Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots - Page 3

How is it sad? Did you watch the trailer? With the rest of the game lookings so good, his hair animation looks like it came from a PS1 game. Why give him hair like that if you can't make it move in a way that doesn't seem sub-par in relation to the rest of the game.

And I didn't HAVE to complain about the hair animation, I just chose to. I haven't played the game (since these are previews and it's not out yet) so I'm just saying things about the VIDEOS that I think hurt the overall presentation. If you look at my post, the hair thing was a little addendum to the fact that the game AGAIN looked like it put to much into the cinematics and not enough into gameplay.

Yeah but the only way a user could be involved ina fight like that would be through Quick Time Events (ala the knife fight in RE4).

Cut sceens aside, there are heaps of options to do cool stuff in the game play. Snake-eater in particular.
- distract guards wiht pornos
- walk through a swamp with your shirt off carrying a big machine gun
- burn off the leeches from the aforementioned swamp with a cigar
- ride through an exploding base in a side car shooting the crap out of guards
- eat 3 day old bats and make yourself sick

For me the fun is being presented an environment and a bunch of weapons, tools and abilities and experimenting with how to make it through. That's a whole lot more fun than a little bit of interaction in a kung-fu fight (that plenty of other games do already).

And the story is pretty stupid, but as long as it doesn't interfere with the gameplay too much (too many codec conversations in MGS2) I enjoy the over the top nature.

You'll have to forgive me, as I've never played any Metal Gear game other than the original NES side-scroller, but are the games supposed to be taking place in any sort of realistic version of our world? That fight scene was straight up ridiculous.

Also, the exposition is in full on blather mode.

From what i've played, it's basically a real version of our world - as the Japanese view it. Hence the oddities.

Yeah, they could use that stuff to armor humvees in Afghanistan. It's virtually impenetrable.

This is a game that features cyborgs, biomechanical dino-tanks, and at least one vampire. Complaining about the plausibility of the fight seems to miss the point.

Still pumped.

There's a point? Really?
So I've honestly played every game in this fucking series and I still don't know what's going on most of the time. So it was pretty sweet to get that pre-order dvd that laid out the entire story for me.

How I wish this was an American game though, maybe the story would actually make some sense.

Even with my gripes, I still always have a blast playing these and I can't wait for the beta for online. Good stuff.

Well, that's what I'm getting at: is the tone of the game supposed to be at all plausible? Because if that's what they're going for, that trailer was completely absurd.

But, if the Metal Gear games have abandoned any pretense of reality, then carry on with the vampires and matrix fight scenes.

Splinter Cell?
I guess.

Although I hated Splinter Cell. But that does make sense.

It has it's own very silly and ridiculous world. But it's often a very detailed world with interesting quirks and things that can be done.

For instance, in Snake-eater you fall into a cave. The moment you get down there it's very dark, but after a while, your eyes adjust to the darkness and becomes easier to see. The screen actually becomes brighter to represent this. So that's a fairly realistic and interesting thing to put in the game.

However, the reason you fell in the cave was because you were attacked by a man who can control wasps with his mind. And that's plain ridiculous.

The Metal Gear games, I'm beginning to suspect, are very different from what I thought they were like (basically a souped up Splinter Cell with futuristic villains). And not in a good way.

That's fair enough, but I'd rent MGS3 if you haven't played it. Although it might not be for you, it's one of the highest regarded PS2 games and worth taking a chance on.
Yeah, MGS is far more wacky that Splinter Cell. There's also a character in MGS2 who you can't shoot because she has good luck. Seriously.

I need to get a bluetooth headset for my PS3 and this one looks like it might fit the bill. It's a little more expensive that I'd like but I suppose the guaranteed compatibility makes up for it.

The first 2 PS2 games had some "futuristic" elements to them, but they were sort of present day based. The 3rd game was set in the past (60s?) and the current on is indeed futuristic.

The story in MGS has never been about realism.

If you hadn't added the "seriously", I would have asked.

Well, in defense of MGS2, she perceives it to be (bad) luck. It's revealed to actually be some sort of electromagnetic force that surrounds her body. Ocelot disables it and shoots her later in the game. But yeah Overlord, the world Metal Gear inhabits is not really reality based.
Shoot, that's right. I knew she died but couldn't remember how.
She picked up a tails-up penny.
The Metal Gear games are weird in that for the most part, they treat the ridiculous world they take place in very, very seriously... and then suddenly the game will break the fourth wall and acknowledge its own video game logic. Like in Metal Gear Solid 2 when Snake mentions -- in a cutscene! -- that the bandana he's wearing is a powerup that gives him infinite ammo. Or in MGS1 when Psycho Mantis peeks into your memory card and tells you what he thinks about the games you like to play. It's a silly series, but on a certain level it knows it's silly and pokes fun at itself.

To do that, he needs to analyze the nanomachines' structure and find out how they communicate with one another. The nanomachines currently in use by militaries and PMCs are third generation, but their design is derived of that from the first generation.

...First Generation?!
Oh Metal Gear, how I've missed you.
The Metal Gear series is a silly franchise but that hasn't stopped me from loving the hell out of them. It tops Splinter Cell in my opinion.

Konami is giving away beta codes for Metal Gear Online without having to preorder the game, if anyone is interested. There's some Metal Gear Online info on the Playstation Blog as well.
We should definitely try to start a CHUD party if we can when the beta hits to hold us over until GTA IV hits. I know I'll be playing the beta until then. Well, it depends on how many maps will be available for the beta.
Bah, I got kicked out of the Japanese MGO beta. I guess I'll have to download the UK one this weekend instead.

