I really liked UN Squadron on the SNES.

How could I forget Choplifter? I was the man at that in the arcade, and I was only a child. Sadly I don't think there was an ending, the levels just kept repeating.

What console has the best Choplifter port? Is it on any collections? I think it was a SEGA game, or maybe Taito.

That game sucked on the Sega Master System.

A lot of games sucked on the Sega Master System.

I remember having a lot of love for that GIjoe 3rd person arcade shooter that Konami made...wasted a lot of money on that one, and yes, everyone wanted to play as Snake Eyes, dammit.

http://www.arcadeflyers.com/?page=fl...id=421&image=1 yeah, this brings up memories.

Lords of Thunder is up on the Wii Virtual Console. Lords of Thunder was a shooter for the TG-16/Turbo Duo that was mentioned earlier in this thread. I hadn't been on the VC in a while and took a few minutes to check it out this weekend. I saw Lords of Thunder on there and picked it up for the 800 points ($8) and then proceeded to be reminded at how much better I used to be at shooters in the past. I'm happy to be able to play it (and Gate of Thunder) again though.

Bumpity bump.

Any recommendations for the best of the "flying" shooters(like Gradius or Ikaruga) on the Wii Virtual Console? Here is the list of available games.

I still have a working Super NES, so I already have some of these, but I'm looking for some gems that I may have missed over the years.

Nexus-7, While Metal Slug 1 and 2 are not just Flying Shooters there are levels where you wear a jet pack, fly a jet, or a helicopter. Of course the Metal Slug Anthology is available for the...Wii, it includes all 7 Metal Slug Games. I would add Gradius 2 from the Turbographics 16 as the Gradius series is fantastic.
Other good Flying shooters...
Forgotten Worlds
Space Harrier

The two I mention (Gate of Thunder & Lords of Thunder) in the post right above yours are definitely worthwhile. If I had to pick one I'd go with Gate of Thunder. That one just works for me and it's still a blast. they need volume control though... they both have great music that can get drowned out by all the sound effects. Both are side scrolling shooters. The Turbo Grafx has a lot of great shooters avaialble on the VC. You can't go wrong with Blazing Lazers. Super Star Soldier is a good one as well. Those two are both top down shooters.

Thanks Duke, but I already have the anthology. It is great. My only gripes are the lack of classic controller support, and for some reason the load screens pop up when the screen isn't black(very minor nitpick but it doesn't make a lick of sense).
I'd go for Space Harrier also, I have fond memories, but I think the only version up on the VC is the Master System port. So no thanks. That game should totally get a Wii remake though.

Yeah Rich, I was eyeballing your post before I bumped the thread. I might give Gate of Thunder a shot(no pun intended). Is the price bump because those games are imports, or Turbo CD games? I'm not sure if I have space left for a Turbo CD game. Damn lack of hard drive.

Not WII but not mentioned in the thread either: R-Type Final, for PS2 and also PSP, I think. The PS2 version was controller-bitingly tough to the point of merciless, but it's a great title for shoot'em up diehards, and the sheer wealth of ships & weapons it's oldschool reference heaven.

And to further hump the bump: anyone here interested in a list of weird-ass, trippy, or just hard-as-nails shooters on the commodore 64? I won't go through the effort of listing 'em if nobody cares, but if you wanna enrich your collection with some easy-to-emulate obscure gems I can hook you up. A lot of these games are forgotten, but some are still delightfully playable to this day, and may feature a great soundtrack thanks to the everlasting powers of the SID soundchip.

A couple of shooters that were great in the arcade but really lost something in every home translation:

Gain Ground and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Aq3YpA963ts (man, the music brings me back...)

Time Soldiers

Also, on the topic of MUSHA - best videogame soundtrack of the 90's? Maybe. Tossup with Streets of Rage.

Hey Nexus, a few days later... but Gate of Thunderand Lords of Thunder were both Turbo CD games and really made good use of the CDs for the rockin' soundtracks. I like Gate of Thunder more than Lords and I also think that Gate has a better soundtrack (I actually listen to some of it from time to time... go iPod!), but Lords of Tunder is notable, in my book at least, because it has a screechy heavy metal soundtrack that otherwise clashes with its otherwise Medievil aesthetics (if it's even possible to classify the setting at all... probably best to just enjoy shooting stuff)

If you're concerned about Wii space and can't fit these then Blazing Lazers would definitely be worthwhile. It was one of the first games released for the TG-16 and it's probably one of the best. All things considered, the audio is pretty impressive there as well.
