Favre Retires

A sad day for those who enjoy him for sure, but at least he went out looking like Brett Favre and not a shell of himself.

ESPN has the story.
I was wondering why the flags were at half mast and everyone was wearing black today.
Oh, thank you, Jesus.

I'm not watching the local news for a month, though. I wonder how many of the shows I watch are going to be preempted by touching tributes to the greatest man ever to walk the face of the earth.
As a Bear fan I'm glad because he always killed them. I love what he stood for and how he played but it was time.

He'll be appreciated more in GB when they can't find another Farve fr the next 20 years.

I get that it's tiring to hear about one guy all of the time, but lets be honest, the guy deserves most of the press he gets. He's not a jerk, he played hard every time he touched the feild.

I'm not saying we should hold candle light vigil's or have 24 hour specials on ESPN, but the guy should get a little respect on his way out.

Plus with his retiring, there's a good chance John Madden will finally off himself.

I don't think it's mathematically possible for him to be more appreciated in Green Bay.

Of course not, but again, it's deserved. Well except for Madden's over the top man-love of him.

As a husband of a Minnesota Vikings fan... Thank God!

And the entire state of Wisconsin's over-the-top man-love for him (here's the main page of The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel today). I'm kind of shocked that I didn't wake up this morning to the sound of wailing and rending garments.

Now he can devote time to throwing ill-advised interceptions at his ranch.

If a cure for cancer were found, New York exploded, and scientists discovered living dinosaurs in Siberia today, Favre's retirement would still get about 25 minutes of the 30-minute local news tonight on every station.

It's great that he can throw a football really well and even took that difficult, extra step as a human by not being a jerk, but I don't think you can quite understand the absurdity of Packers coverage unless you're a non-football fan living in Wisconsin.

I love the 1992-2007. What, did he die?

There are well-advised interceptions?

I concur, though I have a feeling people here are damn well going to try.

He'll just replace Farve with Peyton.

Chris, I would offer you a safe house until the brouhaha passes, but I think you'd have to go at least as far south as Missouri to be safe.

I still appreciate the offer, Zooey. For now, I'll just black out my windows and stuff cotton in my ears. That should keep me from seeing all the ritual suicides, or hearing all the crying for a while at least.

We all know that at some point in the near future, all steel in Green Bay will be gathered up and melted to create a 450 ft tall robotic statue of Favre. THe government will kick in some money so he'll actually be able to throw the football/ICBM all the way to Russia.

Unfortunately, it'll be picked off somewhere around Japan and be run all the way back.

Anyway, I kid, but I've always been a Favre fan. I guess it's good that he had one last good season before calling it quits.

Is Aaron Rogers going to be Favre's Steve Young?

He's looked good in the little playing time he's had, but the second he has a bad game they'll be calling for blood.

If he even ends up as the starter.

Even as a Packer fan I found his media coverage absurd. I mean that was, what, a six year farewell tour since he first started talking about retiring? He was like the damn Rolling Stones. Seemed like every January-March the entire state gnawed on their fingers until Favre would make an announcement saying "eh, one more year".

To his credit, he did go out a lot better than I thought he would this year. He had a love for the game and it showed, but the last few years seemed like he was just trying to squash every Marino record around.

I hate to be that guy, but I really wish I could rep you for this. Great stuff.

I heard they're thinking about setting up a wailing wall at Lambeau Field, and that fans can mourn for 15 minutes before each game.

"I'm in town to play the Dolphins, you dumb ass"

I'll miss Brett. He brought Green Bay back to respectability (and beyond) and went from a 7th string QB at Southern Miss to a first ballot HOF'er with some truly legendary performances.

Dude, it could be so much worse. You could get most of your local football news coverage from the vile hate factory that is Philadelphia.

Greatest Packer of the modern era and second only to Don Hutson as greatest Packer ever, IMO. I won't say he saved the franchise, but he totally erased the endless reminiscing to the Lombardi era and made modern Packer football relevant again.

Not the greatest quarterback ever, although he's easily in the top 10, but he just might have been the most entertaining to watch play.

Masochistic much?

There's a whole generation of people who have never known another Packer quarterback other than Brett Favre. Those of us who's memory goes farther back will truly appreciate and miss him.
I do not envy the guy they got to replace him. I just...oh god...I've seen Cheeseheads strip a cow that looked cross at a picture of Favre in under thirty seconds, I can't imagine what they'll do to a guy who has to follow him.

Surely there was a time when the world was filled with Light and Majik before Favre...
I'm just glad to know that in the highlights of his career, they can always fade out on that great overtime interception to end their playoff run. Honestly though, Favre was great in his prime and could still be good. But it was pretty obvious that as he got older, playing in the cold started seriously hurting his performance. There were a number of examples of this happening this season including pretty much all of the home games from Thanksgiving on (and that second loss to the Bears).

Sorry to see him go - I don't think I've ever seen a pro athlete have so much fun while playing the game.

Actually, he was having a Mormon-esque polyandrous relationship with Brady and Favre for the past several years, and this season I noticed him casting leering glances Tony Romo's way.

That's only because the news leaked at about 10 am or so.

You assume I was out of bed before 10, sir. I live a life of genteel sloth.

Just to test my theory, I watched the 5 pm news on the local ABC affiliate. The entire show was about Favre, with a 30-second aside mentioning the primaries. They've sent their sports guy to stalk Favre at home in LA, since he didn't come to Green Bay. There's going to be an hour-long special about Favre's retirement tonight. There were scrolling updates during Jeopardy!.

Romo is a tease that will lead Madden on, but botch a playoff game and leave him hanging at the last moment.

Madden with QB Blueballs. Imagine it. Fear it.

Well, MZ, you know where I stand on Wisconsin football teams (aside to those who don't - I fuckin' love 'em) and even I'm pretty much going to ground to avoid the immense circle jerk over Favre.

I was there for the highlights and the lowlights, I don't need some dipshit local sportsguy (or even some dipshit national sportsguy) recounting them for me, thank ya very much.
Anyawatchin Angel, While the retirement of Brett Favre will make John Madden wistfull, Why would he then switch to favoring Peyton Manning...instead of his younger brother Eli...since both Mannings have the same amount of Super Bowl rings 1? Also, it only took Eli 4 years to win a ring instead of his older brothers 9.
...but Eli doesn't flap his arms around before every snap nor throw for scandalous amounts of yards and tds.
