Thought you guys might be excited to know that Bill has a new book coming out this fall, and it's a sequel to his smash hit NEW RULES: POLITE MUSINGS FROM A TIMID OBSERVER:

7af47be7.jpg

From bestselling author and host of HBO's Real Time, Bill Maher's new book of political riffs serves up a savagely funny set of rules for preserving sanity in an insane world.

A follow-up to the New York Times-bestselling New Rules, The New New Rules delivers a series of hilarious, intelligent rants on everything from same-sex marriage to health care, from Republican agendas to celebrity meltdowns, with all the razor-sharp insight that has made Bill Maher one of the most influential comedic voices shaping the political debate today. With another presidential campaign on the horizon and a stellar set of real-life characters to have fun with-"New Rule: If Charlie Sheen's home life means he can't have a TV show, then I say Newt Gingrich can't be president"-this enlightening and important book may be the best thing you pretend to read all year

He has been on fire this year, since REAL TIME finally abandoned it's normal "13 episodes and call it a season" strategy. Now he is on all year long, with only a brief summer break. He returns this next Friday

Bill is back!

This time he's teamed up with none other than Keith Olbermann in an effort to communicate with a typical republican voter:

I can't wait to get home and catch the latest NEW RULES on youtube. The start of a new season of REAL TIME with Bill Maher.. is there anything better? Now I know that until Bill's next break, I can make it through my week knowing I'm not the only person out there passionately pissed off by the state of things

Aging and getting old... scary stuff. I am glad to see Bill is able to handle his mortality with class. In my book, he'll always be one of the immortals

Quote:
Bill Maher pointed out what he believed were the stark differences between Occupy Wall Street protesters and Tea Partiers on "The Rachel Maddow Show" Tuesday night. Maddow and Maher discussed Occupy Wall Street's "Millionaires March" visiting Rupert Murdoch's home, the gaining traction of the demonstration, and attempted to recall the origins of the Tea Party.

Maddow asked Maher if he believed Occupy Wall Street's message resonated with people who did not participate in the protests. "Absolutely,:" Maher responded. "This is a great thing...so what if their message is a little vague. I like if they're a little vague."

Maddow turned the conversation to the "sense of dangerousness" among the Occupy Wall Street Protesters. Maddow examined the Republican response to the protesters on her show Monday night, and ran clips of statements made by Reps. Paul Ryan and Eric Cantor. Maddow revisited this topic with Maher, and said, "I was thinking about that as we see Eric Cantor and these other Republican Congressmen denouncing the Occupy Wall Street people as, you know, an angry mob and somehow dangerous to the country. I wonder if a sense of dangerousness is what gives them power."

"Well, yeah, I think so," Maher responded. He said that he was reminded of a scene in the Martin Scorcese film "Gangs Of New York" in which a brick is thrown through a rich person's window. "If a brick came through Rupert Murdoch’s apartment, yes, I have a feeling Fox News would be a lot more gentle on the Wall Street people." Maher also said he thinks Occupy Wall Street is "the opposite" of the Tea Party movement because the latter was steered into mainstream Republican politics.

Maher then described his analysis of the evolution of the Republican party voters and compared it to a strain of viruses. "Every time it comes back, it comes back a little stronger and more dangerous," he said

In response to fan demand, Bill will now be weighing in throughout the week on the REAL TIME BLOG with brief thoughts on the news of the moment!

I neglected to report this back when it happened in March, but Bill and long time girlfriend Cara Santa Maria have split amiably, according to inside sources. They remain friends!

PS: Last but not least I thought throughout the season I'd share with you a few of the wonderful propaganda posters Bill commissioned for his VICTORY BEGINS AT HOME TOUR:

Haha, when I watched Bill on TRMS earlier this week, I couldn't help but notice that it despite having decided to bring Bill back for another segment after the initial 7 minute interview (an unplanned move), the dialog did appear to end quickly when Mr Maher began to make some pointed comments about religion. Bill is fearless, but if you check the video above, I do wonder if Rachel had producers whispering in her ear right as things suddenly wrap up. It's interesting footage

I bring it up because I recently saw this update from Bill that perhaps hints at just such an occurrence

In other news... Maher stands with OCCUPY, and is currently in DC:

Check it:

Thats right.. None other than Rachel Maddow of THE RACHEL MADDOW SHOW will tonight be back on Bill's panel! Whatever tensions may or may not have existed between the two after his interview the other week, they seem to have evaporated. Rachel is always incredible, and she's a delightful presence on the show IMHO. She doesn't let anyone talk down to her, and she laughs hysterically at Bill's politically incorrect jokes. What more could you ask for?

PS! No HBO? No worries! Tune in LIVE @11 EST for OVERTIME, Bill's special post show broadcast where he takes questions from the Internet. Only on HBO.com!

Bill's been on a roll this year, I wouldn't be surprised to see him adopt a take no BS attitude towards that creep

PS as for kicking Norquist's butt, remember that Bill isn't afraid to get physical if the situation calls for it!

If you guys are not watching OVERTIME, you should be. Every once in a while you catch LIVE moments of craziness that reveal fascinating behind the scenes stuff. Bill cussing out guests, angry looks, ETC. I've rarely seen something like tonight though. Michael Ware of CNN is a well known bad ass, but tonight he must have been drinking or something because he was totally out of it. Gesticulating wildly, laughing, interupting Bill three times when Bill tried to do his LIVE BONUS NEW RULE. He clutched at Cornel West, lit up a cigarette, walked off, came back. I've got some screen shots for you here now:

Bill has stated that he sometimes smokes up guests before the show, and there have been guests who've gotten drunk on air before. But usually it's Hitchens and he can hold his booze. Bill concluded by saying "good night, it's time for the panel to go get high"

Then, there was an odd scuffle for 4 seconds when stage hands came up to grasp at Michael Ware, or something. I'll post the video tomorrow as soon as it's up

I look forward to a chance to catch the show that came before OVERTIME. Was Ware like that the whole night? I can't wait to find out!

