The Chicago Cubs March to the 2008 World Series - Page 2

Losing 2/3 to the Astros makes 14-6 tough. Thank goodness the Cubs get the Pirates for 3. 9-1 is a good start against a divisional foe especially one that plays above .500 vs everyone else.

Zambrano had 4 hits and is up to hitting .343 Look out Micah Owings.

The top 2 teams in baseball

Chicago Cubs 33 21 .611
Tampa Bay 32 22 .593

I would die if the Rays beat the Cubs in the World Series. But that would be just the Cubs luck.
Well, the Cardinals are only a game and a half back and have been neck and neck all season. So how about getting beat by them in the NLCS? Obviously losing in the World Series would be heartbreaking but if you lost to the Cardinals in the NLCS and then they won the Series, would that be worse?

Losing to a team that never had a winning record in the team history would be much worse.

I hope the Cub game was on Comcast because I have to see this comeback. Down 8-0 and 9-1 the Cubs came back to win with taking Lee and Soto out in the 6th and Ramirez sitting all day. Awesome.

Trivia question: When was the last time the Cubs had the best record in the league on June 1st?

Answer in black

1908

It's now or never for them.

A 7-0 homestand is great even if it's against some shitty teams. Now comes 7 on the road agains the Padres and Dodgers. Cubs are 9-4 and need to go 5-2 to attain the 14 wins I thought they should have had. Still possible esp with Zambrano starting the roadtrip.

Soriano continues to do his best Adam Dunn impression in Left Field. Brutal.

*Last year at this time the Cubs were 22-30, 7.5 games out. They were 10-16 at home. Big turn around.

Fuck. Sori is out 6 weeks w/ a broken hand. All the people that wanted to see the Cubs w/ Sori out will get their chance.

I would assume Hoffpauir and probably Murton will be up with Theroit or Johnson at lead off.

It was a fun game to be at despite the Sori injury and a stupid 14 year old sitting near me who kept on saying Norton sucked. I was glad when he left in the 5th. The "Jones sucked" screams were alot less.

The Atlanta Braves are no longer content with simply injuring themselves it seems, a frightening turn of events for the rest of the league.

*In my best Seinfeld impression* Who ARE these people?

I know Sori's getting paid A LOT of money, but I still don't get these people. In fact, I've got friends who claim to be Cubs fans who say they're glad he's hurt, that he's a liability and they're better off without him. Have they not been watching? Yeah, on occasion Sori will drop a routine pop-up, but he's been hot enough at the plate to more than make up for it. I don't get the hate.

The Cubs will be okay in the long run, they've got a couple decent homestands and the All-Star break in the next six weeks for Fonz to recover. I just hope he's back by the time they come out here to AZ in July for some NLDS payback.

Someone at the game Wed night really wanted to be noticed.

9 Series(28 games) before the All Star Break. 4 at home, 4 away, 1 on the south side. Cubs face some tough pitchers in the Blue Jay and Rays series with the top guys going in each. I would love 20-8 and think it is possible even with Sori out but I think 18-10, 17-11 is more likely and still good enough to get to the break with the lead.

The next 6 should say how well they can do.
You did factor in all the losses they'll get from when the Sox sweep them, right?

First time since 1906 that the Cubs have been 20 games over .500 this early in the year.

Even better the Cubs are starting to win on the road. Took 2/3 from the Padres, 2/4 from the Dodgers, and now 2/3 from the Blue Jays. Plus Lilly is heating up and even Marquis is doing well.

Only problem is Marmol is being used way too much. And he houldn't be because Eyre, Howry, and Cotts are pitching very well lately.

Some stupid Hall of Fame game is tomorrow. Cubs are bringing 15 or so minor leaguers to play though I believe Lee and Co. will start.

Bring on the Rays.

Would have been here sooner but I was on a ledge as soon as Zambrano went out. Frotunatly no structural damage so they may rest him a start or 3.

Even with Zambrano heathy they need another all star caliber pitcher. And with the injury scare they may need 2.

At $120-something million on our payroll, I'd have to get something cleared to add a lot more (payroll)," Hendry said. "But I've been assured that if we need to add a piece or two, we'll be able to do it.

"There's no doubt we have the money to get something done if we need it."
$5.50 beers, $50 dollar bleacher seats, scalping your own tickets better get you $120 million+ to get a championship.

There are only 2 people that would help the Cubs-Sabathia of Cleveland and Burnett of Toronto. I don't want Sabathia in NY and I know it will cost a ton to get him but you need 2 aces to win the World Series. When your likely first round opponent is Arizona with Webb and Haren you better have the arms to match up.

Will the Cubs ever win in Florida again?

Ozzie Guillen can be funny sometimes but today he was a classless piece of shit. After the game he was asked about Edmonds 2 HR and instead of saying something decent he ripped the guy for being a .218 hitter and that they weren't afaid to pitch to him and if he hit another 2 HR big deal. He said he was much more feaful of Soriano.

