Yeah, and you can see a spring sticking out at a funny angle. That almost made me laugh out loud, which is huge considering how much I was saddened by the death.

Wow.

I just had to say that before I hit the sack. I just watched this brilliance and I'm in love with everything about it; Farrell and Gleeson, the noir touches, the black comedy and the overall mood this film cast.
This movie is absolute gold. I watched it last week On Demand, definitely on my list of DVD must owns at some point soon.
Saw it this week, and really, really liked it. It's just so resolutely odd. I can see where it would put some people off, but I hunger for anything different, and there was a lot to love about the way it was pulled off. Farrell and Gleeson are able to convey things with nothing but eyebrow movement that a lot of actors can't push out with a page of dialogue.
I'm not familiar with this guy's other work, so this really took me by surprise. I was intrigued by the setup, which calls to mind The Dumb Waiter, but then it goes on to touch on a lot of different stuff: from purgatory and sin to films within films and Don't Look Now... all while being very funny and instructing the audience on the proper way to do karate on midgets. Definitely need to see this again sometime.

Still blown away. One of my favorites of the year! Funny, suspenseful, and at times, oddly moving. Though his moment as the next big thing might be passed, Collin Farrell is fantastic here. Charming performance. Gleeson is also great. His acting during the tower scene..wow!
I saw this over the weekend, what a great film. I had heard it was funny, but knew nothing of the darker elements. Not much to add beyond what was otherwise said, but I did love the callback joke about the American having a heart attack in the tower the day before.

I misses the scene where it is revealed that Harry got the killer of Ken's wife. I'll have to watch this again very soon.

I missed that piece of information the first 2 times I saw it. So d'oh on me. On the third viewing, I really appreciated how very little of this movie is random despite it coming off with a sense of randomness.

Bottles and karate. Hehehe.

I also didn't register the fact that Chloe and her 'boyfriend' rob from tourists the same way Ray was ambushed. When she said 'rob tourists' I thought it was more along the lines of pickpocketing. Yeah... I'm stupid.

What a fucking movie. I love the all-over-the-place tone, it actually made the allegorical aspects feel more real. Someone smarter than me has said that tragedy is just comedy without the distance. I love how so many parts of this movie could be simultaneously tragic or hilarious depending on how you decide to look at them.

YOU'RE A FUCKING INANIMATE OBJECT!
Just caught this today (finally), loved loved it. You guys have covered most of the things I wanted to say about this, so I'll add that I loved Ray's coked up confrontation with the midg-dwarf at the bar (You two are wierd), Fienes telling the blind boyfriend how it was his fault, Ray's excitement over midgets being filmed, and the lines:

One gay beer for my gay friend, one normal beer for me because I am normal.

and ...little fucking cunt... after his wave was ignored.

So glad I just went ahead and bought this one.
Watched this two days ago and I find myself saddened that I skipped out on the opportunity to see it during its theatrical run because it's an absolute fucking blast, and it easily makes my top five for the year.

It really feels like all of the hype surrounding Farrell, all of the "he's about to happen", "he's the next big thing" lip service, finally came together with this film, a unique piece of work ironically ignored by all those who had their eyes on Farrell not five years ago.
This makes my top 5 for the year, but I've already made two edits to that list, and I'm not touching it till January.

Still...this thing is so fucking great, nailing down the one scene that stands out would be selling it short.
I knew it was only a matter of time before people embraced this. It's too good not to find a following.
All this talk is only making me want to see it again. I saw it half asleep and i while i liked it, i didn't love it.
My best friend had the DVD for a couple weeks, and he and his wife watched it 3 times. I've watched it twice since getting it back last week. My favorite bit has to be the "what the fuck does a sweet man need to know karate for? He a Chinese sweet man?"
Jesus Wept what a fantastic film. I had zero interest in this until a friend of mind threatened to disown me if I didn't see it. Easily my favourite movie of the year without question. Lately, I've been having a bit of a crisis of sorts as I have hated every film I've seen this year other than Iron Man, but this one elevated my poor sorry spirits enormously the way a fucking cracking good slice of cinema always does.
There was about 30 seconds toward the end when Fiennes started chasing Farrell and Burwell's score suddenly got cranked up; I was suddenly pulled out of the film and felt it lapsed into a bit of an action movie cliche moment all of a sudden, but the fact that only 30 seconds or so of the movie felt off is a example of how flawless I felt this piece to be.
I had no problems with the tonal changes at all, in fact their almost elegant effortlessless was what I responded to most. I can't wait for whatever this guy does next. Im posting from a library so thanks to this thread I just reserved The Pillowbook.
Thank you, Gentlemen!
That'd be The Pillowman, Matt. And you are in for a treat.
Either that, or he'll see Ewan McGregor's penis... as he may have already seen it before!!!
Just finished this and, while I really dug it, I have to agree that without the acting it's a lot less desirable. I honestly don't understand the comparisons to Hot Fuzz OR Kiss, Kiss - two movies I've seen several times. This was fun, but very very simple. I dug that it found a way to balance real emotion with slick, hipster bullshit and yeah - Clemence Posey is gorgeous. That's about as much coherence as I can muster at this time of day.
I was really surprised by how funny it was. Had to pause it when Farrell ran into the fat Americans and the guy chased him. "You are just the rudest man."
Also, the fact that the tower is closed at the end because the guy went up there despite the warnings and had a heart attack...