BONUS INFO

Bill gives one of his most scathing indictments of religion yet, argues at length with West and others over drugs and Mormons, and more!

OMG... Just watched clips from last nights RTwBM and it was off the wall. Ware basically ruined Bill's flow, and NEW RULES was full of bickering with the panel, and angry glares. After a time sensitive google search for "Michael ware drunk bill maher", I saw the entire episode being described by a poster on another board as "bizarre"

Definitely a classic and must see episode. I will post extended impressions tomorrow.. But for now:

df40f347.jpg

Watch clips on HBO.com or wait for the iTunes only PODCAST on Wednesday!

PS West did sit there scolding Bill for his jokes, which Bill never appreciates. It turns the audience against him, and as he stated on a previous episode where that happened, "your time is over, it's my time to talk now"

Sadly Dr West didn't follow this edict

Me too.  Mathews was a good guest.  It was a good mix of people, which made up for the past two weeks of bad mixes.  I hate when his show goes on hiaitus.  But there is some kind of silver lining.  He went on The View to push his book and ended up sitting next to Elizabeth Hasselbeck.

After the group began to talk politics, Hasselbeck sarcastically said to Maher, “Wow, I actually feel smarter sitting next to you.”

To which he replied, “Really? I feel like I’m in high school sitting next to you.”

Heh, I love it! Thanks for the clip. Hasslebeck gets on Bill about a joke he was telling. She repeats it - the audience LAUGHS- and then she sits there and says "you can't tell me I'm wrong for saying that's not funny"

Priceless

A great new blog from Bill is up on HUFFPO:

Quote:

On the inevitable occasion of the Huffington Post's entrée into television, it behooves me to say a few words about the business, and occasional art, of television. Because if HuffPost's getting into TV, really, how much longer before Arianna takes that over and I'm working for her full-time? Five years? Ten years? I feel like France in 1936.

I've seen a lot of change in the time I've been doing television -- when Politically Incorrect went on in 1993, we were still in a much more innocent time technologically -- not many of us had cellphones yet, and we still rented moves at Blockbuster, found out what movies were playing by looking in the newspaper, which we used to get and read; we were still taking disc players to listen to music on the airplane, with individual CDs. Skype was in science fiction movies. iPod wasn't even in science fiction movies.

And yet, TV endures. People are watching more TV than ever -- you just never know what people want to cling to. Movies, too. No matter what comes out, we are still humans who need reasons to get out of the house and do something. All the syrupy drama about sitting in the dark -- yeah, once in a while, but mostly it's about doing something on a date where you don't have to talk. And TV? Obviously, people want to get something from this thing that isn't on a computer at all. TV is better for when you're doing something else, like ironing or packing or cooking -- mostly when I watch TV, I'm doing something else. Or I watch it in bed, and I don't like electronic devices in bed. I like one electronic device in bed, a nice big phat TV at the end of it.

I've seen TV get dirtier, and I've also helped. I was the first person to say "sucks" on TV -- in 1983 I did a joke during my fourth or fifth appearance on Carson during my little six-minute -- that meant six minutes, not seven and not five -- monologue spot (I had yet to be invited on the couch), and I said, as a punch line to a joke I no longer remember, "the airport sucks." And they were all upset about it after the show, but for some reason they didn't bleep it, and then three nights later I saw Carson say "sucks" in a joke about the premier of the Soviet Union! Ah, Cold War memories.

A guy who really helped me get into television was Steve Allen. When I was making my first appearances on TV in 1982 he talked me up and used me in anything he could. I loved him -- exact same guy on and off the air. There was no getting to know him deeply, but who cares, he was funny, nice, helpful, humble, welcoming, genuine -- don't be greedy. And he was a bit of a square and a prude; or maybe he was just from a different era, when men wore hats and ties to baseball games, and people didn't say "ballsweat" on broadcast television. I remember -- and still have -- a letter he wrote me when I was doing Politically Incorrect -- complaining about what a potty mouth I am. I am, Steve, and I'm sorry. It makes me giggle.

I love talking television trends with my friend Jim Vallely, half the genius behind Arrested Development -- he's unbelievably savvy about seeing what's ahead. I, not so much. For example, I would have bet money that Leno at 10 would work. And when I'm wrong like that, it's a great teaching moment for me. When America went, "No, we want a high production value 10 o'clock drama. We are adults, we work hard all day, now the kids are in bed, we deserve something with kissing and explosions filmed in Panavision." Just like in politics: people complain about the product, but they get the product they deserve. People say there's not enough innovation, but when NBC tried it, they got their head handed to them. It'll be 50 years before these guys put on anything but procedural cop shows and vampires. (Idea: vampires who are procedural detectives -- let's see who runs with it...)

TV helps my mood: I think it does for many people. That's why people leave it on all day. It's a box full of good memories.

Poverty.  Bill Maher's New Rules this week focused on how knowledge is the "forbidden fruit" to Fundamentalists but I think he missed an opportunity to talk about poverty, which Alexandra Pelosi's short really laid bare.  Poverty breeds lack of education, superstition and faith supplanting reason -- not religious faith but faith in "their side."  One of the people she interviewed really hammered home how thoroughly the poor are being used by the rich to attain power and thereby get richer and exploit the poor even more.  It is tragic, and the answer really is broadening social programs to help people come back from living so hard on the edge, which they talked about in the panel.  I thought it was a good show.

Social programs those people would dismiss as socialism and government handouts.  And so the cycle continues.
