Little Big Planet along with having Blu-Ray is why I got my system. MGS4 is just the icing on the cake for me.

Nice run down. That DVD you get by pre-ordering sounds pretty cool, and hooray for beta key. I'm in.
But I gotta disagree with the line about MGS3, it was my favorite of the sequels.

If you're happy with the 360 game selection and don't like HD - why not just stick with what you have?
It's primarily because of being weak when it comes to the idea of not being able to finish the God of War series or miss out on another long-awaited Twisted Metal. Outside of those two, though, there's not really much incentive.

And what does LBP have to do with TOB?
I don't understand why the pre-order disc you get isn't a Blu-ray. This title is console exclusive so put the pre-order junk in HD.

I'll pick this up if it gets decent reviews. I'm not too interested in the online stuff though.

Agreed. In fact, I prefer it to MGS1 just on the basis of the final 3 hours alone.
For me MGS3 was every bit as good as the first.

It's shit like this that gives 360 owners a bad name, with a library comprising mostly of FPS games - to say there's nothing on the PS3 that appeals only reinforces my opinion that 360 owners only want FPS games and nothing else.

The only thing the PS3 doesn't cater to, is your baseless dislike of the PS3.

In my opinion, of course. It also doesn't cater very well for people looking for a solid console-based marketplace.
And to say that the 360 has a library of nearly nothing but FPSes is positively bonkers as well.

I guess you missed Forza 2, Crackdown, Project Gotham Racing 4, Mass Effect, Puzzle Quest, Viva Pinata, Saint's Row, Lost Odyssey and Ace Combat 6.
Just adding to the chorus of praise for MSG3 (especially the "subsistence" version for it's first-person view) - it's easily my favorite Metal Gear - Portable Ops for the PSP ain't bad either.

Alex, I think you need to come clean as to your disparaging comments towards MGS3 - not that you're not entitled to your opinion, but when it runs so contrary to public perception, you should give some reasons as to why.
MGS 3 is EASILY the best of the series so far. Now go back to smoking crack.
As far as the overall experience, MGS1 is the most involving and sublime. MGS3 is a very very close second, but overall has the best gameplay (thought mgs4 looks to change that). It's honestly probably the best game for the ps2 (or at least in most people's top 3). I'll have to add to the "what's wrong with you?" chorus.

Also, MGS2 was messy, but not bad. Just over ambitious.

And also: I'm trying to decide if I should get a shitty used ps3 for a little over 300 bucks (I really just want it for mgs4) or if I should go for the bundle, which is a great deal. The problem is that I don't think the bundle system is backwards compatable.
Yeah, three was cool. Jesus, talkbacks are fucking evil, aren't they? What a bunch of pussies. Oh, and you suck.

I pretty much echo your statements about all 3 MGS games. I think I read on Kotaku that the MGS4 bundle is backwards compatible but, if that "shitty used PS3" is one of the 60 GB models I would probably lean towards buying that one if it's well taken care of.
Sadly, it's the 40GB model. If it was the 60GB, I'd have bought it already.

As it is, I'm having trouble deciding if I want the bundle or the SPECIAL EDITION pre-order which isn't even special. Also, I'm broke and don't have 500 to blow like most people here, which means I'll buy it anyway.
The 80GB has some back compat it's just not 100%. I don't know anyone who owns an 80GB one though so I can't really attest to how well it does the emulation.
I have an 80gig and so far every game I've tried, that I own, works great.

I'm really loving the comments, actually. I love seeing people bent out of shape over video games, of all things.

I would hope that most of you realize I throw out jokes just to make things interesting... I don't have a vendetta against Metal Gear or the PS3, it's just fun to make the fanboys nuts. I'm mostly joking half the time.

Except, of course, that Metal Gear Solid 3 wasn't all that great. Eating snakes and becoming a camouflage fashion expert doesn't make for a good time. And any game that requires a Substinence revamp to fix core issues must not have been that great in the first place....

Portable Ops and the Acid games (yeah, I went there) were better than 2 or 3, anyway.
Alex learned from Devin, it seems.

And I gotta agree about what's being said about MGS3. I'm not even a rabid fan of MGS, but 3 kicked ass, snake eating aside.

The sniper boss battle and the last 2 hours alone make it awesome.

I feel like I'm the only person who appreciated MGS2 a lot more the second time through.
You need to get into the fucked up mindset of the world and try to understand the weeeeeird rules.

Of course you are free to your own opinion and I certainly read a few hostile reviews (Penny Arcade were not a fan) aswell.

However, it has a 91 rating on metacritic:
http://www.metacritic.com/games/plat...20gear#critics)

Many of the regular critics I read have it is one of their all time great games.

Yes it's mostly illogical nonsense, but within that bizarre and eccentric gameworld it's an intensely rich, cinematic and rewarding experience.
I have to agree on MGS3. The game has its flaws, sure, but the boss battles are amazing. I still remember The End taking me about an hour to complete. It was legendary.

