Live After Death. New Iron Maiden DVD

Goddamn, I received this today, and I really can't wait to get home to see it.
I wore out the LP when I was around 12, and I'm pretty sure I remember every tiny detail, down to shouts from the audience.
It'll be really weird to finally get the video as well as the sound.

They'll be touring Europe this summer with songs from the albums; Powerslave. Somewhere in Time and Seventh Son....

Yeah I played the shit out this LP as well, and glad I can finally replace my VHS copy of the concert.

The DVD is actually a two disc set, first disc being the 90 minute Live After Death show. Disc two contains Part 2 of the History of Iron Maiden documentary. The first part is in that other DVD set, "The Early Days" I think it's called.

I've only watched Live After Death so far. There's 5.1 audio in addition to stereo. The disappointing thing is that there seemed to be nothing done to restore the video, I'm not sure it looks any better than my VHS copy. But I'm still happy to have this on DVD.

I've had my copy for a while and keep meaning to review it for the site.

I actually like that the video hasn't been much restored -- it feels right.

The doc is good (if you're a fan -- it's not for the casual viewer at all) and there's some pretty great shit in the other live footage. Loved seeing Dickinson throw a mini fit during the Rock in Rio performance because of the monitor levels.

Here's the setlist from the kickoff show of their Somewhere Back in Time tour. It's a little front-heavy, with too much stuff from Seventh Son near the end. (A good album, but not nearly as good as the four that preceded it.) Still, I'd probably pay $50 just to hear Rime of the Ancient Mariner played live.

01. Intro - Churchill's Speech
02. Aces High
03. 2 Minutes to Midnight
04. Revelations
05. The Trooper
06. Wasted Years
07. The Number of the Beast
08. Run to the Hills
09. Rime of the Ancient Mariner
10. Powerslave
11. Heaven Can Wait
12. Can I Play With Madness?
13. Fear of the Dark
14. Iron Maiden
-----------------------------
15. Moonchild
16. The Clairvoyant
17. Hallowed Be Thy Name

It's awesome. Everyone should get a copy as soon as possible.

I'm mildly annoyed that The Early Days dvd had multiple shows, but this release (with part 2 of the history doc and coinciding with the tour) only has the Live After Death show and not other full shows like the Maiden England video from the Seventh Son era.

So many "Tap" moments!
Floppy armed Eddie, Dickinson's hilarious feather mask... I love it.
Iron Maiden are fantastic live, though.

Seeing Maiden live next month in Toronto. Should be an epic show!
Ahh, Maiden.

It's so good of you to play NYC and Toronto and Texas every year and play in the Northwest every 15...
I think they're still mad at you for that whole grunge thing. Don't take it too personally.
My paycheck can't get here fast enough. I'm a Maiden whore, they just flat out rock.
They just announced some more US dates at the official site,
They are playing Seattle in June.
I am gonna puke with joy.
Fuck, still no where near Boston.
They're playing Jersey, and if I can make it to the show from Atlanta, you can certainly get there from Boston.
I hope to see Maiden this year. I live in North Carolina, a state they never play, and the last time I went out of state to see them was in 2003 (I saw them in Chicago). I checked the U.S dates they announced so far, and the best bet for me looks like Houston or San Antonio. But I hope they do add dates for D.C and Philadelphia, as there closer to where I live.

Scott Ian from Anthrax trying to get me even more excited:

