I <3 Planet Terror

This is one of the most entertaining movies I've seen in a long time. I know I missed the boat on conversation for this flick, but I finally watched it last night (after the genius that is "Machete!") and was just blown away. As much as I liked Death Proof, Planet Terror is a TRUE homage to the kinds of movies I watched as a kid, but the homage doesn't stop with grindhouse flicks. It was also a John Carpenter fest (the whole Zulu scenario), with shades of Aliens, Texas Chainsaw, tons of seminal genre flicks got paid a loving tribute.

I've always liked Rodriguez, from his El Mariachi days onward, but he knocked it out of the park with this movie. His sensibilities are tailor made for the grindhouse vibe, and I think it's his best film. There wasn't a moment when I wasn't completely entertained. I hope he makes more movies like it.
I still think Sin City is his best, but this is a close second. I've never cared for anything of his, really, other than admiring what he did with five pesos on El Mariachi.
I still feel From Dusk Till Dawn is his best work. Planet Terror was highly entertaining and fit well within what they were trying to accomplish. I'm not sure what was changed with the DVD release, but I loved the theater production.
Yeah, I haven't seen the DVD version of Planet Terror, but I loved the shit out of Grindhouse. The Planet Terror half of the film was a complete blast, and I loved that it was basically a riff on Carpenter flicks. Of the two films, though, I'm definitely more of a Death Proof fan (that one I have seen on DVD, and while I prefer the theatrical cut, I still dig the hell out of it).
I fucking <3 this movie. Way too much badassery on display here.
Probably one of the few movies I sat in the theater and got grossed out at times. Who wouldn't after seeing those VD pictures.
Haven't seen PT since I saw Grindhouse opening night, but it was a blast then. I think I can safely second the <3 for this.
Watched it on Starz the other day, and can easily rewatch it over and over - Starz Online (which my cable system DOESN'T carry) is supposedly running Grindhouse in its theatrical form, with ALL the trailers starting this weekend (Starz Cinema will run Grindhouse on April 8th).

Plus Death Proof premieres Saturday night! Right after a rerun of Planet Terror!
I know this has been talked about, but what are the chances of us actually getting the theatrical double-header on one DVD? I still haven't picked up Kill Bill in hopes of the Whole Bloody Affair. Maybe it's time to give up...
The Grindhouse cut is getting released in Japan as part of some huge special edition. Just like Japan got the full color "House Of Blue Leaves" battle. So if you can import, that's your best bet, until a region 1 release. Which may never happen.
I actually think Planet Terror is better in it's extended form(Death Proof, not so much). There are lots of cool little moments and scene transitions that weren't in the Grindhouse cut.
Although I prefer Death Proof overall, Planet Terror is indeed great. Probably my second favorite Rodriguez after Desperado. This is the type of film Rodriguez was born to make, for better or worse. The Carpenter-esque music kicks ass too.

We were talking about it in chat the other night, but they really should have plopped 2 of the fake trailers in front of each release since they split them up. It's the least the Weinsteins could have done. It's too late now, but Thanksgiving and Werewolf Women of the SS(the best and the worst trailers) should have been in front of this, with Machete and Don't before Death Proof. Oh well.
I dunno Nexus, I loved the transition the trailers provided between the end of Planet Terror and the beginning of Death Proof in the theater. But with the home theater aspect, I think you're right.

I'd say that both of them are fun as hell, but the Carpenteresque vibe in Planet Terror is just so fun to revisit. It's Big Trouble in Little China all over again, but without a LoPan. Aww...no LoPan...
Being of the group that hasn't seen this since Grindhouse in the theater, does the extended Planet Terror include the missing reel?
Nope. There's still a Missing reel.

The missing reel is one of PT's many layers of awesomeness because of all the things that get resolved that you don't see. It really captured the convolutedness of so many grindhouse flicks brilliantly!

