My usual musical routine involves going to a couple different review sites (mainly popmatters) and reading all their review to catch anything that sounds interesting to me. Then when I do, I try to explore the genre /artist that I connected with. This usually serves me well, getting me to discover Cheb i Sabbah, Common, Meshuggah, and a lot of others. Usually it's relatively easy to explore after I find something, but I'm kinda stumped here.
The band whose genre I want to explore is maybe too obscure to people here, I don't know. The Legendary Shack Shakers. The album I have is Swampblood, though I'm buying all the others I can find.
My problem is that living in central europe there's quite a dearth of genuine Americana to be found. I don't even have the frame of reference to describe what this is or why I like it. It sounds like blues, it's VERY "southern", rock, bluegrass, dirty guitars, harmonica, a whiff of Louisiana I guess, and a metric fuckton of energy. Some people call them rockabilly, but unless I don't know that genre (possible, as only a small sampling of it reaches here) I wouldn't describe them like that. Here's an EPK video that has some of their music as background. http://youtube.com/watch?v=DV0GCwoDu2Q
So, can you help me with recommendations, or at least some knowledge to keep exploring this genre more?
Cheers