The beta is available for download now if you have your code. I'm downloading it right now.
I can download the Beta, but apparently not the 1.01 update. Neither HTTP nor P2P seem to work.
I'll be heading home in a bit to download this, what 1.01 update are you refering to?

That doesn't surprise me. When I downloaded the update yesterday, it took a while for the P2P option to actually start downloading, but it did after a couple minutes. The update took about 2 hours to download. The update is a little bigger than the original beta download so it will take a while to download. You'll also have to sign up for some sort of Konami ID and Game ID after but the website is down. Konami is really fucking this up.
Yep. Took me forever to download the beta and update. Did the P2P thing though. And after all of that, couldn't make a Konami ID. Oh, Konami, please don't fuck this up. The PS3 can't take it. Haha.
Fuck the update. I think i'll leave it a few days. The only reason I downloaded the thing was because it's free - even when I buy MGS4 I know I won't go online with it outside of curiosity.

Still, odd to see Portable Ops' menu theme coming back for the online mode.
I honestly can't wait to play this online. The trailers I've seen and the articles I read make it sound pretty fun actually. Not like a system seller, but a fun little diversion if it runs right.

Here's what the MSG creator has to say about his game (from Kotaku). Hint, he's disappointed:

Quote:
Looks like Kojima Jr. isn't the only one disappointed with Metal Gear Solid. The latest issue of the UK's Edge magazine contains an interview with Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima, who expresses disappointment with the latest game in the series, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. It isn't so much the gameplay itself as it is the graphics.

"Game-wise, it's pretty close to the original vision: you sneak into the battlefield and can choose whether to do a stealth game or interfere with the battle more directly. But the graphic, side things like motion-blending and the size of the map, totally was not accomplished to my original vision - to my satisfaction.

Now Kojima is a well-known perfectionist, but it is a bit disturbing to see him voice his dissatisfaction with what is supposed to be the masterpiece of the franchise. So where does he lay the blame for not fully realizing his vision?

"When we first showed the game engine at TGS, the staff were really proud and happy. PS3 was a dream machine, y'know, and we were going to work on this and that - and we had so many ideas. But when we actually started developing the game, we realized there were a lot of restrictions and so it turned out how you see it today. The original vision was to go ten steps further, the reality was just one step, which isn't to say we didn't progress. So there was certainly progress made, but not enough progress...or more specifically, not enough power for progress. Apparently the team overestimated what the PlayStation 3 was capable of. I remember saying three years ago that we wanted to create something revolutionary, but in reality we couldn't really do that because of the CPU. We're using the Cell engine to its limit., actually. Please don't get me wrong, I'm not criticizing the PS3 machine, it's just that we weren't really aware of what the full-spec PS3 offered - we were creating something we couldn't entirely see.

Well there you have it, straight from the man himself. Metal Gear Solid 4 is not revolutionary.

How exactly does being disappointed that the finished game isn't exactly 100% like he envisioned at the start equates being disappointed with the game as a whole ?

This whole article is just trying to spin a fairly innocuous comment (taken out of context one should add, as the Edge preview it appears on has an overall positive vibe). Sides, a little humility from a game creator should be fairly appreciated. Lord knows we don't need more Molyneuxs in this industry.

He's been dissapointed with all of the games at one point. And yet they still are a blast to play. Not too worried. More worried about Konami's shitty servers.

Exactly. Still, it'll be quoted out of context by 360 fanboys until release. Then when it's amazing, they'll either say they don't want it, or will wait for the inevitable port.

It's becoming tiresome.

Seems to have worked. Ta Overlord!

EDIT: Anyone got the download for the patch yet? I left mine on overnight with P2P - this morning it'd been running for a good 10 hours and stopped at around 80%, citing no more sources. I can't really leave the bugger on all day waiting for someone else to download it, but obviously I don't want to have to sit through this again...

Still, this early release of the beta smacks of Konami knowing they'd have download issues.

So has anyone setup their Konami ID? I went online via my home computer, not my PS3, but when I get to the page to enter your Konami ID, Game ID, etc.., it keeps bringing it back to the same page informing me how to correctly input said ID's. But I'm following everything it's telling me to do. Anyone else having problems with this?

I signed up a couple days ago and I had problems then. A quick browse on a couple forums and people are still having problems signing up for their Konami IDs and had to just keep trying. They mention to make sure your Game ID password is all numbers since for some reason it doesn't allow letters for that particular password.
Sweet! Finally got the Konami ID shit going. So my next question is, will the beta be available after midnight tonight?
Thread Starter
It went up in Japan and Europe at that time from what I read so I suppose the North American servers could be live at midnight est. Problem is, people are having major problems logging into the game in Europe and Japan. On NeoGAF they are saying that when they finally are able to log in, they get kicked back out when they try to start a game.

Saw this on NeoGAF.
According to Kotaku, the beta has been postponed and will run until May 11th to make up for it. They were not ready for the level of traffic that hit the servers. You'd think they'd have planned for this. Apparently not.

Go Konami.

*facepalm*
Think how much worse it could have been with an open US beta.

Actually, I guess "not working" is as bad as it gets.
I was getting chastized at a different board because I was bitching a bit about this. I was getting the whole: "That's what beta is you dumbfuck!!11!"

My point was you'd think for a high profile game like this, that they would have had the servers properly configured and ready to go. I've been in plenty of beta's ranging from back in the EQ days and even with issues, the servers mostly worked. At least on the main day it was supposed to happen. I'm not pissed, just annoyed. But hey, at least they extended the beta by 5 days. Right?!
Same thing happened for Halo 3, remember? People went buck.
