Official CHUD Chat DVD Watch-a-long thread

You read that correctly. Props to whoever thought up the idea first, but it changed from a 'gee that would be neat' idea to a 'let's do this shit!' plan in chat tonight, thanks to some people doing a Roy Schneider/ Jaws memoriam viewing in there.

We also decided that the first movie should be Big Trouble in Little China, because it's well loved, and if anyone doesn't own that, WTF! Stop reading this and go drive to the local Best Buy or whatever and pick it up.

Now naturally, being people from numerous time zones and with different work situations, there's no way to schedule this to fit everyone's needs. That's when you start planning events in here yourselves, lazy bones! Anyway, since Jake was around in chat tonight and put in a request, we'd like to see this first event fall on a night that isn't Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday. I'll throw my vote in for Thursday as I sometimes have a life on the weekends, but frankly this is a democracy rules situation so whatever the general consensus is will be the plan. I'm really just the thread creator on this one.

So, what days/times work for anyone who wants in? Let's start doing some time zone math and shit!
Evenings and weekend work for me. I'm in Wisconsin, so the Central time zone. Just let me know when, and I'll try to be there.
Yeah, I hate to be a party pooper, but MTW are out for me since spring session starts back up this week for me and I'll be pulling 13-16 hour days again and trying to fit the rest of my life in between work, class, and impromptu strongman/Oly/Crossfit training. Everything else? Gold.
I'm game for anything in the evenings. I'm eastern.

I wanted to suggest that we shouldn't pause at all during this if someone's jumping in and needs to get the right time. If anything, we can give them a timecode to use when they load up the DVD, and then they should fast forward about a minute and give everyone else the timecode. When the rest of the group hits that timecode, they will let the slowpoke know so we can be all synchronized and happy with no delays.

Fuck, that was confusing.
I'll definitely try to do this, now lets fucking decide on something. I have nothing better to do being between jobs, so Thursday is alright with me.
Weekday evenings are best for me. Friday and Saturday nights I'm usually out.

That's easy for you to say. What am I to do? Go out and buy the nearly barebones one that is on shelves now? The 2 disc special edition is OOP. So I can either try to get a cheap used copy on ebay or I can wait for FOX to fuck us with a barebones Blu-Ray version too.

I don't sleep much and Thursday night is okay by me.

I have the 2-disc BTILC sitting on my player, right now, actually...

Agreed. You can find one for 5 bucks(possibly less now), and although it's "barebones", it has the commentary which is the best extra of the double.

Thursday is good for me.
Thursday's cool with me also, now if you don't mind, I'm just going out to get myself a copy of the movie.
I can do Thursday as long as it's after Lost.
I just bumped BTILC to the top of my queue, and I can do Thursday night, also as long as we're talking after Lost. I might not be able to go the whole distance since I have work the next day, but I can definitely make it to the start.

Love this idea, Trejo, thanks for getting this started.
Weekends and weekdays after 6 EST i'm game.
Trejo, are you gonna decide the time by vote, or by the most Chewer-heavy timezone?
Are we going to all jump in the chat while watching it? or get a dedicated thread to it?
I loved this back when Joe Bob did his TV show. They had a live chat on at the same time the movie was going.

I'll be into it if we did something similar.

I think the general idea is everyone jumps in chat at whatever time we decide on, goes to 'scenes' and gets chapter 1 all highlighted and ready to rock, then 5..4..3..2..1.. everyone clicks it and boom. Exorcism Synchronicityitycitycitistys.

Lisa, not quite sure yet. It makes sense to do it whenever the most amount of people can get in on it, but trying to figure out what timezone everyones in for finishing up Lost is going to scanners my brain. When is that lame old show on, anyway?
If you do it on Thursday, don't forget us MST'ers. Is 11PM EST too late for everyone?

And I thought you were my FRIEND! Dead to me!