I loved Death Proof too, but mostly as a Tarantino movie, although it definitely wore its roots on its sleeve. But PT is just pure genre love!
I absolutely loved Planet Terror. I wish I hadn't only seen it on DVD - I know I would have loved the hell out of that on a big screen.
That is the closest we'll get to what a 2007 Carpenter COULD have looked like. I love it.
I did a search for Grindhouse DVD - the rumor is June for the theatrical cut stateside (no bonus features, just the theatrical cut and trailers). One story here, says we may get Hobo with a Shotgun as well.
I haven't seen Death Proof yet, but saw Planet Terror a few weeks ago, and I can't say much that hasn't been said already. I have only the barest knowledge of grindhouse flicks (I was too young in the 70's to really see many except cannibalized all to hell on TV, but I do recall seeing the one where the Hell's Angels go to 'Nam that Fabienne is watching in Pulp Fiction), but I know enough to get the gist, and PT was just about a perfect archetypal homage to the grindhouse flicks of yore. The missing reel made me laugh out loud, 'cause I could so just PICTURE the old State Theatre in Jersey City having that kind of a problem. Along with the trailers and the grainy film quality, this added to the whole exprience. It's definitely genius in its way.

I hope we get an actual MACHETE movie before Trejo is swallowed whole by his own poc marks. I need more Fahey/Trejo drama.

I just watched this and it was amazing. I don't think I've yelled at the screen so much ever. I really wish I had seen this in the theater. Such an improvement over the dull and lifeless SIN CITY. Redemption for Rodriguez!
Those who didn't catch Grindhouse in the theaters really missed something. They are alright on their own but watching both films back to back with all the extra trailers and throwback theater logos was just awesome. How I wish they would make more "Grindhouse" films. Talk about what could have been.
They're kind of still making this generation's grindhouse films, but now they're going DTV. THAT'S a damn shame. I know me and my pals would have a few beers and go to a theatre w/ a grindhouse double bill every now & then (familial obligations permitting). But, big a hit as this film was, and as big a groundswell of nostalgia & longing as it caused, I don't see it revamping a whole industry to start making theatrical productions for what used to be called the "drive in movie crowd". Maybe it's misplaced nostalgia in part that causes me to like the After Dark Horrorfest so much every year?

Yeah, the release date really fucked Grindhouse theatrically. I think it would have done pretty well as a Halloween release. I felt it was marketed pretty well, but I found a lot of people were totally clueless about the fact it was a double feature.
Yeah, maybe I blanked on the box office but did this not get a wide release? How did so many people not see it in the theater? I know I live in NYC, but it seemed like the buzz around this movie was huge and everyone I know said they attended packed theaters.

Theater I saw it on a Friday night was jampacked. But that was all the Tarantino/Rodriguez fans in Indianapolis. That was it, nobody else cared.
Saw this opening night at a large-ish theater in Denver, packed. Went back two days later to see it again, empty.

It got a decent sized release. The kiss of death was Easter weekend. Many of the geek crowd saw it opening night, and some just said "oh I'll wait for video"(big mistake). I don't think anyone else really went.
My theater was only 1/5 full the night after release. It was still a fun time though.

Yeah I heard about that. I hope they do a North America Release, i hate the huge costs of buy imports.

I refuse to buy the DVDs seperatly. Because the whole grindhouse experience was just soooo awesome. With the trailers, and old logos, and even a 60s "lets all go to the lobby and buy snacks!" ad!
I haven't seen the extended cuts of the two films, but I did love Grindhouse. I actually didn't see it in a theater, though. I saw it at my hotel in Las Vegas back in the summer. I got kind of sick one night, so I figured I'd just stay in since we had so many nights left to do some damage. The hotel was offering Grindhouse, so I got it. I'm glad I did considering no one can buy this version right now in any local store.
Saw the theatrical cut on Starz OnDemand last night. Not quite the same as seeing it in the theatre (which is an experience I'm grateful to have had), but it was still awesome.

And I totally forgot how gruesome PT was. So fucking great.
I loved PT because it reminded me why I loved the Resident Evil games and how the RE movies just missed it all together. If there ever was a remake or "re-imagining" of the series for film look to this as a example of how it's supposed to be done.

