Games you HAD to stop playing... - Page 3

When I was a kid and teenager, just about everything scared me. The sound in particular in the first Medal of Honor game scared the living shit out of me. Hearing Germans yelling and dogs barking, combined with just how eerily realistic the gun sounds were had me wanting to jump out of my skin.

Have just played through both Condemned games in about a week (dunno how I missed them for so long - and they're dirt cheap now as well!), there's plenty of bits people have already mentioned, but in that department store towards the end there's a bit where every time you turn round, there's a row of mannequins blocking your path that weren't there 2 seconds ago that elicited a loud, firm "FUCK that" from me and freaked me out enough to pause it and shut all the windows at home... The bastards do it again to you in the 2nd one as well!!!

Also - if I pull out my briar pipe and slippers, going back a hideously long time to Silent Hill 1 on the PS1 - I'd never played a game like it at the time, being amazed at how atmospheric a game could be... walking round the spooky fairground REALLY got under my skin. Still get freaked out by new Silent Hill games as soon as I pop them in, just because I know what's coming!!! (although heard fairly faint praise for the new one...)

Ive never had to stop playing a game for any particular reason. Doom 3 for definitely made me tense though. Its the first time I really felt claustrophobic in a game and thought death was around every corner. I would only play it late at night with somebody with me.

While the Shalebridge Cradle is indeed a masterpiece of unholy terror (and the only time I actually had to stop and have a beer to calm down from a game), the Return to the Cathedral in the original Thief is much more memorable to me.

My experience was fairly unique, though, in that I stumbled upon the Keeper Grotto in The Haunted Cathedral without ever actually making it to the cathedral proper, so when I got to RTC I just stuck the talismans in the door, opened the second set of doors and was greeted by a room full of zombies and these evil skull faced sword wielding cackling monsters taken straight from my nightmares that I'd never seen before. 'Oh fuck that' says I, closing the door immediately. But it's too late, and when I go down a side passage one of the haunts opens the door, charges straight at me and stabs me to death while I'm panicking, fumbling at the keyboard trying to get some holy water arrows to kill it.

Sums up this thread nicely.

When I was a grad student at Yale working alone in a basement lab late one night, I decided to take a break by playing Infocom's The Lurking Horror, which is, of course, a horror game about a student in an old Ivy League college who happens to be alone in a building late at night. Did not make walking by the centuries-old graveyard on the way back to my car very pleasant.
