Inside (original title: À l'intérieur)

Bloody hell, the Hellraiser remake will be ACES!

"Inside" is the international title of the french flick the directors Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury released in 2007, and it's INSANE. They use a simple plot (female stalker violently tries to get a pregnant woman's baby) with minimalistic devices (90% of the whole movie is set in a extremely dark house), add hardcore violence and create a gruesome atmosphere that is both nihilistic and thrilling.

The violent content is really hard. Most of the stuff reminds of Haute Tension (without a gimmick twist ending), and it's even more painful to watch what the pregnant woman has to endure. With all that red soup this could have easily been a distasteful splatterfest, but the quality of the actors and direction will convince you otherwise. For obvious reasons, if you're pregnant, DO NOT watch this. Even Irreversible is better suited than this.

For those who stand the worst on-screen violence to see the good flick it's part of, this is a clear recommendation. And now I can't wait to see what they gonna do with Hellraiser. Trust these guys.

Liked this one a lot. Too bad it's only getting a DVD release in North America (unless something has changed that I missed) since it's really a great audience film.

Great fucking movie.
Can't hardly wait for the dvd.

I've always considered myself a gorefiend, but this one... this was really too much. Be warned- it really is pretty fucked up, and I just couldn't take it.
Its coming out on DVD in April and will be unrated. I guess the Weinstien Company must have found it too intense for a wide release. Anyway, I'm still looking forward to seeing this, but I would have loved to have seen it on the big screen. I wonder how it compares to "Audition", which I saw in a theater six years ago and was one of the most insane experiances I ever had in a movie theater.
The Weinsteins never had plans for anything other than a DVD release, or so I was told by reps at the Toronto fest last year.

Awesome, sick fucking flick!

I saw this in a double header with the other upcoming french horror flick, Frontiers, and while that one was decent, Inside blows it away on every level (least of which is the more appropriate running time).

My wife's about a week away from being full term. Seeing her this morning creeped me out just a bit

No way in hell I'd ever make/let her watch this one though. Pregnant or not.

Looking forward to picking this up on DVD April 15th.

I watched this the other week with my mum, She was hesistant to
watch it due to the fact it's in a foreign language. Didn't tell her
anything about the plot either...to my surprise she took it well.

I on the other hand...yeah that was one fucked up film.

This releases on DVD tomorrow! Highly recommend you guys give it a watch! (I feel like a shill! This movie deserves it though.)

But don't try renting it at Blockbuster, they only have the R-rated version. I guess I have to go to Netflix or one of the retail chains (would Best Buy have the unrated version or would I have to go with FYE)?
I am guessing the Blockbuster Friendly release must run for all of 15 minutes... twats that they are.
Netflix=unrated.

Great film. Just watched it with my wife, and we're both freakin exhausted from the experience.

The thing that gets me...other than just how well it was put together and acted and whatnot...was the fact that the director just kept the camera on things for what seemed like (in this day of mtv cutting) an eternity. Someone else would have put thirty cuts in a sequence. In this one, the camera just seems to follow the action without blinking. THAT made it more brutal to me. That, and a lot of the really fucked up shit happened slowly.

I'm getting this fucking thing out of my house post haste. There is no way on earth I want it around with my kids in the house. "Brutal" isn't strong enough word for it.

Gaah, censorship pisses me off.
Nice gore but was it supposed to be a comedy? Once the Keystone Cops showed up I lost all interest. I only finished the damn thing on principal.
overall I really liked this, but yeah there was some stupid shit in it. cliched horror movie stuff like the characters doing stupid things to advance the plot/prolong the film. also arbitrary things like the seemingly brain damaged cop going nuts and attacking Sarah. I guess something like that could happen maybe (???), but it just seemed out of place, random, and a bit silly (although admittedly still unsettling). at least it led to more gore.

I got annoyed with that stuff a couple times, but otherwise I found it to be well done. as a hardcore fucked up gorefest it's fantastic. and frankly the illogical/dumb stuff kind of reminded me of old school Italian horror, so ultimately it didn't bother me that much. I guess I just wasn't initially expecting a horror movie that was "typical" in that sense. it was certainly not typical in terms of how fucked up and gory it was, and I will definitely recommend it to people.

