Nine Inch Nails presents Ghosts I - IV, a brand new 36 track instrumental collection available right now. Almost two hours of new music composed and recorded over an intense ten week period last fall, Ghosts I - IV sprawls Nine Inch Nails across a variety of new terrain.

Trent Reznor explains, "I've been considering and wanting to make this kind of record for years, but by its very nature it wouldn't have made sense until this point. This collection of music is the result of working from a very visual perspective - dressing imagined locations and scenarios with sound and texture; a soundtrack for daydreams. I'm very pleased with the result and the ability to present it directly to you without interference. I hope you enjoy the first four volumes of Ghosts."
Well that was out of fucking nowhere. Awesome.

My day is now validated. Thank you, Nexus!!

EDIT TO ADD: I just ordered the $5 dollar download, and I expect to listen to it when I get back from work. I can't hardly wait!!!!
My mind is absolutely blown right now. I'm half expecting this is a hoax.

EDIT: No hoax. I'm OCD enough about NIN that I'm probably getting the 75$ version.

The site is swamped as fuck. I may have to deal with this tomorrow.

*curses loudly*
I'm going for the 75$ version and I'm fighting my dark self not to get the 300$ one.
Wow this came out of the blue. Every N.I.N. fan who is near a computer must be logging onto that site, I can't get it happening.
Listening to the free demo...pretty good so far.

49.99$ shipping and handling!

Cripes. For the $75 one, or $300?

Sounds like the NIN fan I used to be. I probably would have sold a kidney to get the Fragile early. Then With Teeth Happened.

I'm slowly coming back around though. I loved the hell out of Year Zero and the majority of the remix disc.
My birthday's next week, and I too have NIN OCD. $75 version it is.
Listening to it right now.

Trent Reznor needs to find a film to compose.

ASAP.

Wasn't that Lost Highway??

Anyways, I do want to hear this but I must be part of some grumpy old man clique that still thinks Reznor peaked well and truly with The Downward Spiral.

Its not that subsequent records were that bad - just that TDS was so fucking GOOD.

Still Im keen to give this a listen
You should totally give this a try Rain Dog. I more or less gave up on him with The Fragile, but you should really check this one out. It's perfect late-night-scotch-and-smokeables-music.
It literally is the Best Five Bucks I ever spent.

I know he wants to work with Cronenberg. I'd see him being all over something like Videodrome.
i just bought the 300 dollar one. not that i can afford it. but i've bought every other expensive nin thing known to man, so.. hell its only money right?
and 69.99 shipping to canada... not quite as bad as the 49.99 for the $75 version.
sigh.. if only i could get the download to work..

Yes, and no. Reznor just collaborated with the soundtrack-really just making a glorified mix tape. Angelo Badalamenti handled score duties.

Same can be said with the Natural Born Killers soundtrack.
I bought the $5 version off of Amazon last night. I don't really have a need for all of the other stuff in the larger packs, and didn't want to wait for NIN.com's traffic to subside.

Great stuff. It's so long, though, that it's going to take a week to really sit down and listen to it.

(and, to whoever said it, With Teeth wasn't *that* bad... just his weakest since PHM.)
I can't get on the site, but I hear talk of a $300 version.

Now, just out of curiosity, is it a different lady who felates me each time I listen to said version, or is it always the same one? And will I need to supply lodging for her?

The girl doesn't come with the package. You need to get her yourself. It's in the instruction booklet: Go to your local goth bar. Approach random fat goth chick. Tell her about signed 300$ NIN package you have at home. Buy her booze. Remind her of signed 300$ NIN package. Enjoy!

And concerning the Natural Born Killers soundtrack, I would compare Reznor's work on it more to a DJ than a mixtape.
The site is still slammed. I'll have to keep coming back.

Damn yous, Reznor! Get more server!
Not in love with the free sample so far, but the fourth track, which has a latter-day Godflesh vibe (but better than late-model Godflesh), might earn my $5.
I've gotten two links sent to me that, so far, don't work.
after a few hours of trying my download link, i get a message saying ive used up my download limit.
hopefully this all gets straightened out soon. in the meantime i downloaded it on what. hey, i paid for it already.
I'm a little bummed that this is instrumental only, but I'm sure I'll get over it once I hear it. It has been only 10 months since YZ, after all. I shouldn't be greedy.

Since I passed on the expensive In Rainbows, that'll make me feel a little better about ordering the $75 one. I'll definitely get some use out of the Bluray version once I have my ultimate soundsystem setup.

A few people have complained about the shipping costs, and they should. They're high, but that's not what ticks me off.

I was finally able to get into the ordering system today, and I see you can use Paypal. Awesome, I have like 15 bucks in there, and don't really feel like using my credit card. I go through the entire procedure, only to find out after that the 10 dollar download(plus double CD) has a $6.99 shipping charge. Do I mind paying $16.99? Not at all, but it would have been nice to know, you know, beforehand.
Screw the site. I paid the $5, said fuck you to the series of broken links, then got a torrent.

Attn: Cast and Crew of live-action Akira flick:

I don't know what you're doing. I don't know what it's gonna look like. I don't know what the tone's gonna be like. But if this isn't what it fucking sounds like, you've already failed.

