Gary Gygax Runs Out of Hit Points

I met him a few times at sci-fi conventions and played in a game he dungeon mastered once. I remember him being a nice guy, but it's been nearly 20 years since I met him so my memory might be faulty.

At any rate, I was one of those high school nerds who hosted games two or three times a month and loved the shit out of it. Without D&D, I probably wouldn't have ever tried my hand at acting, and without acting I wouldn't have met my wife. So hey, Gygax managed to land me a lady . . . in a roundabout way.

I've known quite a number of women who played tabletop games.
Funny, that.

Anyway, whether you liked what he did or not, the guy was decidedly inventive.

Devin's jabs at the D&D crowd (which I belonged to back in the day), using references to saving throws and rolling character stats are either from 1st hand experience or researched.

Nerd!

Since pouring out a 40 isn't appropriate, should we roll a d100 for all the brothers who didn't make it?

Maybe we could pour out a 2-liter bottle of Sunkist and mash up some Cheetos under our Converse sneakers.

+7 armor rendered ineffective.

Now, I don't really know what that means, but a friend who played this stuff thought it was funny.

May he be buried with his best 20-sided die

Also, said jokes were done in the Conan O'Brien nerd voice.

Well, looks like Mountain Dew and Cheetos is on the docket for this evening. Maybe even a viewing of Dungeons & Dragons! (Don't worry, I would never, ever endorse such movie watching activity)

I was actually not aware they released 4th edition rules. This is a big step for me.

Well, he did start the thing off with "If you're a nerd like me,"
