EA EXTENDS NFL DEAL TO 2013

News by GamesIndustry.biz

Electronic Arts has extended its licensing deal with the National Football League and NFL Players to create and distribute American football games until 2013, GamesIndustry.biz reports.

As well as covering all forms of console videogames - handheld, home consoles and console-based online features - the agreement also allows EA access to NFL Films and the NFL Network "to enrich its game experiences".

"This is all about bringing authenticity and realism to NFL videogames," commented Eric Grubman, president of NFL Ventures.

"EA Sports continually works to maintain the cutting edge for NFL products across a variety of gaming platforms. We like the fact that they never rest."

EA's Madden franchise has genereated over USD 2 billion in retail sales, and 2008 marks the 20th anniversary of the series.

"For nearly two decades, EA Sports has been bringing sports fans closer to the great game of football through the breakthrough interactive experiences of our videogames," said Peter Moore, president of EA Sports.

"Game quality is our top priority, and we're committed to pushing our gameplay innovation, connecting football fans via rich online experiences and delivering the most visually stunning sports games on the market," he added.

F-ck you, Madden Acolytes...

What people seem to forget in the rush to bash EA is that the NFL initiated the bidding war for exclusivity in the first place, even though they seemed to be doing well when EA, Midway, and 2K Sports were making NFL games.

Is it EA's fault they had more money than 2K Games and Midway?

As long as they keep pumping out shit like Fight Night, skate, and Burnout, they can do whatever the fuck they want with/to football.

EA's made a pretty big strides in the last couple of months towards reversing lot of the bad blood between them and the rest of the gaming community. But, let's face it, Madden is their cash cow, dipshit sports gamers had their chance to trade up to the better studio's sports franchises, and they ignored it. Fuck them, but I've stopped blaming EA for the folly of very stupid people.

It's amazing what standing up to Faux News* and helping unleash the glory of Rock Band can do to gamer perception.

*While I appreciate what EA did, I think N'Gai Croal is most correct when he says it really should have been BioWare's fight.

I quit buying Madden 3 years ago when they'd add new stuff, but wouldn't fix the gameplaying AI. The only reason I have Madden 08 is because I bought a PS3. Every now and then I'll try NCAA again (because I like college football more than the NFL), but then the same ol' thing happens--I'll be up by 20 at the half, and then struggle to complete a pass or run more than one yard and watch the CPU drive down the field and score time after time. That's when I turn the game off and usually take it to Gamestop.

It should've been SOMEBODY's fight, and there's no guarantee anybody would've done it in EA's stead. It's safe to say Take Two/Rockstar has the money and power in this industry to have stood up for itself in the face of the whole GTA/Manhunt business, but it instead chose to play Tyler Durden to the mainstream media's Fuckin' Lou. The industry needs a bigger voice than that when it's getting shat upon, especially in the event (God fucking forbid) Hilary Clinton gets in office.

Whatever. ESPN 2K5 was one of the best football games ever, but I made my peace. I'm happy playing Tecmo Super Bowl on my Dreamcast.

Too true. Except Skate's appalling framerate on the PS3, which I can live with, but only because I love it so much. Screw you EA!

Now that 2k5 is BC, it is my 360 football game of choice. I just updated the roster ( which took days btw ) and I am prepared to stick it out untill either 2013 or a developer makes a fully customizable football game. I would like to think that eventually people will stop buying the crap that EA Sprots is putting out but with Maddens sales it seems doubtful. I love how they take aspects of football that should be " in the game " and sell them as new features. ( Read and React, Hit Stick, Player Weapons ect. ) I mean whats next ? Snap the Ball ? Its silly.

2K's "Legends Football," or whatever it's called, is all the football I need at a fraction of the cost of Madden.

I wish EA's MVP baseball came back though. I fucking hate MLB 2Kfuckyou.

I kept telling everyone I could find at EA that all we really needed was another Mutant League game.

Alex Riviello, How about the upcoming game Blood Bowl based on the War Hammer license, as BB seems to be similar to Mutant League.

Well, given that Mutant League was apparantly done by people who couldn't get the blood bowl licence, that should not be surprising.
Or was that Chaos league?

WOW! I just saw the trailer to Blood Bowl on it's official Website, and it looks Glorious. A football game that you play with the monsters and some humans of the Warhammer Universe. I hope this gets a US release, I would hate to see this fun, barbaric, NFL parody get bypassed.

Does the deal include exclusivity to the so called "Madden curse"?

You still enjoying that? It's like $10 now at Gamestop for the PS3. Will be buying Madden 09 in a few months when Madden 10 comes out.
