I'm amazed, actually, that I've taken so little shit in the comments there so far, but the review just went up a few hours ago. I got slammed much more for my PENNY ARCADE review.

Yes on the ending -- I feel like everyone else did when talking about RETURN OF THE KING.

Nice review Russ. The fanboys have nothing to bitch about.

Excellent review as always, Russ.

Going through the game a second time it's really cemented the cinematic and overall story parts of this series as my ultimate guilty pleasure. I know that they just bloat the game and are often far, far too convoluted for their own good but I can't help but be sucked in by it all.

Haha, Bettenhausen has his head so far up Sony's ass that he's actually formed some kind of Alien hybrid thing with Kaz Hirai where Shane is the inner jaw. I'll never forget the bit from a couple years ago when Phil Harrison said, "no one will ever tap the full potential of the PS3", and Shane's reaction was, "Preach it, Brother Phil."

Hell, i'm an MGS fan and even I know 4 isn't perfection.

I think we're yet to experience the perfect game this generation.

I'd agree Bees?!, but MGS4 certainly isn't slacking in that department. It's the one depressing thing I can say about it, is that when it works, it fucking works, but when it doesn't, it's painful. It has tons of seen potential, but you know it could be more. I love it, but I'm not above pointing out its flaws (some wonky controls, 'eh' shooter sections).

Question: anyone else wish that for once when someone puts a gun in his mouth and the camera pulls up and we hear the gunshot, that they would have the balls to, you know, actually kill the guy?
I mean, I get that it's a nice dramatic touch, but come on, it's so overused these days that there's not a moment where you think he actually did what they want you to think he did.

It really was frustrating that
Snake didn't die. I mean, I had basically built myself up to accept that as his fate for the entire game. I was almost disappointed, you might say, simply because I was hoping Kojima really would have the balls to close out the character like that. Plus, it would have almost been a noble death for him, one last sacrifice for the world that almost no one will ever recognize. It would have at least made the epilogue stuff easier to pass off as just post-mortem delirium.
Started a online game on the EVA server. Should be up for the rest of the evening whether I am in the game or not so feel free to join up. The game name is The Batcave.

How is the online game, in your opinion? I've barely been on my PS3 lately, and my brother in law has it right now, playing MGS4 single player. Hopefully I'll get to MGS4 soon enough myself and I'll be back to getting online as well.

I've been playing it online. I'm not very good, but there's never been any lag. Since no one really communicates with each other, it's basically a free for all. Also, Head shots= instant death and they level up your skill quicker.

"Perfect", in a philosophical sense, is an unachievable ideal. For me, when discussing reviews of movies/video games, I have always defined it thusly: "The highest possible quality a reasonable person could expect from a game of that type at the time of its release."

Under that standard, I would say there has been one "perfect" game produced this generation: Portal. Which is ironic, considering it cost 5-10 bucks (if you prorate the cost of The Orange Box) and wasn't even the focus of its own release.

Whilst I agree obviously the philosophical perfect game may not exist - certainly the highest standard for that generation is the bar - Sonic, Mario, Goldeneye, Metal Gear Solid, Halo & God of War - are those games. Like them or not, they defined the respective generation of console they were on.

Portal doesn't count, since it's not this generation's game - and It's a PC title, ported. It's certainly fantastic, i'll grant it that though. PC's beyond generations now. Editions of DirectX perhaps.

It's just sad that the top devs for all sides are working on sequels. I want to see something like Shadow of the Colossus or Grim Fandango. Something so fucking good i'll want to play it constantly, but be more than just button pressing. Something compelling.

Fingers crossed. I think LBP will be the one to do it, but it's got so long to go...

Well, I enjoyed the online in MGS3 Subsistence and this feels like an improvement over it control wise so I enjoy it a lot. My enjoyment is partly due to enjoying all the little MGS type touches the online game has, as well, so I'm biased in my opinion. Headshots are a must if you want to be any good at the game, although, if you can avoid being headshot, it takes quite a bit of rounds to kill you. Objectively, CoD4 is a great online game, it's faster, the perk and xp system is awsome, and weapon customization is great. MGS4 is slower, more methodical game, with its quirks. You may enjoy it, but it's definitely not a mainstream online multiplayer game.

Performance wise, I haven't experienced much lag but I have been disconnected a few times, although that could have been on my end, I get that on CoD4 and Warhawk too. There are 3 servers dedicated to beginners so you can play with the newbies to start out. It also has matchmaking, but I haven't used that yet since the beta, I've been in the newbie servers and hosting my own games. I do hate the idiotic Konami ID/Game ID system so you can buy additional content from their "in-game store". Right now, you can purchase 3 additional character slots for $7 which basically lets you create more characters that look differently. It's fucking ridiculous. Konami is definitely going to try to nickel and dime everyone for things that probably should have been included in the game.

We seem to have different definitions of generations. Games produced for PCs, PS3s, and 360s simultaneously qualify as "this generation", for me at least

Whether a game is ported or not is irrelevant.
How does PC gaming belong in a generation? There's no hardware limitations or consistancies beyond DirectX - and even that's a choice now.

What was the last generation of PC gaming? Is that stuff before the 360 was released?

The ending of this game makes Return of the King's seem brief. Why wont it end!!!?!?!?

By the time you finish watching them, MGS5 should be out.

Or in-game XMB, so you'll get to have a lovely Firmware Upgrade again. No online play until you sit through the annoying update process, hooray!

The comments floating around the internet about the story eliciting tears are baffling. Good, deep gameplay, almost killed by hours and hours of anime nonsense. Russ' review is spot on.

Guy who hangs out with a monkey in a speedo: "When you shot [insert female bondage boss villian with post traumatic stress here] a bunch of times, YOU SET HER FREE. You should be proud, Snake."

Snake: "EhhhhhhhHnnnnnnnnUhhhhhhhh"
*coughs*

I enjoyed playing the actual game, though.

Snake having bowel movements would have weakened one of MGS IV's breakout characters. There's a guy in the game who gets nervous and shits in his pants a lot. And HAHAHAHAH THERE'S A BROWN STAIN ON HIS PANTS!!!!!!!

Only a couple of days till in-game XMB. Not quite as long a wait as MGS5.