Easter weekend, 3 hours long, Hard R, honoring movies that had late night start times, it was doomed in that slot. I think there's a part in Planet Terror where they mention the current date and they say April 13th/14th which is the week after it's release so maybe they originally had it set following Easter and took a gamble and failed.

Planet Terror's a fun trip, it's the lesser of the two but it still has some great Carpenter-esque moments and Josh Brolin rocking the zombie. I recommend picking up the making of book on Grindhouse, I pulled it off the shelf and gave it a good flip-through reading the thread.

I can't wait for the special edition despite owning both separately [2 for $20 used], the LP disc art on the theatrical cut is fantastic. I like both directors cut in some places* but PT has some bits I can do without such as Savini shooting that one patient outside the hospital.

*[Anyone else notice in Death Proof, when Mike snaps the second set, he shouts "GOT IT"? That ain't in the theatrical version, he also did away with an exchange between the girls after Bell says she's okay from the first car chase.]
"That boy's got the devil in him" Peerless brilliance in 6 easy words. Oh, and a glance, there was certainly a glance.
I loved Planet Terror from start to finish and feel that, alongside Sin City, it is Rodriguez's best work to date (though he's made other great films as well). It's a shame that he has yet to get a greenlight on his supposedly balls-to-the-wall remake of Barbarella, as I suspect it will be in exactly the same vein. I hope he's able to get it made at some point, as well as the Sin City sequels (which should happen when Frank Miller's schedule is free again). As it stands though, I believe he'll be doing a kid's flick called Shorts next........as well as supposedly finishing up Machete sometime soon as well (God, I hope so!).

Hopefully he can get a few more hits under his belt over the next few years so that Barbarella can become a reality!
How can the original Barbarella be overshadowed, retro cheese rarely survives translation. Not against language or time. Duran Duran indeed, I suppose the new heroine would look for Linkin Park Linkin Park. Ick.
Planet Terror was a glorious gory fun blast that if released in the 80's I'm sure would be a classic today (Yes, I know it would have been made differently in the 80's).

As for Rodriguez's next: Machete, all the way.
I love PLANET TERROR too. I've watched it a lot recently. I saw it in the theater of course, a few times. I didn't like DEATH PROOF so much in the theater, in fact for repeated viewings, I didn't stick around for it. But I've grown to like it as background music on DVD.

Wish we would get the nice DVD set in the USA.
If you loved Planet Terror, and you own a Nintendo Wii, you owe it to yourself to buy or rent House of the Dead: Overkill.
Do you know if you need a special dingus for the Wii to play that one? Or can you just use what the Wii came with?
Agreed, this is one of the most entertaining flicks I've ever seen and I love it. Up there with Sin City and From Dusk Til' Dawn as Robert Rodriguez's best. Fantastic.

I enjoyed it more than either Sin City or Dusk Til Dawn. DTD doesn't hold up well at all in repeat viewings and Sin City just seems a bit off since they followed the source material too closely in my opinion. But Planet Terror is great, I recommend it to everyone since a lot people missed it. I expected it to be mediocre and wasn't thrilled with the leads, but I loved it after watching it.
The movie is great but the DVD is lacking in that it doesn't have all the fake trailers. Or the shorter "theatrical cut" version of the movie
post #46 of 48
I got that Wii zombie game and it is pretty great. Did they payoff the Weinstein Company to make that?

Yeah. Pretty much. I still enjoy both features but there is nothing quite like seeing them both on the big screen with the extra trailers. One of the best times I've had watching a movie. Death Proof has kind of lost some replay value for me but it's still a good show all-around.

I assume you mean The House of the Dead: Overkill, which is a pretty snazzy shooter. Wet for PS3 and 360 has had a similar "Grindhouse" ad campaign, which makes very little sense considering the demo I played.

Grindhouse bombing was all poor marketing and a bad release date. This could have been a franchise. I love both films for different reasons, and I love 3/4 of the trailers(sorry Rob).

*edit- gobblox beat me to the game.