(New episode starts at 9 PM Eastern, pooh bear).
Awww, I really wanted to do this with you guys. Damn me and my PAL DVD's...
I should be able to do this on any day of the week as long as it isn't too early (since I'm a west coaster). Anytime after 7pmPST/10pmEST should be gravy.

I'm a MST'er myself.

So lets see, all the Lost geek-uh.. I mean, Lost fans want to start it at 10 EST? Is that correct? So 9 central, 8 mountain, 7 pacific.

This works for me (at least, I hope it does. I totally forgot Thursday was Valentines day), anything later is probably pushing it for the Eastern folk. What's everyone think of that time frame-ish? Say 10:10 EST so everyone can unglue from their television sets, take a leak, make some popcorn, try to find where they put the dvd that they should have had ready all week long, that sort of thing.

We'll go with popular demand.
Crap. This Thursday is Valentine's Day (must remember!), and I'm going to the Grand Canyon with the wife next week for the 2 year anniversary, so hopefully if this succeeds I can join you all for the 28th.
Oh christ, I forgot about Valentine's Day.
Well, me and my fellow single-types could do this as a dry run... work out the kinks and stuff. Then, when all you committed-types (hee!) can join in, we'll have this machine well-oiled and ready to rage.
Sounds good, I'll be a Single-ton guinea pig.

Does that mean you can't do Thursday, Jake?

If so, screw that I'm moving it to Wednesday or something haha. Stupid excuse for a 'holiday' falling on my Big Trouble in Little China day.. I can't miss that movie in CHUD chat!
Yeah, I'll be busy preparing a candlelight dinner of lobster and filet mignon for my left hand.

I can do Wednesday if we have switch, but I might be a couple of minutes late, nothing major. We have a work meeting at job #2 when the store closes, but I should be out by 9 PM.

You a southpaw or do you always treat yourself to 'the stranger' on special occasions?

Also: I can't tell if that's a serious anwser to if you can do Thursday or not lol
post #32 of 322
I can do Wednesday, maybe. I won't be in until after midnight... but, the world (sadly) does not bend and move at my will. So, if Wednesday it is, I'll just stock up on some vodka and ginger ale and cry as I ponder the "could have beens" whilst I head toward the sweet oblivion of inebriation...

Screw it, I'm making an executive decision on this one.

We'll go with the "original" plan on Thursday. Most everyone agreed to that already, Valentines or not.

I once had Big Trouble In Little China on tape.

I never bothered watching it to the finish.

And I taped over it.

Deliberately.

With the Time Life Soft Rock Collection infomercial hosted by Air Supply.

God I'm a devil-may-care badass.
(*Gets all excited over Trejo putting his foot down with the Valentine's crowd*)
I'll try to be a part of this. Kinda late for me at that hour, but we'll see.
The gal is working this Thursday night, so I'm in.
I got excited by this, then remembered about the time difference between the US and Europe and wept.
I'm thinking I should do this because I'm probably the only one who hasn't seen Big Trouble in Little China, so that may make it fun. Of course, now I have to go out and get it.
You'll hate Big Trouble Patrick, I know you will.
Well you got that right, I definitely hate Big Trouble. But Big Trouble in Little China, I dunno, it looks pretty good. John Carpenter, Kurt Russell, looks promising.

Frankly, you better like it. 'Cause if you start a thread about why you hated Big Trouble in Little China, I'll have no choice but to bury you in a shallow, unmarked grave somewhere in Illinois.
You actually saw Big Trouble?
Yessir. The book was funny. At least it was funny when I read it 4 years ago.
I read somewhere that it was "Pulp Fiction meets Madcap Follies." Ignoring the fact that there isn't even a film called Madcap Follies, is this true?
It was more like Get Shorty meets lame.

Not to tell you that you have to join us if it's too late for you, Spike, but you're normally in chat around that time anyway. How late would it be for you there if we started at 10 PM Eastern?
7pm Pacific Time = 10pm Eastern Time = 3am London time

I repeat my petition for the entire planet to just use Pacific time. It's the coolest time zone!
