I read Devin's piece this afternoon on lying in Hollywood and was surprised to see that when I checked the corresponding thread there were only three comments while the talkback on the article had twenty comments, many of them just firing away at Devin randomly.

My assumption is that talkbacks help ad revenue by getting more hits to the main website pages that have the more abundant (and probably more profitable) ads on them and as a business decision that makes sense. However, I am battening down the hatches for the storm that is coming: Specifically, an onslaught of anonymous* hate directed towards some writers, complete apathy towards others and a combination of less movie related talk on the boards mixed with an increase in drama spilling over from the talkbacks.

I don't know how the technology for the function works, but I'd suggest requiring some type of sign-in to post there. If that isn't possible, I think the drama and bile is going to explode from the main page even more so than it has from the boards in the past.

Anyhow, I created this thread to A. Discuss everyone's thoughts, perceptions, etc... on the talkbacks and B. Mention that anyone who posts on THESE boards and than posts attacks on the talkbacks under a different name to save themselves from being called out on it are complete pussies. Maybe no one is doing it, but if you are, you need to grow up.

* I understand the irony in discussing "anonymous" posting while using a fake name, but my point is that we all answer to the other board members and staff when we post on the boards while the front page talkbacks are the wild west.

I would think the IP of a user posting anonymous hateful stuff on the TBs could be traced real easy-like.

I agree with pretty much all that.

Also, without a 'log in' to post talkbacks, will identity theft be an issue? I know that sounds stupid, and God help me if I'm putting this idea into anyone's head, but whats to stop someone from just entering their name as 'Nick Nunziata' and completely burning someones article, writing a bunch of racist or shill or whatever comments, and leaving a fake email to dodge the bullet.

Obviously we'd know it wasn't Nick filling out 10 talkbacks with dick-enhancement cream ads, but what's to prevent it from continuing other than deleting bogus messages when we spot them?

Same here. I'm so used to the site without them that I usually click to the next article or over the boards as soon as I'm done reading the main page. It's not automatic to keep scrolling down yet.

As long as they're not blocking the ads, I don't give a shit what people post about me in the talkbacks.

There will surely be some trolling for a while, but that will die down over time when they don't get any response. The talkbacks are extraordinarily valuable for people who want an easy way to comment on stories without dealing with the nonsense of a message board. I'm all for them.

Don't get me wrong, they are great for people too intimidated by the board culture, or when we just want to get out a quick comment while going through all the new articles, a great addition in those regards. I'm just hoping it doesn't turn into the new trolling/flaming no-mans-land, is all.

And yeah, it probably will die down once it isn't the new, exciting feature everyone wants to fuck around with. If putting preventative measures into talkbacks requires a whole new membership database like the chat room/community section did, then not really worth the work just to stop some lame asses from shitting in that area.

Horrid became a hall-of-famer in record time..

Also, the talkbacks are super-easy to moderate. They're a playground, yeah, and if people want to be crazy/stupid/hateful there, no problem. Anything that gets out of hand or is actually counter-productive (shilling/spamming) can be deleted with a wave. Easy stuff. I'm all for them.

I ran a t-shirt giveaway on a website and one day we were inundated with an unexpected surge of International requests. Turns out someone posted the giveaway URL on a "free stuff" board on a European website.

Is there something like a term for a "Talkback troll"? Because surely comments from guys like number 9 seem to indicate that people with profound knowledge about the boards and its inhabitants use the mantle of anonymity to basicly throw around insults at random writers and themes. Who else would know about our own Duke Fleed? Surely his legend hasn´t grown even more out of proportion than it already has. Or has it?

Anyone know how to do line breaks in the Talkbacks? Do you use a regular HTML line break, like "</br>"?

I'm having trouble getting the text to break between the paragraph where I tell Owen that I am posting as his grandmother's possessed vagina and the paragraph where I tell him to kill himself out of shame for besmirching the family's reputation with his avatar. Thanks!