How long did it take you guys to get your (possibly broken)download link? All I've got is a damn reciept, and I figured the link would be included.

I've been thinking Mike Patton(or more specifically Fantomas) should be the one for that job, if they're sticking to the score of the anime, anyway(which they won't, it's too bizarre). If not, you and I are in total agreement. Trent should be scoring films yesterday, and Akira would be perfect.

I listened to 5 or 6 tracks last night. There was one track that I never would have guessed was NIN that caught my ear(sounded like old-meets-new Skinny Puppy). The variety seems impressive, just from that sampling.
I'm just trying to order now. I'd heard hints of something happening March 1 so I wasn't too surprised.

It's been a good time to be a NIN fan, between Year Zero, Saul Williams and now this.

I already have a Peter Murphy tattoo to do that for me.

So I'm clearly insane, because I just ordered the $300 edition. I have a real problem that needs immediate attention.

That's some bullshit. On the other other hand, ever buy anything on eBay? For a CD or DVD I pay $6.99 minimum for shipping.

I've been having problems with PayPal lately (namely, it's withdrawing from my bank account regardless of what my PayPal balance is), but that's probably how I'll be doing this. $49.99 shipping though...christ.

Hopefully they put that $300 towards their servers. My "one time download" link died after 4.2 megs, and I don't use torrents. So I guess I'm fucked.
My $5 download failed. I'll have to sort that out tonight. In the meantime I grabbed the first 9 tracks from the official torrent at the pitate bay.

I really need to hear all 36 tracks. The first 9 come off as all these interesting snippits of music that are all too brief with only 9 to sample.

It's certainly not a traditional album and the 'soundtrack' influence is very strong.

I'm in the same boat.

The impression I get is that you can try again, but at it 'may' tell you your 'download limit' has been hit. They are aware of this and will be resetting limits at some point.

I haven't tried any of this myself and will make an attempt after work.

I forgot to add, that I was charged $16.99 for shipping for the $300 version.

Maybe because you're in the states? Still, that's a big addition for Canadians if so.
If you're paying $300 for a CD in 2008, shipping charges are the least of your worries.
I'm too lazy to do it myself, so someone please cross-reference this thread with the "My Third 360 Just Died" thread. I'd like to know which Chewers I could beat to death with their own wallets.
The $300 is a limited (2500) signed and numbered collectors edition. I'm pretty sure they will all go quickly.

If you are beating people to death with their own wallets, there's collectors all over the world who spend heaps of money on things most people don't care about.

Personally, I'm gonna listen to all 36 then I might upgrade to the $75 version. The impression I get is looking at the book is part of the experience.

Unfortunately, the Ghosts I-IV site is down for the next few hours for maintenance.

We quietly released this album last night without any warning, and without any press. Because we know how devoted our fans are, we planned for an overwhelming response, and expected heavy traffic. To our surprise, the traffic was more than three times what we anticipated, and has only been getting heavier throughout the day. The response has been absolutely phenomenal, and we couldn't be happier, but our servers have taken a beating, causing numerous problems with the download site. Our developers, who have been working non-stop to combat the surge of traffic, feel that taking the site down for a few hours to fix some crucial issues is the best way to get things running smoothly again. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience.

If you ordered a download and have not yet been able to retrieve it or have experienced any technical difficulties with the download, your download link will work as soon as the site returns.
Here's hoping. I'm staying away from the site until Wednesday.
That is good to know.

Also, I found this 'review' pretty hilarious:
http://www.theninhotline.net/meatpers/html/mp080302.htm

"20 GHOSTS III
Oh hey, more doom and gloom and noise. After a couple minutes of "Wretched"-esque droning sounds, a "Starfuckers"-esque beat arises out of the noise and makes it even noisier. Then some piano comes in. Pretty standard Nine Inch Nails, actually. All it needs is Trent whining about some skank who wouldn't put out and it would be perfect."
the Meathead review for With Teeth was hilarious.

Ah, AWITHA_TEETHA.

Best part: the cartoon of the cleaning lady interrupting the recording of "Sunspots" by vacuuming the studio. "Do you mind?"
I'm up and downloading again. Fingers crossed.

Edit: Got it all. So far Ghosts II is better than Ghosts I.

I can see myself taking off a sunday arvo and just listening to the whole thing start to end.

For anyone else who had downloading troubles, I just re-used my original link and it worked.
the $300 version is officially sold out. 2500 copies preordered in 48 hours, not too bad trent.. not too bad.
that's $750,000. not taking into account production costs of course.
Got the $5 download tonight and the site seems to be working fine. Nice options regarding the download types you can choose from, but I just got the standard mp3s. I've only listened through part I so far, and it's good. Very good. I haven't given NIN any constant attention since The Fragile, & had basically written Reznor off -- not because I thought he fell off, but I just thought that NIN was no longer really to my taste. Happy to report that I am very excited about the rest of the album.

On another note, it feels really good to be able to acquire great, new music for so cheap while knowing that the artist (or artists, in Radiohead's case) is making way more than before when a record label was hijacking most of the profits.
