Leviathan (1989) - Page 2

Cool to see a thread for this - Leviathan was the first time a movie genuinely horrified me. I was 8 or 9 when I saw this on video, and the giant worm plunging into DeJesus's stomach gave me a few consecutive sleepless nights. It's definitely aged, and while I really dig the practical effects, the climactic battle(s) with the creature are pretty clunky. It's most effective when it stays small, with the aforementioned worm, or Daniel Stern's nasty boils and blisters.

There needs to be more movies like this. At the risk of sounding like an old fogey - they don't make 'em like this anymore. The Abyss is the better film, but both Leviathan and Deepstar Six have earned special places in my DVD collection. I want to second the love for Miguel Ferrer in Deepstar. A delightfully messy demise. I also get a kick out of Lloyd Braun from Seinfeld getting chomped in half.

All the actors in Leviathan all seem to be in on the joke that this is just a fun monster movie. which I dig. Just coming in having some fun for the day then they all have a nice diner at some Hollywood restaurant. Very old school.
I was disappointed with only getting a few money shots of the monster. It has a Predator/Monster Squad's Creature/Guyver Monsters look to it. Lots of those monsters seem to come from the same planet where black spots grow around your shoulders and chest. Same designer, I'm guessing.
The slimeballishness that Starn oozes is great.

Great, but...
I still think I like Deep Rising a bit more, though.

Almost. LEVIATHAN, PREDATOR, and MONSTER SQUAD are all Stan Winston, and THE GUYVER stuff is Steve Wang (who has worked with WInston).

This may be just bad blood from former proteges, but I remember reading about how Stan Winston, while very much part of design in the 70s, became more of an administrator and front man for his studio. He hired great artists, designers and engineers but Stan was more the face of the studio who would deal with the directors.
This was why Alec Gillis and Tom Woodruff left his studio to form they're own because they felt that Stan was taking credit for their work.

It seems a bit crappy to talk about that now that he has passed and this is way off topic so, I apologize if I offended anyone.
