Jessica Alba needs to keep her mouth shut

We lost the previous thread where Alba basically dissed Latinos everywhere saying that she hates being Spanish. Now she does a complete 180, but sounds just as ignorant. I love that she and Cash want to have a "brown" baby. Who says shit like that?

Responding to rumors that she cut loose from her Mexican heritage, she says, "I never said that. Cut loose from what? Why would I want to cut loose from the only family I know?" (Alba's father is Mexican-American, though both of his parents were born in California. Her mother is of Dutch and French descent.)

In the magazine, which hits stands Feb. 19, Alba says she initially struggled to be accepted as 'mainstream' in Hollywood. "I was always trying to figure out 'How the hell am I going to be mainstream? How are people going to accept me? When are they going to get a clue that I am American, that this is what America looks like – people like me who are mixed, have different blood, mixed with different ethnicities? When are the people who are hiring for these jobs and writing these screenplays going to realize that?'" Alba says.

"I always took pride in being Latina, it's something I always embraced," she adds. "But when I got shunned, it made me feel really bad, like maybe I'm not."

She says that now she loves her Latin features. "I like that I look different; I like having flavor. I think it's funny that women get their lips injected, butt implants – everyone wants to look like us now."

As an expectant mom, some of her assets are even more enhanced. "When you're pregnant, your breasts are engorged and your stomach is getting bigger by the second," she says. "But it's awesome. It's the best time ever."

I'm not defending Jessica Alba at all, but my answer to this would be: lots and lots of African- and Latin-Americans in Los Angeles use 'brown' as self referential, or in reference to people who are not Caucasian or Asian.

I think she's trying to sound 'down'.

Interesting. My wife, who is ethnically Filipino, refers to herself as "brown." We tell our children they're "golden." They have beautiful, near-golden skin.

In my group of friends, we have so many different ethnicities that we refer to ourselves as 'brown kids'. There's a Mexican (yours truly), a Greek, couple of Puerto Ricans, one guy from Chile, another from El Salvador, etc. We also have the Jew Crew, and the white guys & girls are minorities...

I don't think of it as an insult, but it's easy to see how others do. One girl once told her mom she was going out with the 'brown kids', and her mother was genuinely shocked to hear that come out of her mouth, until she realized that's what we called ourselves.

I think the latter part is correct. Her words ring false considering her past statements of wanting to homogenize herself.

No, she doesn't. Not really.

Also, yes Alba's an idiot. There's no denying that based on her statements. The comment though about having "brown" babies isn't all that bad since I've been hearing various Black and/or Latin women (especially light-skinned ones) say that they want to have "little brown babies" for a long time now (about 15 years).

This is why my wife hates the term "Latina", and she can't stand that "Latina" magazine at all. The articles are horrible, they're mostly in English but they use Spanish words once in a while to remind you this is the "Latina" magazine.

As for having "brown" babies ... I never hear this term used at all by people that come from Latin America.

Maybe it's a New York Latino thing. I've heard from other Latin women as well that the Latina Magazine is garbage. They've told me that it went to crap after it was bought out by the people that own Essence Magazine and a bunch of the original staff left/were let go.

The idea of taking pride in one's ethnicity, or not, eludes me. It's like being proud of the fact that the sun rose this morning. Be proud of something you had control over, a choice you made, something you did, heifer.

It's a little more complicated than that. As a black man, I'm proud of my African/African-American heritage for the struggles we have been through and the BS we've overcome, and for the culture we've introduced. Ask an Irish or Italian American and they'll also have a laundry list of cultural accomplishments they're proud of. She's not saying she's proud because she has brown skin and a "big" butt. She's proud because she carries herself like a woman of value in the face of an American society that often devalues the contributions of Latinos and other non-white ethnicities. It's like Alaskans taking pride in their self-sufficiency, Mainers (sp?) taking pride in their independence, or Conservatives taking pride in their...well, strange conservative notions.

Granted Alba has a long, documented history of self-image issues, a lot of which are due to her Latin heritage on her father's side. This isn't unusual among ethnic minorities in America. But she has the disadvantage of having that all play out in image-obsessed Hollywood and in the public eye. I don't doubt she still carries misgiving to this day. She may even love her Latin "flavor" one day and resent it the next. Unfortunately for her, she's been less than eloquent about it all, to say the least.

I used to know someone who went to highschool with her, and was in the grade below her. She said she was just an evil hateful person. At the time (back in 2002 or so) I doubted that, but the more I hear the more I wonder if that may be true