This is about as good as I've seen Farrell be, as someone said: he has great comic timing.

Fiennes owns every scene he's in, though:
"YOU'RE AN INANIMATE FUCKIN' OBJECT!" - oh, how often I will be using that quote.

"You fucking recant that bit about my cunt fucking kids."
"I recant the bit about your cunt fucking kids."
I liked the film, the actors were all good, especially Colin Farrell. I would say it is also his best film. I would definitely rate In Bruges higher than Hot Fuzz.

Has anyone seen the Brendan Gleeson/Jon Voight film...The General, it is simply Gleeson's best.
This movie is great! I can't believe I haven't seen this until now.

Colin Farrell karate chopping the midget in a coked out frenzy may be my favorite bit.

Hell fucking yeah.

You don't know Karate!
This was honestly the most entertaining movie I've seen in quite a while. The acting was spot on, the script was near perfect, and it provided everyone on screen with a good role. By far Farrel's best work. I was surprised how good Fiennes was, I've never seen him do this type of work. I'm laughing now thinking about some of the lines... 'YOU'RE AN INANIMATE F**KING OBJECT!!!"
Fiennes's "Eye,Aye" gets me everytime.
Yup, still laughing from this movie days later. I know its depressing as hell in bits, but I find it infinitely funnier than tragic. Same with Tenenbaums. My friends all think I'm nuts for calling it a comedy. Still, I'm gonna recommend this to everyone I know.

Seriously, they're the ones who're nuts. The film's hilarious.

"You heard me, Coltrane"

How can anyone watch Gene Hackman in Tenenbaums and not have a big smile on their face.

Golden globe nom for picture, Colin, and Brendan.

They wont win, but Im very happy they got noticed.
Fuck Yeah.
We need a thread for the nominations... is it considered a "scoop" ???
Good to see them both get nods for their work.
No Screenplay nom, though? Bullshit.

Indeed. I also believe that if Tom Cruise could be nominated for Tropic Thunder then Ralph Fiennes outstanding performance should have gotten recognition as well.
Cruise is in the movie for like 5 minutes. Fiennes owns every scene he's in, and he's there a lot. Fuck that shit.

That settles it: I'm watching 'In Bruges' this weekend. It's been on my to-watch list for a while, but this moves it to the top.
You. Will. Not. Regret. It. It's a blind buy.

I still maintain it's by far the most entertaining movie of the past few years.
I was kinda lukewarm about it for a while, but i really came to appreciate it. I want to see it again.
I'm happy for any recognition the film gets! Though it feels like the film came out last year or something...
I think the fact that the Globes don't split their writing awards between adapted and original material is what hurt In Bruges. The fact that it was remembered at all (I've been rooting for Gleeson as a dark horse candidate for Supporting Actor for a while now) is pretty awesome. McDonagh's already an Oscar winner, so it may pick up a nom for Original Screenplay.

Really? I thought In Bruges was pretty terrible. There were a few mildly funny parts, but overall, it sucked. I really wanted to see it and was disappointed because it was worse than I could have imagined. It's the kind of movie that thinks it's more important than it is, and has the feeling of someone who is not the least bit cool, trying to be cool and edgy........ just like me.... and I hate me.....
Nice to see this movie finally getting some of its due. I randomly threw this on my Netflix queue, and it's one of my favorite comedy's this year. Would love to see Ralph Fiennes get a surprise supporting nod this year for this one, because it's one of the best things he's ever done.

Sounds more like you're describing a Guy Ritchie movie rather than In Bruges...

Eh different strokes for different folks I guess. Personally this and Kiss Kiss are at the top of my rewatchability list for the past few years.

KKBB is probably my most entertaining movie of the past few years. If you've put both of these films in the same league, then I'll just go ahead and blind-buy the thing for this weekend (per Martin's suggestion).

It is. Really.

You may appreciate it more or less, but unless you're like RCA and you scrape bird shit, mold it in patty, fry it and then eat it while saying it's filet mignon, you'll at least smile through it. It's really well written, directed and acted.

And KKBB is one of my favorites by the way.
My recommendation may not come with the same cache as Martin's, but I couldn't agree with him more. In Bruges is definitely worth a blind-buy and is in my opinion just as memorable as KKBB.
