William F. Buckley Jr died...

The father of the modern Conservative movement died today at his home in CT.

(A side note: it's kinda funny how most of these blue-blood Conservative types tend to shy away from Red States. Ann Coulter lives in New York, from what I understand.)

This is the guy who wanted to "stand astride history yelling: 'Stop!'." Which is a pretty stupid idea, unless you come from a wealthy family. But, to his credit, in his last few years, he repudiated some of the aspects of modern conservativism, like Bush's foreign policy.

Anyway, condolences to his family and friends.

What's going to be aggravating is listening to all the wingnuts who called Buckley a "coward" and "an old man" after this column on our failure in Iraq fall all over themselves about how great he was and how they'll be carrying on his fight.

I'll always remember Buckley for being one of those Skull and Bones members (the increasingly less secret Yale fraternity of George W. Bush and John Kerry, amongst others) who actually picketed and left the organization when they decided to allow female entrants.

"Brown, as National Review declared many years ago, was bad law and bad sociology. We are now tasting its bitter fruits. Race relations in the country are ten times worse than in 1954."
Wotta guy!

Good riddance to bad rubbish.

I can't wait to see his gold-covered coffin encrusted with the finest jewels.

A lot of folks think Brown is a poorly reasoned decision ... but that's just a strange quote from Buckley altogether.

Please don't try to make excuses for him.

I was going to say the exact same thing as Overlord, but in the context of what Buckley is saying, it's like pointing out that a few buildings in Hiroshima were probably due to be demolished.

It's good that all the people who were against the civil right movement are dying. It makes the world a better place.