I was expecting something along the lines of Misery or at the very least Guinea Pig: Flower of Flesh and Blood. Just some crazy chick torturing a pregnant lady. This was just dumb. It was good up until all the other people started showing up and being disposed of within a matter of minutes. I fast forwarded through most of it because everything was just so predictable.
You guys are wrong.

This is a stunning film.
Great gore, great atmosphere.
Scary, funny, horrific and awesomely nonsensical.

You should know great horror when you see it.
Loved it. Probably the most gory new release since...um...Braindead? That can't be right can it? I can recall gorier movies but no recently vintaged ones. France is becoming the Italy of the '70s and '80s in the '00s, between fun gore like this and Haute Tension, and genuine disturbing horror like Irreversible and In My Skin. I am for it.

Would make a great French preggo horror double feature with Baby Blood.

So you were expecting a psychological thriller with almost zero gore or an over the top mutilation-fest with absolutely no story or atmosphere? Andrew and Gabe got it exactly right, if people could recognize good horror, maybe we'd end up with less "Saws" and pointless remakes. Iit's not perfect, but I think this one definitely lives up to the hype. The last five minutes or so are the most beautifully shot sequences in any recent horror film. It's not all about the gore, it's in the presentation. The shot of the blood flowing down the stairs and the fade out on Béatrice Dalle are both amazing. First movie in a long while that I've watched two nights in a row.

yes yes yes YES

Just finished watching this; I don't think I'd have Brasky's set of big brass ones to watch this again tomorrow, but I did really enjoy it (though agree that some things don't quite work, the cop/comedy relief and the prisoner who goes brain-damaged psycho out of nowhere), probably because like Brasky said, it wasn't just that it was super gorey, but really well made and presented. The two shots he mentioned specifically I really thought were great and ended the movie on a beautifully grim note.

Though I never again want to see scissors being stabbed into a belly button (pregnant or not) for the rest of my fucking life. That was the most wince-inducing, painful to watch stuff for me. Even worse than achilles tendons being slashed for things that make me feel super uncomfortable.

Amen.

It might not be perfect (what horror film isn't with out some implausable bullshit?), but it worked for me. All of it. Even the cop handcuffing the hoodlum to his wrist - I didn't give it a second thought.

My brother sent this to me and I just got done watching it. Holy fuck. Once the shit hits the fan it doesn't stop hitting. Downright brutal in parts but surprisingly very suspenseful as well. Next stop: Amazon.com to buy it. Just too damn awesome.

20 years ago, when I first saw Betty Blue, I thought Beatrice Dalle was the hottest thing on two legs. After seeing this film, she's going to show up in my nightmares.

Jesus fucking Christ, what a brutal, riveting piece of work! I can't say that I enjoyed it, but it was just incredibly well made and effective. I seriously had to look away at the stairwell "climax". That was some hardcore shit.

I don't want these guys doing any remakes. I want them to keep doing originals, because they have the goods.

Not to worry as they keep getting "let go", according to the latest news on CC, Re: Halloween 2 remake. Be curious to know what's going on behind the scenes there but... whatever. I'd prefer to see something original out of them again.

I finally saw this last night. What's to say? It's not perfect. The inclusion of bumbling cops earns a few demerits (do cops in France actually tether offenders to their wrist? why does that seem like a good idea?). The remainder is pretty brilliant, however. As has been noted, the cinematography is absolutely amazing. I was particularly impressed with the scene where the main character lies on her couch while the stalker stands, watching her, in the darkened room beyond. I liked the way in which the stalker's appearance in that scene mimicked the photos snapped by the main character: shadowy and indistinct. Very, very cool. I also enjoyed the way in which the film made the fetus a distinct character in its own right. I felt the shots of the baby's reactions helped to heighten the tension in certain scenes and make the danger more, I don't know, immediate. Just a great piece of work.