I lost my voice at the Maiden show last night so the video-blog of the day is gonna have to wait.
Maiden were amazing. They were on fire and the audience reacted in a way that I haven't seen in LA in forever. The LA Forum was more akin to a sold-out show in Europe than the usual seen it/done it bored LA audience. The crowd was singing everything. And not just the words, the melodies as well. The energy in the room never waned and Maiden kept delivering knock-out blows. Rime Of The Ancient Mariner was my favorite song of the set. Lars leaned over to me and said the great thing about Rime is that we never have to worry about if our songs are too long!! The rabid crowd ate up all 12 minutes of it.
I was at the sound-board with Lars and we were 21 again singing every word. I have been going to Maiden shows since they opened for Judas Priest in 1981. Anthrax has played over 100 shows with them. What I'm saying is, I've seen a lot of fucking Maiden shows and last night was a special one. The band is at the top of their game, arguably better now than ever. Steve Harris, whose unwavering vision for his band has carried them in to that rarified air that only a few bands ever get to breathe, is an icon and an inspiration as a musician and a person. Ever the gentleman, and at the same time the embodiment of all that is metal. And Bruce, holy crap, what can I say? The "air-raid siren" nickname still holds true. He hits every note. Every fucking note. Not an easy task even if he was just standing there concentrating on the vocals. Fuck that. The man rules that stage like Wolverine in a fight. He must log as many miles onstage as he does flying the Maiden jet!! It just goes to show how full of shit all these acts are that run backing tracks because they can't sing and move (or god-forbid dance) at the same time. I was completely blown away by Bruce and can comfortably say he is the best frontman alive. He showed me last night. Dave (let's play poker buddy!), Adrian and Jannick were ripping (i loved when there were 3 Strats onstage) and the triple harmonies were perfect.
I'm still buzzing from the show and I'm going to crank Powerslave as soon as I finish this. Lucky for the rest of the U.S that they're coming back in May and June for a full tour (i am officially submitting Anthrax for the opening slot!!!). I'm jealous of my friends in NJ that get to see them in a few weeks. Wear your diapers because you're going to crap your pants.
Was last night the re-birth of metal in LA? It's like KNAC never went away.
Up the Irons!!!!!!!!
Cheers,
Scott

Nothing's confirmed yet, but I've heard rumblings of a Boston date. The rumor I heard was that the band will be announcing the rest of the North American dates in mid-March, so keep your eyes peeled around then.

I've heard there should be nine or so dates in Canada. Outside of the already announced U.S. dates, there should be another eight (maybe more). Of course, I'd tell anyone to wait for a confirmation before getting excited.

Cool, I hope they show up. I've missed every gig around the area for various reasons since Bruce reunited with them. And the DVD is aces, well worth the 15 bucks.
man, i cant wait to get a hold of this.
Bravewords has announced more dates, but there's nothing confirmed yet from the band itself. This would be sweet, though. Ticketmaster had links up earlier for the Cleveland show before taking it down, so maybe that's a good sign that this is true.

I'm confused on one thing. The Iron Maiden site has those listed as the final US dates. So could the Canadian dates that our poster Iron Maiden had two posts ago still happen? I hope so.
Great Woods, sweet I love that place, more fun seeing a show outside than inside.

Maiden seems to be announcing these new dates when the band is in the country doing a show. The first half of the US dates was announced during the LA show; the second half was announced during the New Jersey show. I'd fully expect the Canadian dates to be announced during the upcoming Toronto show.
Well, speak of the devil. The Toronto show was tonight, and these dates were announced:

SOMEWHERE BACK IN TIME -- WORLD TOUR 08' CANADA SUMMER TOUR DATES:

Tue 03 June - Pacific Coliseum Vancouver, BC
Thu 05 June - Saddledome Calgary, AB
Fri 06 June - Rexall Place Edmonton, AB
Sun 08 June - Brandt Center Regina, SK
Mon 09 June - MTS Centre Winnipeg, SK

Not sure if there will be anymore or not.
YES! I needed that Regina date, thank you sir (well and thank you to the band and the bookers I guess (and possibly the bookies)).
I got my tickets today. Initially, I was thinking about getting general admission, which I've done before. Instead, I figured I'd just get seats this time.

June 11th!
June 3rd for me! They killed me in Toronto and now they'll SLAY me in Vancouver!

UP THE MOTHERFUCKING IRONS!
Sigh, not going to see them in Regina. Money's not there sadly. Hopefully it'll be there if the Heaven and Hell/Judas Priest/Motorhead tour happens.

Man this sucks.
I think these guys are basically the only "Big" Heavy Metal act I haven't seen yet. June 3rd is gonna be awesome!

I'm glad I found this post. I have the "The Early Years", and I've been waiting for part two to come out.

I actually looked at "Live after Death" a while back and had no idea "Part II" was part of the DVD.

Guess I better pick it up.
