Mario Kart Wii

Both IGN and 1up spent time with the game. Looks very nice with many tracks and options for play
post #2 of 101
The motorbike option is particularly interesting...anything to wash the foul taste of Double-Dash out of my mouth is good.
I have around a dozen Wii-owning friends, so 12-player online multiplayer is going to be a blast.
I felt the actual racing for Double Dash!! was great, but they really took a shit on the limited but super fun battle mode from Mario Kart 64. Hopefully they take a hint from Smash Bros. Brawl and include a level editor, especially for battle mode.

With Mii support, I doubt I'll ever play as a Nintendo character again. We'll see. Great inclusion, I was kind of hoping they'd throw that into Brawl as well.
Miis will populate the stands, too. That's cool.

Also, it's supposed to have the ability to let you know when your friends are online with the game, which is kind of a big deal for Nintendo, right?

You mean Acting Sensation Mayor Ted Levine will be supporting my race for the gold? Yes! If I see him holding a "Go Bowser!" sign I will cry.

I don't think I need another hunk of plastic sitting on my controller shelf but I know I'll pick this up anyway. Even when it's garbage I still love me some Mario Kart.
When is Mario Kart ever garbage? Super Circuit for the GBA bored me to tears but I wouldn't call it garbage.
I hope the track designs are more inspired than those in Double Dash. The fact that they're throwing in a bunch of "classic" tracks into the mix would sit better with me if they didn't appear to take up half the selection. What would be cool, though, is if they tossed in some classic battle maps. Return of Block Fort and Double Decker?

Yes please.

Online will still be bullshit I'm sure (no voice, no interaction of any kind) which makes it kind of a non-factor for me.

Of course, it's Mario Kart so I'll buy it.

That's the game I was thinking of. Didn't like it at all.

April 27. That's faster than I thought. This is going to come out the same week as GTA, and despite my love of all things Kart (that isn't Super Circuit), I'd rather pick up GTA.

Gamespot lists the release date as May 1st. hmmmm......
Counterprogramming, maybe? Thankfully my birthday is in May because GTA is definitely the priority.
My wife is cursing Double Dash right now, so the sooner MKWii comes out, the safer I'll be. We've finish everything but the 150cc Special Cup. Any hints from anyone out there on how to beat it? I can usually get 1st or 2nd on 3 of the 4 tracks, but then the Rainbow tracks just fucking destroys any hopes and dreams we had.
Watch some Double Dash vids on youtube, and boost as much as possible. And use Toad/Toadette and the Toad kart. Then prepare for the tedium of the All-Cup Tour...and Mirror Mode...

With the new kid in the house, I don't have time for anything as involved as GTA, so this will probably be my sporadic game of choice for May and June.

Official Site
Nintendo is doing a "Driving School Tour" across the US
Apr 4-6 San Diego
Apr 11-13 Las Vegas
Apr 18-20 Denver
Apr 24 Dallas
Apr 26-27 Houston
May 2-4 Chicago
May 8 Washington DC
May 10-11 Philadelphia
May 14-15 Boston
May 17-18 New Jersey

I love how they list a bunch of cities and then just "New Jersey"
This is annoying. I picked up a PS2 just for GTA3. I picked up a Gamecube for Mario Kart DD (and eventually RE4). I might just have to pick up a Wii for this. Does the little bastard come in black? I'd want it to match my other units.
Not yet, seems like they're going for the Apple aesthetic.
As terrible as it sounds, I think i'll have to wait then. My TV, stand, sound system and PS3 are all a wonderous glossy black.

It's a magnificent dust magnet.
Jesus, that's lame.
Well, I guess it doesn't matter what colour the console is as long as it works.

Oops. Sorry. That wasn't a jab at the 360 there.
Ugh. I've just seen the black one (which is apparently in release limbo) and the white one looks surprisingly better, especially the controllers which seem to lose some detail in black.
So this came out in England yesterday and I have to say it's not a disappointment at all. Despite no real interaction, the online mode works really well, there's no lag, and you get connected to other people within seconds. Some really good new track designs as well.

What control set up are you using? How is the steering wheel?

I've been using the Gamecube controller, which actually works better on the Wii than it did on the Gamecube. The weapons are mapped to the left trigger so your right thumb only needs to be on the accelerator.

The steering wheel is OK to begin with, but when you get on the later tracks you don't get a tight enough control for the corners. Also, firing items is a bit awkward with it.

When you lot get a hold of this, then my friend code is:

4210-4125-5294

If you add me then let me know so we can race.
I've been replaying most of the previous MK games in anticipation of this. Unfortunately, my N64's power supply self destructed, so I haven't played MK64 in a while. I never spent much time with the original either, but soon I'll have all the original MK tracks unlocked in MK:Super Circuit on the GBA.

I'll be going straight for the Gamecube controller for MK Wii. Using a wheel in the Mario Kart arcade game that Namco made was terrible.
I'm thinking of skipping this altogether and downloading MK64 on my Wii, unless reviews are stellar.

*edit- No free-for-all online battle mode is a crock.

