The Last Emperor - Criterion

Wow! Just got finished with the Theatrical version. What an amazingly dense set for a fantastic and obtuse masterpiece.

This version, obviously, eclipses every DVD incarnation that came before it.

My one question, and maybe somebody can fill in the blanks, but any word on Criterion going Blu-Ray anytime soon; I covet this film in 1080p.

We know this is a concern for many of our customers, but we honestly don’t think consumers should have to take a stand in a format war. That said, we know how good our films can look in high definition because we’ve been doing all our mastering and restoration in HD for years. But the format war has as much to do with patent licenses and pressing plants as it does with putting gorgeous images on your screen. At this point, any solution that would let consumers upgrade with confidence would be a step in the right direction, and as soon as that solution emerges, we’ll be there.

I hope now that Blu-Ray has won out, Criterion will start working on them, but I am still scared of how much they will cost. The Last Emeror cost $41 on Amazon, I would imagine the Blu-Ray would cost between $50-$60.

Hey, it's the price you pay for quality. Granted, a lower price is more preferable, but I would gladly pay 60 bucks for this set in HD.

Everyone seems to forget the initial cost of Laserdiscs and sell-through VHS back in the day (I sure as shit remember the $99.99 sell-through WIZARD OF OZ the first time it hit my local supermarket in-house video store) - so $50-60 is fairly reasonable.

They need to lower the price of the players though. I am still not buying many Blu-Rays because I can only watch them on my PS3, which is in the living room on the big TV. I spend a lot of time in the office working and can't watch them in there. I can't watch them when I am in bed. I can't watch them on the laptop when I am travelling. It is a lot of investment for limited viewing right now.

If the players (and computer drives) comes down, I would be more willing to pony up the money. I remember how much VHS and DVD and all that cost when it was first released, I just don't remember how long it took to become affordable.

I think with format war finally over, the competition is finally going to heat up to get cheaper players out there, and some lower end electronics makers will join the BRDA wagon, The next Sony player has msrp of $400, but I'll imagine once Xmas roles around we will finally see a few players $50 or so beneath a PS3.
