Nine Inch Nails "Ghosts" - Page 2

So has anyone had a good chance to listen to the album?

I've gone through three phases:

1. Firstly ZOMGWTF NEW NIN! I'll sell my first child for this! Download! Download! Download!

2. Meh, it's sorta just background music. Feels like a bunch of demos. Wish there was a bit of singing...

3. [In a quiet room with headphones] Actually this is pretty good. Oooh and this funky song is very different from the one before. Oh and I didn't notice that cool little electronic beep behind the piano. And what the hell instrument is being used in that song. Maybe I'll listen to number 28 again...

So yeah I think it's a quality release. And 110 minutes for $5 with a wide variety. My enjoyment so far has been proportional to the environment I've been listening to it in.

Ugh, I'm still really torn between buying the $75 package (which will sit on my shelf, as I have nobody to show it to who'll appreciate it on as many levels as I do) or settling for the $10 CD. I'm such an indecisive bastard.

I say just go with the 10($16.99 US) dollar version. It's 2 CDs instead of 4, and in this day and age who wants to keep changing discs? That's if you ever put them in a player in the first place, considering you'll have the digital files. It will look nice on a shelf I'm sure, but will you get much use out of it other than that? I know, there's the whole OCD thing, and I can sympathize, but I'm less and less interested in extra stuff nowadays. Maybe that's just me.

I redownloaded the album from the official site again yesterday. It was going fast and smooth, then the download croaked at 75%. Now I know how to use torrents. Thanks, Trent!
It's pretty weird for me to pirate something I paid for. It's usually just blatant thievery with me. I'm not sure how I feel about this.

I'm going to give it a few more listens, but my reaction has been similar to Tom's. Only difference being there was a wild bit of anger between step 1 and 2 when I couldn't get the album to download.

It is definitely a nice variety of experimentation from Trent. Some of it is reminiscent of the instrumental pieces from The Fragile, which is a good thing.

I'd say get the digital copy before committing to something much more expensive. If the site allows it, that is (a long shot, I know).

It's pretty good. Pretty much like listening to a modern day musical score without the association of a specific film. It definitely helps with atmosphere if one is a writer, which is a blessing for me. I am loving 20. Ghosts III the most.

True. I just recently sold my Evil Dead II limited edition tin because it's just a DVD in a big unwieldy metal box hogging shelf space, and I might as well just have it in a regular case.

The only real differences between the $10 and $75 versions of the album are a disc of multitrack files (cool in theory, but I'll never end up really doing anything with them) and a blu-ray disc I have no use for yet, and which isn't even in surround sound like that cool reissue of The Downward Spiral.

Edit: Bought the $10 version, downloading now. Tried to register on the site, but as with the remix site, a combination of absolutely unreadable captchas and failure to recognize my city(!) is making it impossible.

Oh, my mistake. I saw the photos posted earlier and just assumed the CDs were split up differently. As in volumes 1-4 each had their own disc.

As far as the multitrack files, if anyone has any interest, I'm sure Trent will be making them available on his site soon enough. Probably after the physical sets come out though.

Here are a few of my favorites. No critiques, because I wouldn't even know where to start. I just really dig the tracks. 11, 12, 16, 24, 26, and 35.

20 takes such a bizarre (gradual)turn at the 2:20 mark. I kind of love it.

I've been listening to the free stuff (and will probably be ordering the full CD set here soon) and I have to say I love #6. Especially the way it slowly builds then falls off then builds again and switches into #7. Plus, I'm a sucker for a marimba.
I like #1, the only one I've listened to, and I dig the shit out of the PDF of images to go with it. I'm excited to crack this open.

Hmmm it's hard to pick favourites. There are the more upbeat dancey ones, the sort of ominous dramatic ones, the quiet piano ones and the flat out weird ones (I'm looking at you 15).

Lets say 3, 12, 14, 28 and 31 for the moment.

( Note: it's only a matter of time before someone says their favorites are: 4, 8, 15, 16, 23 and 42. )
Somewhere out there, you know someone's using their favorite tracks from this collection as lottery numbers.
I've only listened to the free demo so far but goddamn... this is some amazing instrumental stuff here. Some of it reminds me of the Quake soundtrack, and some of it reminds me of the Fragile, but all of it is good.

I'm going to download the 5 dollar version pretty soon, and then go from there. I'd love to have the 75 dollar version but I really can't afford it right now. Between Burning Man tickets and all the concerts I'm going to I can't afford the luxury stuff.