I downloaded the MK64 the other day. I still love that game. It's what? Like 12 or 13 years old? And it's still as fun as ever. My buddy and I still play it regularly. It will always remain the best Mario Kart game ever.
Can't wait for this thread to turn into ten pages of friend codes.
Even if I don't buy the game(I may cave), I'll probably do the same thing I did with Smash Bros. to help ease the pain.
I would consider this to be the best Mario Kart, in fact. It's certainly a step up from DD and DS, mainly due to the excellent online.

In case you were wondering, it's out in Europe.

Totally agreed. And I'm so glad they got rid of two characters in a kart and character specific items.

Is Smash Bros. out in the UK yet?
It's online is mostly miss when you're playing with strangers, at least here in the States. The matches I've had with other Chewers have been great fun, but the code system and registration nonsense sucks most of the fun out of that, unless you schedule a time to play or something.
The reason I ask is, I'm confused as to why MK seems to have great online, and Smash can occasionally be a slide show of lag. Could be a distance issue here, I don't know.

Why not buy Mario Kart 64 off the Virtual Console?

I still don't think Super Mario Kart has been topped. That game was a giant vortex of time suck.

Smash Bros isn't out here yet. I don't know why the online works, but I've played against people in Japan with no problems. Maybe Nintendo spent more time on the online for Mario Kart?

For me, Mario Kart 64 topped Super Mario Kart. 4 player races and full 3d tracks do it for me everytime.
General impression I've got from american Brawl-owners does suggest rather more effort went into Mk's online.
Baffled on the lack of lag. I've been racing against people from germany and japan at the same time without problems.

Quick question:
Does this come in one of those evil damn sleeves like Wii Sports and Link's Crossbow Training? I noticed on IGN that the "box art" they've been showing is quite... square.

It comes with the wheel attachment, so my guess is yes.

Yeah, you get a Wii wheel. I'm not sure if they will be selling games separate from the wheel, but all the reviews I've read say it comes with the wheel.

A question that is important to me (which I have because of a tony 1-2 sentence snippet from a review I read) is:

Did they get rid of the ability to play through Grand Prix mode with 2-players playing at the same time?

If so, I'm pissed off.

My wife and I barely have time for games, so when we do play, we play together... if we have to play individually to unlock everything, that will be a pain in the ass and not much fun.

Can anyone confirm or deny this?

The actual game comes in a normal dvd-style case, which is in the square box with the wheel. You can't buy it separately, but it isn't more expensive than other games, so you wouldn't need to.

You can't do proper GP with two players unfortunately. You can do all of the tracks in each cup with AI and normal scoring, but I don't think you can unlock things in it.

That sucks. That was one of the cooler aspects of Double Dash!!.

how much of a pain is it to unlock using your Mii as a driver, and is it really worth it?
So, I got my copy and I have one question: do you have to unlock a second Rules menu like in Brawl? I can't, for the fucking life of me, change my controls so they match what is listed in the manual. According to the manual, when using the wheel attachment, "B" is the brake and the D-pad is used to toss items. However, when playing the game, "B" launches my damn item, and it's a pain in the ass to have to hit 1 and 2 to drift. I can't find an option menu to change this.

Anyone else have this problem, or am I just too damn drunk to figure it out?
I'm heading out to pick this up later, I'll make a point of messing with control options and see what I can find.

Other than that issue, what are your impressions so far? I think I'm in the minority having Double Dash be my favorite of the series, so I'm pretty optimistic based on the reviews.
Other than that (somewhat minor) control issue, I'm impressed with how challenging the racing is. The different type of vehicles bring to mind Diddy Kong Racing (no planes, though) but I have taken a liking to the motorbikes. EDIT: Two of the harder tracks I played were Wario's Gold Mine and Rainbow Road. Infuriating.

Last night we had people playing on the wheel, the Wii-mote, and the Gamecube controller and the consensus was that the GC controller was still the best, but that is probably due to unfamiliarity with the new peripheral.

Haven't tried online play yet, but from what I heard from the premature-balding kid at Gamecrazy, it is indeed much improved from SSBB.

Oh, and they are selling the wheels for $11.99, so that's cool.
Why not get MK64 on VC? Well, I don't have wireless set up at my house right now, and I'd feel like a chump paying again for a game I already own. I'll probably get it again anyways, though.

I'm at work right now, going to hit up the game store on the way home and get MK Wii. I may take my Wii over to my buddy's house, and use his wireless internet to conquer some of my friends across the country. I'll post my friend code later if I end up doing that.

If I just ordered the stupid LAN adapter for Wii I wouldn't have this problem.
Nabbed it this morning. Just booting it up now for a spin.

Here's my Mario Kart Wii code:

If I understand it correctly, it's related to whether you choose automatic or manual sliding. In automatic, the B button will also use your power up, but in manual B is the brake and D-Pad is your power up. Hope that helps.
The Wii wheel is actually quite fun. Right now it's a little too much for me to handle on the crazy later courses, though.

I tore through the GP quickly, got 1st in the 150cc Special cup on my 2nd try (using the GC controller, Baby Mario, standard kart). The reviewers bitching about the difficulty of 150cc are full of it.

I don't feel either way about the bikes right now, but I'll give them some Time Trial testing later.

What's the deal with online multiplayer on Wii? Do I have to pay for a service? I have wireless internet. I just don't have any games that work with it right now.
