God of War: Chains of Olympus

Old thread = dead

Just got an email from Playstation Underground reminding me that this comes out on March 4th.

Official Site

The videos and screenshots look pretty hot. This will be the first PSP title I'll be picking up in a long while.
Yeah, I got the same email. The demo was good. I'm really looking forward to this.
I know it's old as shit, but I just got the first GOW for the PS2 and I'm loving the shit out of it. Lots of fun. I can't wait to finish this and pick up GOWII. Hopefully they'll get one together for the PS3 someday.
The PS3 one is in development. I'd imagine it'll come out sometime between winter of this year and spring of next year (more likely spring though). I really want to play Chains of Olympus but I'm not buying any more video game systems. Instead, I'll have to bide my time and then eventually pick up Chains of Olympus when it is inevitably released for PS2 8 months after release on the PSP.
That would be cool to get that for the PS2. Where in the story does it fall? Between 1 and 2, or between 2 and 3?
I'm pretty sure it's supposed to take place before the first God of War.
Just checked out the site. It looks like a prequel. The trailers makes it look good too.

Have you played the Heavenly Blade game? It seems like a similar type of game. I think that it's by the same developer, but not sure.

Heavenly Sword is by a different developer but it has somewhat similar gameplay. I've never played it but from what I heard it's not nearly as good as God of War is (and supposedly it's quite short, maybe 5-6 hours long).

God of War doesn't really do anything particularly unique but it does a good job of providing interesting puzzles and awesome massive boss battles while you single-handedly and brutally tear through Greek mythology.

Chains of Olympus is supposedly the part of the game from where Kratos first kills his family until the beginning of God of War I where he's going to commit suicide. I haven't played the first God of War in a while so I don't know if those are spoilers or not so I blacked them out for safety.

Two reviews are up of the game. Both are in the mid 90's:

Gamepro and IGN

I'm mostly just glad to see that new teams can work on these franchises and still make a great game. Obviously Barlog played a role in the development but it was still handled by an outside team. I can't wait to play this game (well technically I can, and will probably wait until I can get it for PS2).
Thanks for the info man. I'll keep my fingers crossed that the game gets ported to the PS2.
1UP gives it a 95 as well.
Anyone want to buy my PSP and all my games?
Nice PSP bundle with God of War.
So has anyone picked this up? I got it earlier today and it's exactly what I wanted: God of War on a handheld. Not sure if it's been announced already, but the back of the instruction manual has an ad for GOW3 for the PS3.
I'm a few hours into it (and in the last third already, I believe). It takes a while to get used to the controls (specifically the L1 block is farther up from the left hand movement control - that gets painful during frantic combat).

But it's a pocket sized GOW, and I dig it. It gets better as you power up your Blades. Some cool new moves.
I'd read some reviews that said they thought the controls were almost better than the standard DualShock ones because you know longer had to take your thumb off the buttons to dodge.

I'm still really interested in this but I'm not going to be buying a PSP so they'll have to figure out another way to get my money.
Funny. I'm actually buying a PSP for this game. Well that and the added functionality of the PS3 and this.
If they're smart they'll release a PS2 version later on in the year...
Yeah, if I had a commute at all (I work from home so I don't) or traveled, I'd have no problem justifying the cost. But when I generally spend 90% of my day about 25 feet from my PS3, I can't really justify spending $170 on the system.

There are definitely some games I'd like to play on it though--Crush, God of War, R&C, Daxter, and more--but I'll just keep waiting and eventually playing them on PS2 when ported.

As far as God of War goes, I'm sure they'll release a PS2 version around Christmas.
I actually got a PSP when I noticed my girlfriend never played her's and I asked if I could have it. If I didn't have one, I can't say I'd buy it just to play this game (unless you REALLY hate having to take a break from playing GOW because you have to take a shit).
You think the PS2 version (which, face it, is an inevitability) will hit this year? If ever there was a system-seller for PSP, this is it. I think they'd want to wait until sometime after the first of next year to port it over.

Well, I based it on the fact that if they release a PS2 version, they'd want to give it some time before the PS3 God of War. I'd assume that God of War 3 is coming Spring '09 (every new God of War game has come out in March).

The only way I can see this change would be if Sony thought it would be worthwhile to hold God of War 3 back until Christmas and use it as a way to move PS3's. In that case, they might release the PS2 version of Chains of Olympus in the spring and then do God of War 3 in the Fall/Christmas.
The demo was good, but it made me remember that I haven't played God of War 2. I was going to pick it up, but shouldn't it be a "greatest hits" title soon? I can wait a little while longer if it's dropping to $20.
God of War 2 is great. I know you can find it for $30 used. Now that it's a year old, it should be hitting Greatest Hits sometime soon.

That would be sad news. Xmas 09 for GOW3? That's a drag if it happens. Even waiting for a year until next march kills.