That said, I'm on the fence about the fourth installment. It looks amazing (graphics-wise) so far, but the trailers have pretty much been pimping the cutscenes rather than the gameplay; and what has been shown has been underwhelming. I hope that the delays have given Kojima and company the opportunity to beef up the gameplay considerably, although I do wish the man would take a page from Valve and learn to integrate cutscenes in-game.
Substinence wasn't released to "correct core issues", it was a release with bonus features, multiplayer, and a free camera perspective.

MGS3 integrating cut-scenes in-game would be weird. I think they do enough letting you mess with the camera during the cutscenes, and I think the cutscenes make it feel more cinematic, like you're playing a movie. Half-Life is more like...you're IN the game.

Also disliking MGS2's narrative is like leaving No Country For Old Men and saying you didn't like the ending.
....

Wow.
Jesus. On the other hand, I think that's the largest talkback conversation I've ever seen on CHUD since the update, so congrats Alex.
Well of course it would generate a lot of "talkback" comments. If Chud ran a story titled "MGS is a fine game" and at the same time ran a story titled "MGS is the shittiest fucking game ever made, experts say", which do you think is going to generate more conversation? Outrage manufactures word of mouth.

I know of all those games, and in your defence - there's only something like 20(?)% of 360 games being shooters. At the same time, naming at least a game from every genre is hardly redeeming either. Maybe being more specific on the "shooter" front would have helped things. Or the fact the whole console relied on Halo 3 to sell.

But yeah, Mass Effect and Ace Combat are good (edit: VERY good) We could praise the games from all consoles worthy of praise - that still doesn't stop the fact that of it's entire life - the only games to make press (ME aside, of course) involved shooting things. Bioshock. Halo. Gears.

Multiformat stuff aside, it's just not inspiring. But then, Sony does have the advantage of having always had every genre covered massively in the last generation.

Now pardon me while I go play some CoD

LBP is built on the Half Life engine.

It's easy to have that advantage when the only competition for the longest time was the Gamecube. Seriously, who else were they supposed to make games for? Finally, Xbox came along. Even then, Xbox was non-existent in Japan so who were the Japanese developers going to develop for most often?

Having owned an xbox last gen, I was actually kinda happy with the games selection - I mean, there were plenty of poor games, but the genres were all well covered with a few really sweet titles.

In fairness, maybe this shooter thing is more of a craze than any single format's curse. If we didn't buy 'em, they wouldn't make 'em. Or do we buy them because they're not making much of anything else? Vicious circle.

A new Hands on Preview and a Hideo Kojima interview are up on IGN. There are some new screens as well.

I remember this game!

If you don't want to pre-order to get access to the Metal Gear Online beta, there's a convoluted process you can go through to sign up for the open Japanese one for free. Instructions are here.

I followed it and managed to get an access code (and I already have a Japanese PSN account) so I'm looking forward to this. Beta downloads begin 4/17 and the actual beta starts on 4/21 and ends 5/5 I believe.

BTW, if you create a Japanese PSN account you can also download the demo for Echochrome for PS3 from the store. It's pretty cool!

So I reserved MGS 4 today and got the beta invite. Anyone else planning on reserving it or playing the beta? I also got this DVD that tells the history of Big Boss and the three snakes(Solid, Liquid, Solidus) for reserving it, it's pretty cool.

Yeah I reserved it this weekend and got the DVD and beta code. I probably won't play anything else the 2 weeks the beta is live.
Beta comes out during finals and GTA4 so I'll have to pass. But June 12th will be a great day.
It's nice to have all this choice for a change.

Where did you reserve it?

Called EB Games and they told me the Gamecrazy a block away had it so I got it there. EB Games told me they would have them this week. I just wanted to make sure I got my code so I went to Gamecrazy.
Looks like I'll be doing this later this week. Cannot wait!
I'll be using the beta as something to hold me over until GTA IV. I was never good at MGS 3 online but I never really gave it a chance.
For those who haven't seen it, see this.

Great kung-fu on par with hong kong.

Also, raiden, due to this, is no longer fully gay, he is now bi-sexual due to him penetrating vamp so much.

It's in the second half.

We get it, you don't like metal gear.
Pointless (and often nonsensical) exposition? You know it's MGS.

The worst thing about that fight is that in no way is the user involved in it. That's always my issue with these series, the stuff the player gets to do is never really the 'cool' stuff in the game.

And Liquid Snake's HAIR looked like crap. Why even put it in there if you can't animate it decently?

edit: oops. I blame YellowHare for the slip.

Liquid Snake has a poorly-animated bunny?

I still can't wait for this game. Just pre-ordered it yesterday and got my code for the online beta. That dvd was pretty cool as well.
A sad day in the history of video games when we have to complain about a character's hair animation.
