To the people writing all the anti-Owen shit on the talkbacks. - Page 3

First of all, giving anything beyond some constructive criticism about the site's writers is selfish and in bad taste. SELFISH where you should be humble and appreciative for the overall incomparable quality and member perks of CHUD. Ever since CHUD first launched all those years ago, Nick and staff have dedicated a huge chunk of their time and energy building place that is infinitely more intelligent, hilarious, informed, and passionate than any film related site I've ever come across. And some of you bitches seems to forget that you get all of this FOR FREE*.

In the early days (and to some extent this is still the case), CHUD's personality is an extension of Nick Nunziata and that's always been one of the things I enjoy most about it**. The point that I'm making here is that we're guests in his house. So for the most part, after you've said your piece, I feel like it's time to shut the fuck up and love it or leave it. Seems to me Nick and the staff have moved from being aware about your Owen gripes to being fed up about it. I say all of this as someone who was also annoyed by Owen when he decided to briefly stir some shit with me in some thread last year. But as a grown person, I know the right thing to do is leave the past behind and just read the stuff on CHUD that interests me. If Owen happens to write an article that catches my attention, I'm certainly not going to avoid it because I think his grammar and people skills need work. If you aren't a fan of his writing, either give the guy time to grow or just avoid his articles. Is that really so hard to do?

**I've come to greatly enjoy and respect the input of the rest of the current staff as well. As for Owen, I'm not ready to form an opinion about his work yet because he's so new. But if I ultimately decide that his writing causes cancer of the cock, you won't see me making a big stink about it like I own this place.

My two cents: Owens writing isn't that bad. His articles can easily be ignored because most of the topics he writes about seem fairly obscure.

I don't have a problem with Owen's articles. Yes, they're not up to the standard of some writers on the site, but they're informative enough, and they're a lot better than, say half the trash spewed out of AICN. Devin's early writing wasn't noticeably better.

But since I did get dragged into it, and as my recent professional opinions on problems with the site and Creature Corner posts somehow have have been overlooked to where It's been interpreted that I've been "taken away", it should be clarified I've been in both locations for well over a year. So don't fret sweetheart...I wouldn't leave you without saying goodbye.

Oh, and while I've never left a main page comment, I've been entertained by the feedback that I assumed would have blowed over by now. Perhaps they are continuing because Owen's writing skills suck whale snot through a straw? Maybe.....

What would solve the problem is no talkbacks period. One of the reasons I made CHUD my go to movie-news/entertainment site was because there were no talkbacks. I thought having a message board eliminated a great deal of the bullshit that comes along with having talkbacks, which are an eye-sore in every way imaginable. I don't mind the new layout of the site, but the anonymous postings after every single article are bothersome not only for the ugly aesthetic they give the page, but also for the mean-spirited, unfunny, and just plain fucking retarded crap that gets written there. I'm sure the thought was that it would be good to give a voice to the "common folk" that stop by CHUD every once in awhile, but c'mon, I always thought of CHUD as above shit like that. Seriously, haven't talkbacks become an internet joke punchline?

And in regards to Owen's articles: they may not be the most well written pieces of journalism on the internet, but give the guy a chance. I'll echo Ryan's statement when I say give him time to grow a little bit before attacking each and every thing he does.

I hate that most of the activity on the boards is about meta such Owen etc. And I know I am contributing at this but I'm not so retentive to satart a new thread about this.

My thoughts exactly. I can understand the reasoning behind talkbacks, but I believe overall quality suffers for their inclusion. There's been a lot of talk of how Owen's writing & research skills are harming the quality of the main page, but the ugly talkback responses have cast a far worse impression - especially on casual CHUD readers who have little knowledge of (and even less interest in) the bad blood between Owen and other site regulars. Anonymous posts made to insultingly denounce one of a site's writers seems more akin to a bully picking on an easy target than legitimate concern over a site's welfare.

So, if no one talks about it on the talkbacks, the problem just goes away, right?

I agree with Pvt. Spunkmeyer and others about the talkbacks. A worthy experiment, but they've already yielded more cretin shitfinger drawings than worthy feedback and discussion.

Yupper. I haven't formed a big opinion on Owen's writing one way or the other as of yet, because he really is so new to it. But the talkbacks are just fuel for alot of dickheads who don't have the balls to sign up for the message board, which would possibly force them to stop acting like inbred gorillas. To me, the problem seems to be less Owen's writing abilities - which may improve, given time, and he ought to be given more of a chance than the whole whopping month that he's been doing it - and more to the talkbacks. They were an idea, to see if they'd create any kind of substantial discussion without having to sign up for the forums, but it seems they're just becoming asshole magnets. And the best way to keep people from abusing them is to not have them.

There was one particular CHUD writer a while back whose articles really grated on me. His sentence constructions were just painful to my eyes and even (I hate to admit) actually angered me at times. It got to the point where I literally could not read his articles, so I avoided his stuff, and when he wrote on a topic that interested me, I clicked on the link to the source of the news tidbit and got the info that way. If you're really jonesing for Kelsey Grammar and Zac Efron updates off of CHUD, just click on that source link and bypass whatever offends you. Let Nick and co. worry about the health of the site, because your bitching is doing as much if not more damage than Owen's articles ever could.

I really don't get the complaints about the talkbacks. Yes, people are going to make unfunny or douche-y comments (e.g. the abortion comments in regards to Owen), but welcome to the internet. It happens. Given that they're at the bottom of each article, they don't - in my opinion - add an 'ugly aesthetic' to the main page as they're very easy to ignore. I'd rather have people making useless commentary on the talkbacks than becoming members of the boards just to stir shit up.

Whatever happened to Owen? I haven't been on the boards much since this thread originally caught on fire (my wife and I were moving into our first house and we've been busy settling in), and I noticed that he's not writing articles anymore. Or is he, and I'm just missing them?

It was a wrong place at the wrong time deal. Real life was (and is) pretty stressful, and so I was having a hard time enjoying it. Plus, I had planned on quitting my job and moving to another than required fewer hours and had better pay, but things changed.

I don't regret it, though. I'm glad I was able to help out here, even if it was just for a few months.

Sorry to hear about the stress. I will admit that your writing was a little rough at first, but I thought you were finding your niche rather quickly. I was definitely hoping to see you come into your own as a CHUD writer.
