Favre's "message" to Chris Mortensen:

"...If I felt like coming back -- and Deanna [his wife] and I talked about this -- the only way for me to be successful would be to win a Super Bowl. To go to the Super Bowl and lose, would almost be worse than anything else. Anything less than a Super Bowl win would be unsuccessful. I know it shouldn't feel unsuccessful, but the only way to come back and make that be the right decision would be to come back and win a Super Bowl. And honestly, the odds of that, they're tough. Those are big shoes for me to fill, and I guess it was a challenge I wasn't up for. "

Perhaps, but are you seriously ready for the Arron Rodgers era??

Well, if I'm not, I'm in a big heap o'trouble.

Let's put it this way - where is the glaring area of need on the GB roster (assuming Rodgers is a halfway competent QB)? The OL had one of the best sack ratios in the league, despite being a pass-heavy offense, and road-graded for 200+ rushing yd in two of the team's last 3 games. The WRs are pretty darn good, and deep. TE depth is an issue, but Donald Lee had a Pro Bowl-level year. RBs aren't particularly spectacular, but Grant was a stud down the stretch, and Jackson, Morency, and Herron have all been productive at times, so there's some talent and depth.

On D - they traded Williams, which kinda sucks because he was probably their most dynamic DT, but that leaves shock absorder Ryan Pickett, as well as promising young DTs Colin Cole and Johnny Jolly, along with last year's #1 Justin Harrell. DE is Kampman, Cullen Jenkins, and KGB. LBs are the solid-to-very-good Barnett and Hawk and run-stuffing animal/pass coverage liability Brady Poppinga. Two young S in Atari Bigby (NFC Defensive Player of the Month for Dec) and Nick Collins (who looked to be all talent, no instinct but played better with Bigby next to him), not to mention 2nd-year guy Aaron Rouse, who made some plays when he was put into the game. Harris slipped, but he and Woodson are still in the upper tier of CB combos - again, depth behind them is an issue.

Rodgers steps into a team that, while maybe not being the Pats or Chargers talent-wise, has really no glaring personnel issues and strong continuity in the front office. He is in one of the better positions to succeed.

I'm not expecting him to play at an MVP level, but if he can be another Hasselbeck/Trent Green type of QB, I'd be happy.

Ok, Chavez, clearly you're a Packer fan. So let me ask you, do think that Farve's retirement had anything to do with them NOT luring Randy Moss away from the Patriots? Just wondering how Packers feel about the rumor that Philly and Green Bay each offered Moss MORE $$$ than NE.

I know there's a seperate thread on Farve's retirement but i just have a few things to say about it here if i may.
First, I was a big B. Farve fan. I can't think if QB over the last 10 years or so that was more to watch on Sunday than Farve was. Also, he was guy that you knew loved what he did. Watching him play was like a kid on the playground.
And i know alot people feel its sad to know that his last pass he'll ever be remembered for was an interception but i think that he went out on somewhat of a high note. The Packers were 8-8 the previous season and few thought they would be as good as they were this season. Who's to say that he got as far as he was gonna go. Wining the SB is so freaking hard. Maybe Brett took GB as far as he could. I'll def. miss watching the guy play on Sundays.

Really, to me it was a matter of "how much better does Randy Moss make GB?" Given the level Favre played at, and the production of their WRs, I felt the answer (last year and this coming year) was "not all that much." Let's face it, with a better coach and better overall talent, NE only made it one game further than GB did.

And that was with Moss in a PERFECT situation; he didn't have to lead, and Belicheck, Brady, Seau, etc draw enough water to be able to stand toe to toe with Moss if he isn't doing what he's supposed to do. In GB, only Favre could probably have filled that role.

Did I think that Moss last year was a gamble worth taking? Yeah; he would've come pretty cheap - we've seen what motivated Moss can do, and it's impressive. We've seen what UN-motivated Moss can do, and that's pretty pathetic. Do I think that Moss THIS year was a gamble worth taking? Given the talent/depth of their WR corps and Moss' increased price tag, not so much.

I certainly wouldn't dispute that; from what I've seen of the coverage, he just felt that while he could still perform on Sundays on a physical basis, he didn't have the will to endure the grind of preparation. And in the NFL, if you don't prepare properly, just fucking forget it.

I always forget about the Sports forum here at CHUD.

I've been following alot of football this offseason and was wondering if anyone has some advice on good NFL draft sites?

I've only found a couple - nfldraftcountdown.com and nfldraftguys.com.

Am looking for more. The nfldraftguys site has a link to a video they do that breaks down prospects - draftguystv they call it - that's been kinda cool.

But am looking for more and frankly, the ESPN stuff is either insider or mel kiper (PUKE) so I can't get it there.

TIA

And on topic, I think Aaron Rodgers might surprise people - he has a decent o-line, a pretty good run game if Grant wasn't a one hit wonder and a good WR core. He looked good against Dallas. Although he hadn't looked too good prior.

But I',m a Jets fan so at this point,....... well I might take anyone if Clemens doesn't pan out.

Five yard incidental facemask penalty? Forceouts on receptions? GONE!

Good riddance to that incidental facemask rule. With how fast the game is now, too many guys reaching for a shoulder pad and barely brushing a mask were getting screwed.

I also like the defer option. It seems like the only reason they had that in there was just to make the NFL different from College Football.

Maybe their willingness to adopt college rules means they'll eventually get rid of the ridiculous spot-of-the-foul pass interference rule.

Rumor has it (from all places, the WWE's Good Ol' JR) that Jeremy Shockey will be traded to the Saints before the draft. Ross said he spoke with Shockey (who is from OK) and Shockey said he was looking forward to playing for New Orleans.