Guy has alot of nerve criticizing Edmonds when Konerko is hitting .215, Thome is hitting .226, and Swisher is hitting .235. Ozzie should fire his scouts because as a Cub, with consistant playing time, Edmonds is hitting .311 with a .581 slugging.
Ozzie wouldn't have any problem ripping any of those guys either.

Been awhile but the Cubs are still in first. Yesterday was a tough loss with Wood walking a few then blowing it. Still up 2.5 and lead the Cards 3-1 in the 7th. Zambrano is back and didn't miss a beat. Brewers are also back only down 3.5 games.

All Star teams announced and the Cubs lead the way(w/ Boston) with 3 starters and 4 reserves.
C Soto
LF Soriano
RF Fukudome(start in center)

Pitchers Zambrano, Dempster, Wood, and 3B Ramirez are the reserves.

I'm sure people will bitch that Sori and Fukodome don't deserve the start but that's what happens when fans vote. They should take it out of fans hands if the game counts so much now.

Possible Sori will be replaced and I hope Zambrano won't pitch.

Cubs Get Rich Harden from A's!!!!

That didn't take long. The guy has the injury bug but when healthy he's a legit #1 starter. Not sure about his stats outside spacious A's Collessium but he's a strikeout pitcher with 92 in 77 innings pitched.

Cubs gave up Gallagher, Murton, Patterson, and Donaldson. Gallagher is good, Murton blows, Patterson is a few years away and Donaldson???

Again if Harden is healthy the rest of year it's a steal. Cuns also got Chad Gaudin in the deal.
Awesome for the Cubbies and their fans. I hope he stays healthy. Gonna go read some Brewer forums.
God I hope Harden can stay off the DL....good move by Hendry.
Great deal for the Cubs!

Chad Gaudin isn't just a throw in he is a versatile pitcher who has lowered his ERA from 4.42 last season to 3.57 thus far this season. He will be a nice addition to our bullpen. I'm shocked we got away with this trade without giving up Vitters. Yes I know about Harden's durability issues but when healthy he is an Ace pitcher. The A's didn't get much in return. Gallagher is a nice pitcher but even if he pans out at best he is a 2/3 in the rotation.

I was reading an A's forum and most of the posters seem to feel we got the better end of the deal. They're basically hoping that Beane knows something the Cubs don't or that they're going to use the players they picked up in another trade.

Harden will start Saturday vs Kevin Correia and the Giants. Fox game too. There was some radio talk of having Harden rest till after the All Star break giving him 14 days off between starts but that looks to be. Not a bad idea though.

Chicago Cubs 55 36 .604 -
St. Louis 51 41 .554 4.5
Milwaukee 50 41 .549 5.0

Cubs gained 1.5 games on the Brewers since the announcement of the Sabathia trade. He can't start every game and had bad stats even though he won.

And Dempster and Lincecum on Sunday. the 10-0 at home thing could be in trouble.

57-38 Best record in MLB

Chicago Cubs 57 38 .600 -
St. Louis 53 43 .552 4.5
Milwaukee 52 43 .547 5

Cubs are on pace for 97 wins and 65 losses. I'll take it.

They only took 4/6 from the Reds/Giants but still managed to gain a game up on the Cards/Brewers. And Sori isn't even playing.

Only problem is Marmol. Lou continues to use the guy with 4 and 5 run leads in the 8th and 9th innings. Just don't get it. Hopefull he won't pitch in the All Star game as he was somehow added despite a bad last 3 weeks.

2nd half starts on the road with 4@Hou, 3@Arizona, 4vsFla(lost 10 straight), and they end the month with 4@Wrigley North. I'd like to go 9-6. Then 19 home games in August.

With the shitty Brewer and Card bullpens I like the Cubs chances. With Z, Dempster, Harden, Lilly, and a decent 5th starter(Marquis/Marshall) they shouldn't let that lead dip under 3 games.

What a difference 5 games make. Sunday the Cubs were down 5-0 to the Fish and the Brewers were up 4-1 on the Astros with the Cubs/Crew tied for first. Five games later Cubs are up 5.

Seems the Brewers don't respond well to pressure the last couple of years. By the 9th Gagne(all class) was throwing behind Edmonds(2 HR) on a 3-0 pitch and Fielder was breaking his bat after a fly out and cussed out the ump to get thrown out. They even had 29 HR guy Ryan Braun trying to bunt for a hit in the 2nd inning because the Cubs handled him so well.

Still a long way to go but this really hurts the Brewers.

And Gagne after the game.
Quote:
"I guess there's a rule that you can't throw in," Gagne said. "My thoughts don't matter. [The Cubs] played a great four games on us. They beat us. We got schooled."
You are allowed to throw in but not behind. It wasn't even close. McClung came in and aimed near Soto's head on the first pitch but that was trying to brush someone off the plate, not get one in Edmond's back.

Go Braves/Phillies

Brewers - CRUSHED.

