Help with phone cal recording?

I've got a chance to interview Dario Argento by phone this Friday, but I just dumped my land line. Does anyone know of a way to record a call on a cell phone that's reasonably affordable and easyish.

Try radio shack. What I've done in the past is use an earbud-sized microphone and put it in my ear while I talked. If the cell has speakerphone, I suppose a regular tape recorder might work but the sound quality might be shit.

Yeah, I just don't see Dario Argento having the patience for that...

Repeat everything he says into a tape recorder. If he asks what that is, tell him that it's just an echo.

You could always not phone, and 'wing-it' using ELIZA.

> Hello, I'm Gabe.
* Argento...What went wrong with my last film?
> Don't you say hello?
* Hello
> How are you today.. What would you like to discuss?
* My NEW 'Mother' movie
> Can you elaborate on that?
* The critics panned the last one, so I thought I'd start afresh.
> What does that suggest to you?
* I guess I just got stuck up my own ass.
> I'm not sure I understand you fully.
* The fans were behind it, but I just lost my way.
> Can you elaborate on that?
> *** Are We going to Chat? ***
> I can't help you without a dialog!

Cheap as hell recording patches at Radio Shack.

It was a great idea Phil, but none of the mic adapters fit my new dumbass phone. I sent an email begging for an email interview, and sweetened the deal by telling them I have an Italian translator waiting in the wings (which is true).

None of the recorders you found have USB ports? If your cell phone can hook into a USB port, you should be able to find a recorder that would work through that.

What you need is not something that plugs into your phone, but something plugs into your recorder. They have this thing at Radio Shack that you plug into your recorder's mic port and then stick in your phone ear. It records everything that comes out of your phone while still allowing you to hear everything.

Yeah, I tried that but for some reason none of the Radio Shack attachements fit my new phone. It really sucks because I just traded over this last weekend. If I would've known I would've waited a week. It looks like I missed my chance anyway, but thanks for the advice and thanks to everyone for not pointing out the fact that I forgot a 'L' on my headline.

That's what I keep telling myself.

Funny this thread came up. I've recently been faced with this issue for the first time.

I use this technique interviewing Mike Newell yesterday (sorry about the name dropping- he was super nice, by the way!): place your mp3 player by the phone (doesn't matter if it's landline or not), choose 'mic' (I use a creative zen, but many mp3s also have a dictaphone facility), put your phone on loudspeaker and then just yap away. The dictaphone/mp3 player will pick up everything. Just make sure you have the volume on both up nice and high.

It's low-tech, but it works and is dependable. You can use it for the next horror icon you land an interview with!

I've been recording phone interviews via speakerphone for years.

I used speaker phone during my first interview and my recorder didn't pick up a word of the actresses side of the conversation. All I could hear was my dying frog voice. It was fucking embarrassing. Since then I've only done email interviews.

Perhaps I just have a shitty tape recorder.
