla----oh wait. That's right - I forgot.
Chris Rock plays Murthaug's son in law. And badly.
Yeah he was one of the cops in 4 and he was (SPOILER!!!!!!) banging Murtaugh's daughter while the wife was writting romance novels.
While I like all 4 Lethal Weapon films...I would rate LW 4 over LW3 for the great final scene of the main cast together. Also Lethal Weapon 4 had a great villain in Jet Li, a fantastic car chase with Riggs and Murtaugh driving through an office building, the laughing gas scene where Murtaugh finds out who his son in law is etc.

But what about Riggs' TOTALLY KEWL jacket that he wears in every single scene? I can think of no better way to hide a middle-aged actor's paunch!

4 is good fun. Long and silly, yes, but fun. And Jet Li comes close to being terrifying. Certainly on par with Gary Busey, and better than that frail 50-year-old South African man in 2 who is somehow good enough at martial arts to give Riggs his money's worth.

"Motherfucker, you dumb motherfucker, you know what genocide is, you know what genocide is, you're killing us, you dumb motherfucker, now tell me where this motherfucking gun came from!"

Danny Glover's finest moment.

Hey now, don't rip on Derrick O'Connor. His speech about killing Riggs' wife is one of the best moments in the franchise.

Oh, I did like Riggs' jacket in LW4. Wasn't happy with the hair though.
Danny's best moment in 3 is when he mutters "Piercin' bullet shit."

For years I misquoted this as "Pissin' bullet shit", and I said it often. I was anguished when I learned the truth. But some of the sting was taken from the wound when I realised that the original quote made virtually no sense either.

Eh, I thought she was good stuff.

Renee's character was a great addition and made me wish that I might one day find someone that hot who could take one on the chops and liked the Three Stooges. You know, besides my dad.
I can't believe anyone here thinks 4 is better than 3. 3 was heading down the comedy path a bit too much, and had a weak villain, but 4(Jet Li excluded) is a fucking sitcom.

1 and 2 are almost on par in my eyes, but I think 2 gets the slight edge.

I think that's just a little nod to realism in a series that became increasingly outlandish. Riggs and Murtaugh may be heroes, but they at the end of the day they are cops in LA.

LW3 was released soon after the Rodney King riots. The crooked cop storyline was suddenly relevent.

Not to mention the use of "Cop Killer" bullets was also an important issue at the time

It was also released during that magical period of 1991-1993 where every movie released took place in Los Angeles. Go ahead, think of one that didn't. Tough, I know.

Was anyone else worried that Captain Murphy wasn't going to make it out of LW3 alive? I thought his time was up for sure.

I'd be remiss if I failed to point out that both Patsy Kinsit (sp?) and Rene Russo helped me through some hard times in my youth.

The best line delivery in the series is still in 3. Murtaugh cooking burgers: "Sweet, sweet meat!"

My ranking of the series is 1, 2, 3, 4...
I'd pick 2 over 1 except for Gibson's Australian accent keeps popping up too much (more than in 1 and it isn't in the others) and the fact that the #1 South African henchman is the one that (spoiler) killed Rigg's wife. I didn't like how that was just thrown in there...as if you needed more reasons to hate white apartheid-loving South Africans in the 80s.

Although Rika van den Haas was a nice love interest in 2.

Loaded Gun was better than Lethal Weapon 3