I'm 3 hours in (started in Spartan Mode), and the game is great so far. The controls work great and the camera has been well placed. No complaints so far, but I did notice my PSP ran out of charge earlier than usual but that's expected since this game bumps the CPU speed to 333mhz option. The recent Syphon Filter did the same. I need more orbs!
Still waiting on my amazon.com shipment. I love me some GoW! And I don't have a PS2, so this will be the only way I'll be playing this.

Now, with the PSP's increased processor speed (333 mhz), I'm hoping we see a RE4 port or some other RE game in the same style as RE4 in the near future.

Ha, that means nothing. I mean, Halo 2 was still $30 into this year until they officially made it a $20 game just a few weeks ago!
The first God of War dropped to $20 after about a year. Sony doesn't quite screw you over on 'Greatest Hits' like Microsoft does.
Nah, they save that for when they want screw you over by $200 and force you to buy their Blu-Ray player.

Well, if Ready At Dawn (the developers of the game) are to be believed, there won't be a PS2 version of Chains of Olympus. From their News section:

We can also confirm that this will be our last God of War game as, just like Daxter before it, there will NOT be a PS2 port of the game. We like our games PSP exclusives
I have a better question for you, why do you hate money? PS2 ports are free money, just do it!

"I will cut off my own head if Resident Evil 4 ever comes to the PS2." Some Japanese dude. Who also lied.
Yeah, they're not going to say it's coming out on the PS2 the day after the game's PSP released. If that was said in the Fall, I'd be more inclined to believe them.

Hey look, a secondary weapon that's worth a damn.

The controls are pretty good, but one minor quibble is that you can't cancel you move until it's either finished or get hit. This can lead to some minor frustration in places.

Well that was a short game. I plowed through it on hard in about 5 hours. It's a lot of fun though, but at $40, I'm sad to see it over so soon. I've dug into the challenges and they are quite brutal. I'm on the second one which requires that you defeat 20 enemies without getting hit (or blocking).
But this is the developer, and the only other PSP game they've made, Jaxter, hasn't been released on PS2 either. This is comparison to most every other Sony controlled IP, which has had the PSP version ported (Silent Hill, R&C:Size Matters, etc.).
I never thought the PSP was possible of this type of graphical shenanigans. This simply looks glorious.

This is pretty much the only reason I wish I wouldn't have hoc'd my PSP. Still, though, as much of a rabid fan that I am of God of War, I just can't justify spending that much money for one game (it's like... PS3-syndrome all over again). I loved the little gadget, but I'm not much of a handheld gamer (if I have free time to game, I'd rather do it on a console) and I was primarily using my PSP as a portable MAME station.

Still, though, I'm glad it turned out so wonderfully. I knew it would look amazing after playing Prince of Persia: Warrior Within and seeing how amazing it was.

I'm almost done playing through on the harder version (as opposed to Normal), and I agree completely with Alex's review: this game is glorious. Now I just need to figure out how to beat the final boss (spoiler) Persephone (end spoiler), who is just kicking my ass all over the playground at the moment.

I am also logging a few more hours of playing time than most seem to be reporting, and I'm guessing that has to do with Normal vs. Hard also. I'm just a glutton for punishment when it comes to this series.
Tieman,
It's a ballbreaker at harder difficulties. For the end boss, I recommend the following:

Equip the Gauntlet, dodge (double jump) her BIG lunge, and hit the boss with ONE punch (square). Don't charge the punch, unless you feel comfortable with the timing. That'll cause P to do the short lunge (which is a double strike). Just jump away (double jump) and the second attack will miss you, and you can punch again (rinse and repeat). P won't go to the rock toss very often (and do not jump to avoid that, just run perpendicular to P. If you can get close, take a cheap shot at the end. Use Charon's Rage every now and then as well.

It's more important to avoid being hit than it is to hit.

Once you get by Phase I, the next phases are pretty simple.

I agree with the review. It's a great game. I never though they could do the art direction and scale of the first two on the PSP. I am quite pleased to be wrong.

I've been having a problem where the sound cuts in and out (usually out). I can sometimes get the sound back by moving the joystick around for some reason. It seems like all of this started when I loaded the upgrade. Is anyone else experiencing this problem, and is it the upgrade, the PSP or the game itself that is causing the problem?

Dammit!
I am just now playing this and I love it - just as much fun as GOW and GOW 2 - it is an amazin handheld game...

Question for those that had beaten this: can I actually beat the Ferryman? I get to the point where he jumps on top of that ledge and nukes me!?!
VT,
Yes with a but, no with an if.

At this stage you can't, as you are missing something you need to beat him. You'll see Charon again when you can administer a complete beatdown.
I finally, FINALLY, after much delay, conquered this game on difficult (two days of power gaming).

This isn't a mere portable version: it's fucking awesome. Any of you who haven't played it yet, you're missing out. It was worth the price of PSP admission all by itself.
Can I have it now? I traded my PSP in.
