What's not funny

Thread Starter
The use of celeb names in comments to make 'hilarious' comments. I don't mean it's not funny as in it's offensive or in bad taste or cruel. I mean it's actually without humor. I think it's likely one of you guys, so this is just an FYI: You're not funny.

Get rid of the comments = Problem Solved

Then nobody would talk about articles or reviews.

Ever.

I really hope that some of you are not leaving especially obnoxious comments hoping that they make us get rid of commenting. That would be pathetic.
Somebody kindly link the talkback I should read so I can be up to date on this. No way I'm digging through them at random.

It's sandwiched between the one where someone by the username of Beelzebub says that Phil Owen should choke to death on a hamburger and the one where some guy's talking about how Dakota Fanning movies make him sweat piss.

Oh, that one.

I agree. But, of all the things to complain about regarding the talkbacks, you bring up this? Eh.

What else am I going to complain about? The obvious trolling? Anybody who has been on the internet for more than a week knows that all trolls want is attention. The people posting as celebs think they're being funny, and most of them aren't trolling. They just suck.
Not to argue about your point, because it is valid. But since it is all but certain that this person(s) are members of the board as well wouldn´t it be useful to let people know via the mainpage by means of an article or just a quick note on the mainpage?

ETA after reading your last post: Unless you deem talking to obvious trolls a waste of time that is.
Now I actually check the front page more often, because I looove getting to an article before there are any talkback posts. It feels so pristine.

What do you mean? I love getting Nick's Left Nut's perspective on things.

Look at any of them. I think there's been one for every article I've posted for the last couple weeks.
And God hasn't posted on the MB in forever.

Do wish you could regulate it a bit. The boards are the boards, but that crap's uglyin' up the front of the house.
Isn't there an approval process before the comment is posted? Just delete the comments you deem unfunny and be done with it.
Doubt anyone has the time.
I'm surprised people haven't been posting on the Talkbacks using other people's board names to start shit.

We can, to some extent.

Comments are automatically approved, but I delete ones from my articles all the time. My standards for doing so vary, based on the day.

Really. If MySpace can allow you to approve comments before they get posted, you would think we could get that process going on the talkbacks here.

I tend to only delete wildly off topic Phil trolling.

Don't give 'em any ideas.
Writers don't have time to approve every comment. And, honestly, people shouldn't be so retarded.

Thanks for the idea. Time to go leave some caustic one-liners signed DeadChickRFun.
I don't mind the comments. Then again, I dealt with the original talkbackers for four years. These guys... amateurs.

Dear Nick, Devin, Russ, etc.,

You're not faggots.

Sincerely,

I agree with you on that one, that people shouldn't be such dickblisters, but it only takes a second to look at a comment, see if it has "u r such a cocksukker!" in it, and either hit approve or disapprove. Maybe I'm over-simplifying it, but it seems easy.

Uh, you mean ppl attacking Owen, right? If so, sorry for the egocentrism. I only posted one or two comments on the main page, always using "Phil".
Dev produces, what, four stories a day? The warm up to Chudsploitation got 35 comments as of now. Spending time to approve 100 comments a day is a gigantic waste of time, energy.
I asked this before and didn't get a clear answer, why not just make it so that ppl have to sign up for talkbacks? The option of entering a new user name every time is obviously too tempting.

Yeah.
I find them hysterical, actually. Especially the one Wipeout fanboy that followed me around (and I believe hit Russ mistakenly) because I slammed his favorite franchise. Love how riled up people get about games.

But I have to admit, the first God to Owen ones cracked me up. Joke got real stale real fast, like most things on the internet.

Phil Owen.
I rarely ever post a comment, but I only use my name when I do. Some of the shit people have written on there....dear lord.
I think because Devin and other writers are making such a big deal about this is that they get notified about every single entry.

I'm pretty sure they would care less if they didn't get notified so much.

No, that's not why. It's because it's not fucking funny.

I think it's already happened. I've seen a few off-kilter comments that don't sound anything like the poster. If I find the ones I'm talking about, I'll post it here - but I don't think it's a serious problem and I very well may have misread them. Plus we're all pretty discerning here.

And to clarify, I'm not the "andrew" who has been posting on all those talkbacks recently by the way. That guy's angry.
It's funny if it is an obscure celebrity, and they say something ironic. Or sarcastic. That's a very funny thing to do.
I happily ignore the comment section.

Speaking about people disgusing themselves as celebs: where's Michael Bay? He is missed.
I agree with Devin here, but my question is do the unknown user guys, is that something they type, or does that happen by leaving a field blank? That's some annoying shit.

I hope this dumb shit gets hammered out, because I like the instant feedback of the talkbacks, and that the authors actually seem to read and care about them. Aren't these problems, though, the reason talkbacks for the site were kind of feared by some of us? I understand why they are there, and theoretically they serve a great purpose, but I can't help but wonder if putting up with the shit is just going to be par for the course.
This shit will eventually work itself out. If we keep ignoring them, especially in the comments, they'll get bored and go back to flinging shit or whatever it is such people do for amusement.
To me, leaving Talkback comments is like eating a meal in your hallway.

Why eat there when we have a nicer place, the living room. (boards)

The impression that I get is that the boards are downplayed because the writers would rather people leave talkback comments (which keeps people clicking the front pages for those ad bucks), only it's backfiring horribly.

Get your ass over to Aintitcool. This shit will never work itself out. Not until the day assholes stop being born, Children of Men-style.
Use them or do not use them. I am not sure why people get all upset by them. Do not like them ? Fine ignore them, it is damn easy to do. If you are using them, do not be a douche, make real comments. Also not hard to do. Maybe they will not ever be pie in the sky greatness, but oh well.

You know this is the internet we're talking about here, right?
I just can't believe that people are using the talkbacks to sling shit and make unfunny jokes. Man, what an outrage.
I'll admit that talkback-style comments don't ruin everything they touch. We all use YouTube and it's easy to ignore the comments there (which are worse than anything CHUD will ever have), and the comments on The AV Club's articles can sometimes be pretty good.
