Brunswick stew, when done right, is one of life's joys.

And yeah, it looks like a bowl of technicolor yawn.

The Carrot Tree in Yorktown, VA = the best Brunswick Stew you will ever taste. Or, it did when I was there about 3 years ago. Great, great stuff.

Smithfield's BBQ in the central NC area has great Brunswick stew as well.

Brunswick stew is one of the treasures of the South that I have yet to learn to love. I'll eat it, but I always feel like it's just a day away from becoming slop. Neaux--you got any Triangle area recommendations?

It's a barbecue side dish. The ingredients include the following:

1. Corn
2. Brown
3. Unidentifiable

You put Tabasco sauce in it. Also, you use bread to soak it up. It can be wonderful.

I would never go to a restaurant and order brunswick stew.

If you are going to eat it, you either make it yourself or go to your local church brunswick stew event. Church abidin' folk know how to make a pot of stew. I might not be one of them, but I appreciate their cooking.

I guess that I'll never get a taste for it. I'm not a church going guy, and the thought of rodents and corn simmering in a pot makes me want to race for the Mason-Dixon line.

The man has a point.

Sorry Nid, don't know of anyplace I'd recommend in Durham.

According to Wikipedia:

Quote:
Recipes for Brunswick stew vary greatly but it is usually a tomato-based stew containing various types of lima beans/butter beans, corn, okra, and other vegetables, and one or more types of meat. Most recipes claiming authenticity call for squirrel or rabbit meat, but chicken, pork, and beef are also common ingredients. Some versions have a distinctly smoky taste.

The stew essentially resembles a very thick vegetable soup with meat. The key distinguishing factor between soup and Brunswick stew is the consistency. Brunswick stew must be thick; otherwise, it would be vegetable soup with meat added. Most variations have more meat and vegetables than liquid.

The main difference between the Georgia and Virginia versions have been the types of meat used. The Virginia version tends to favor chicken as the primary meat, while the Georgia version tends to favor pork and beef. As there is no "official" recipe for Brunswick stew, it is possible to find chicken, pork, beef, and other types of meat included in the same recipe.
I had never heard of the stuff. When I read the thread title, I was wondering why this thread wasn't in the Sex Forum.

Guess the bbq in the rest of the South just isn't puttin' out quality meat if they have to go ruinin' the plate with high-falutin' side items like BRRUUUUNSSSWICK stew.

Shooooot.

Come to Texas where we'll throw a pound of smoked briskit on a paper plate and give you a slice of bread to use as a napkin.

I always hear about how this is a Southern dish, but I've never had it, don't know anyone that makes it, and can't tell you anyone that lives in Louisiana that eats it.

I guess it's more of a Southeastern/Upland South thing.

Brunswick Stew won't be found in Louisiana because it doesn't have eyes and is not still alive.

Hey-O!

Try Bullock's BBQ in Durham. I haven't had theirs (I'm a recent convert) but based on their bbq and fried chicken, I'd expect it to be good.

Not as good as the church ones of course, but it will hold you over until the next fundraiser.