Obviously there's still quite a bit of the season to go, but this really puts the Cubs in the driver's seat. And getting swept is troubling enough - but the last 3 games were utter and complete dismantlings. I don't even know if the Brewers will be able to shake this off psychologically for a while.

St. Louis 63 52 .548 6

A season high 23 games over .500 and a chance to knock the Cards all but out this weekend with the 3 game set.

47 games left At the current pace the Cubs would go 28-19 for a 97 win season with an outside shot at 100. It's gonna happen.

Ozzie Guillen and Tony LaRussa helped me turn the corner on him. Still weird but the guy has hit .280, 14 HR, and 38 RBI. Pie wouldn't be close to that.

And with the Cubs winning the first gme of the Cards series and Z/Dempster up, the Cards may but shit out of luck to win a game this series and could be 9 back. Brewers get the Nationals so the could extend their WC lead to 4.
Cubs win 6-2 and win the series 2 games to 3 against the Cards. A great defensive game for the Cubbies. Edmonds had a great catch that prevented a couple of runs from scoring. Dempster pitched another great one and made a couple of great defensive plays as well.

It was also good to see Woody get some more work in and pitch a nice inning.

It's so odd to see the Cubs 25 games over .500 and almost guarenteed a playoff spot. They are up 3.5 in the division and 7.5 for the WC over the Cards(tanking), 9 over the Mets, and 9.5 over the Fish.

It looks like the Cubs/Brewers division chase is meaningless. Hell if the Cubs lost out they'd miss the big 3 in Arizona. I wouldn't be sad about that.

Cubs up 4-0 in the 2nd in game 2 btw.

41 games left and 27 games over the .500 mark. Very sweet.

Fuck Cox and the Brewers for head hunting Sori. They already put him out 6+ weeks with a broken hand. Sure the posing is bad baseball but if you are going to send a message the head isn't the place to do it. Sori answered back today with another HR.

As for the division the Cubs are up 4.5 games(5 in loss column) on the Brewers and up 7.5(9 in the loss column) over the Cards. All but guarenteed a playoff spot.

And a good sign is the Cubs are starting to win on the road. 8 straight wins for the first time since 1945. Wonder what happened that year?

The next 12 are 3@Fish, 3vsCinn, 3@Pitt, 4vsPhil. Then comes September and all but 4 games(Mets) are against the NL Central. Cubs have the best division record with 33 wins and 22 losses.

Up 6 on the Brewers(7 loss) and soon to be up 8.5(10 loss) to the Cards. St Louis is really blowing chances to get the WC. Still possibility Mets/Phillies could leap both teams because the Brewers are very treaky. They may win 6 in a row but will quiclky drop 4 or 5 straight. And Sheets is choking big time.

And since getting Sabathia the Brewers have lost 2 games in the standings and 3 in the loss column to the Cubs though they have overtaken the Cards.

Rich Harden is an absolute stud. He's 4-1 as a Cub and his record isn't indicative of how great he's pitched. He should be 8-0.

32 games left. 13 at home and 19 on the road. a 16-16 record gets them 96 wins. Brewers have 32 games left(inc. today) and would need to go 22-10 to beat the Cubs for the division. Cards are worse. Playoffs baby!

Finally over .500 on the road-1 of 5 teams(Cubs, Angels, Phils, Brewers, Cards). The Cards and Brews play 2 games so if St Louis has any intention of getting the WC they need both.

I was scanning ESPN and noticed something everyone said would Happen-Dusty would ruin the arms of the Reds young pitchers. Sure enough Cueto is gonna miss start with a strained elbow, Harrang has been hurt all year, and overusing Edinson Volquez. There was a article I forgot to post on how Dust used Harrang in an extra inning game(3 innings) and a couple weeks later he was on the DL.

I knew they wouldn't beat Hamels. Just glad he left in time for the Phils bullpen to blow it. Even w/ bases loaded/no outs I make someone else beat me besides Ramirez.

Now they have a chance for the sweep. Only worried about the Moyer game. Damn lefties always scare me.

Lou was right to rip into the Cubs. They deserve it
Quote:
"We're playing like we're waiting to get beat," the Cubs manager said after Tuesday's 4-3 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals. "You don't have a big enough lead in September to play ball like that. Teams who play baseball like that invariably get caught, no matter how big the lead.

"You have to stay aggressive, you have to do the things you've done all year," said Piniella, whose voice was loud enough for the players to hear in the visitors' clubhouse at Busch Stadium -- and probably in Chicago, too. "We're not executing, we're making mistakes and we're getting beat. I'm getting tired of watching it, to be quite honest with you. That's not the way we played all year to get to where we are now."

Hopefully it's a good game for the Cubbies, not the Cards. Have you been to Wrigley this late in the year when the Cubs are contending? No place I'd rather be...
I've never been at a game much past August actually. And I would have been going to an earlier game if they hadn't all sold out before I could even buy my tickets.

I just keep hoping for good weather. I'd hate to drive all the way down to Chicago (I'm about 2 hours away) to sit in cold or have to deal with rain or something.