I agree, Dalle was quite a looker way back then. But look, in "Betty Blue", she was playing a schizo who was also a head turner, which did make that movie a little freaky givin the subject matter. Now with "Inside", she winds up playing the most horrific female character in a foreign horror movie this side of Takashi Miike's "Audition". When you think of it, its a role she was born to make.

I think the tension dissipates a bit once things get going, and I question a handful of music cues and editing choices (never trust anyone with one name, especially an editor), but that's all small business because, as a whole, this film is FUCKING GREAT.

Haute Tension is nigh insulting bullshit and has no business congegrating in the same sentence as this film as I've seen it do in certain reviews, also, for reasons due to disappointment and general resentment, every couple of minutes I would mentally tell Bryan Bertino to go fuck himself because this is how it's done.
I think it's a solid little movie. No, I don't like the cops and the reasoning for all the craziness is suspect, but much of the rest is good.
Actually there is one other thing that bothers me, something I felt was unnecessary. The moment they didn't show the other accident victim it was obvious who it was, that's not a big deal, you don't have to be terribly clever to figure that out before Beatrice Dalle even shows her face. Playing on this coincidence, making Inside something of a revenge film, is something I wasn't too partial to.

The real life crimes that inspired Inside are scary because all of them (at least the ones I read about) are completely random. It's frightening enough on it's own that there are women out there who come out of the ether with such a savage and horrificly singular goal, that I don't think that intertwining the fates of these two women adds much of anything to the proceedings. Take that element out of the film, and you'd hardly miss it.

Just watched it.
It's an instant classic.
From moment to moment, this is one of the most brutal, tense, and gorelustful horror films I've seen in a long time. It gave me the creeps, and for that I'd recommend it to any horror film freak out there. Some of the film's lesser aspects have been covered in this thread already, so I won't bother to repeat them, besides to say that what does work is brilliant and what doesn't work is rather conventional. The flaws are what keep me from loving it.
I watched it again and my opinion improved a little. Still hate the cops but less so than the first time I watched it. It really took me out of the movie the first time.

Their need to use the most tired conventions of the genre really undermined in my eyes what was up to then a brilliant film. I still kind of like it for what it is, but it could have been one the great horror movies if it kept up the first half's quality. But once we were done with the secondary characters it picked up again.
This film got under my skin with little effort. This is what I expected out of Haute Tension, and like someone earlier said, I bought ALL of it. Even the cop who foolishly handcuffed the criminal to his arm. It was all well done.

I second the motion for these guys to do original stuff.
I just watched this for the first time last night. Considering the events in the news recently, my timing couldn't have been better for the creepiness to have full effect.

Incredibly gory (the background of the opening credits alone was pretty sick) with some great tense moments (I echo the love for the scene with the pregnant woman on the couch with the other woman fading into the shadows behind her), this movie is a modern gore classic.

I'm not sure I want to watch it again in the near future, but it definitely had its desired effect on me. I look forward to what ever these guys do next.

I loved the vague Tenebrae homage when the mother pulls the needle out of her neck and walks down the hallway.

Liked the film a lot more that I thought it would. I had the chance to see it in the cinema a few years back but I wasn't able to go. Decided to look into after liking Marytrs and seeing people recommend Inside in the thread.

I can see why people are recommending it instead of Martyrs because it definitely functions as a more traditional horror film than Martyrs and doesn't have the pretensions of Martyrs.

I understand the issues with the CGI Baby and the visitors but I don't share them. I get the functionality of them both and as such I can forgive the issues with how they're handled.

Beatrice Dalle is just astounding in the film, so utterly elegant and terrifiyng. It's an amazingly shot film anyways, the early scene with Sarah taking pictures through her window and the flashes illuminating the form of the attacker really made me sit up and take notice, but she seems to benefit the most from the style.

I also like how generally antagonistic Sarah it is to everyone around her. It actually gives her a sense of depth that you don't often get in horror movies.

Can't get over the composition in the movie, it's just astounding at times. Love the shot of the woman walking past the bathroom doorway as the police officer checks on Sarah.

Yeah I watched this awhile back as well because of the reputation it has around here and I wasn't dissapointed.

Its one of the best horror films i've seen of the last decade.