Once I have the whole album I'm definitely going to get high and listen to it in my room with all the lights off. I'm so excited, it's hard to believe that Trent is still so awesome.

Digging through the whole thing and loving every minute of it!
When I get a chance, I'm going to plunk down the $17 bucks for the 2 CDs.

Can't wait.
I had no idea that this was put out under the Creative Commons license. More good news just keeps coming with this bundle of goodness.

Marimba. Never enough.

Surprised this isn't here yet.

Hello-
First of all, a sincere THANK YOU for the response to Ghosts. We are all amazed at the reaction for what we assumed would be a quiet curiosity in the NIN catalog. My faith in all of you has been restored - let's all go have coffee somewhere (my treat)!

Today we announce the expansion of the Ghosts project into the visual world. This record began as an experiment with us using sound as a means to describe visuals. Early in the project we thought it would be interesting to see what the community could create / collaborate on as a reaction to the music we were making. We wanted to keep the canvas as blank as possible for you, hence the lack of descriptive song titles and the primarily textural artwork and packaging.
So here's the plan: we've teamed up with YouTube to host a "film festival" around Ghosts. The concept is for you to take whatever tracks you feel inspired by from Ghosts and create what you feel should accompany them visually. You will be able to see all of the submissions, and a team of us (including me) will be sorting through them and setting aside ones we feel are exceptional. Eventually (within a couple of months?) we will present a virtual "film festival" with me and some special guests presenting selections of your work.
This isn't a contest and you don't win elaborate prizes - it's meant to be an experiment in collaboration and a chance for us to interact beyond the typical one-way artist-to-fan relationship. We've discussed some interesting ways this could go, including multiple installments of the online "film festivals," to broadcast TV specials, to a one-time live performance of the entire Ghosts record with your visuals involved. It really depends on how this progresses and develops.
We are all very much looking forward to what you come up with, and hope you enjoy the experience. Visit our YouTube channel for information on how to participate.

To jumpstart the remixes for Ghosts I-IV while we wait for the deluxe packages to ship, we've posted the multitracks for five songs from the album for download in the MIX section. You can also now select tracks from Ghosts when uploading remixes. Enjoy!

That is so cool, and, I am so fucking on that.

It's downloading right now as I type this...

24% - hurry up, damn you!

God, everything about this album's release makes me happy, for Trent and the industry.
I'm pretty sure that track 4 is the soundtrack to my life.

Is it the theme song from "Perfect Strangers?" Cuz if it is, me too.
From the handful of tracks I've listened to, it's alright. It has some nice eerie piano playing, which I love. I gotta say I like track 22 a lot.

Okay, I've decided. Other than 2 or 3 tracks, I love the ever-living shit out of this album. My only real complaint? I wish a few of the songs went on for a few minutes longer.

It's comments like this, and albums like this, that really make me miss pot.

I agree. Trent's the man. The video stuff, the remixing, all awesome.

Anyone order the CDs as well? Just wondering if anyone got their copy yet.
I'm sticking with the 5 dollar download because I am a poor bastard.

I ordered the CDs; nothing yet. I'm in Canada though, so I expect I'll wait an extra day or two.
I got the downloads because I don't really have any use for CD's anymore. It just ends up on my MP3 player anyways.

However I might end up getting NIN's "Still" CD because I can't find it anywhere else.

Still is fantastic.

I can't find it anywhere either, and I want it so bad! I heard the whole thing on acid once and it was pretty spectacular.

I have this CD. Came with their live CD. Mint condition. Never really listen to it. I bet it would sound great on acid..... then again wouldn't anything?
Actually no. It's weird but I've done numerous tests.

For some reason Freebird sounds really shitty on acid. It's all tinny and far away sounding. And other songs that you would never expect to enjoy at all can become a rich, varied wonderland of audio distortion and suddenly meaningful lyrics.

I saw Phish on shrooms. Had a good time, saw a hippie fall down a flight of stairs(nothing against hippies specifically), music still sucked though.
Yeah, I don't get all the hippie Phish love.
With regards to the Still album, I found it on Soulseek. So if you want to download the tracks get it off there.

Edit: I was looking on my computer and I have the Still mp3s, so if anyone wants them PM me.

I wish I could still find a copy of the live CD with Still attached but I can't.

I still can't quite figure out what to make of Ghosts. I like it, but I keep listening to it when I'm concentrating on something else (Background music for homework). I need to sit down once school is out and actually listen.
