Can American McGee really be taken seriously after Bad Day LA?

I stayed clear of that one, and enjoyed Alice and Scrapland enough to give this a shot. Was it really as bad as I heard?

I don't put much stock in ign's game reviews, but they were absolutely on the mark on Bad Day LA. It was pretty bad - not two worlds bad - it made me question any of the mags (oxm/pc gamer) that praised it in previews before release. I guess they too loved Alice/Scrapland and gave the guy a pass.

If you're interested in what went wrong with Bad Day LA, listen to the GFW Radio weekly podcast - 02/22/2008 where they interview McGee. He's very candid about the failure of the game.

Personally, I thought Alice was ridiculously overhyped, and really, not all that original or interesting. Once you got past the gimmick and the art design, it was just a collection of FPS puzzles. I really didn't find it very compelling. And yet, the guy is still some kind of rock star who merits above-the-line credit.

Thanks for the heads up on that podcast. While it was pretty cool hearing him own up to some of the games failures (the game engine/money) he doesn't explain why the writing in the game was filled with unfunny characters and dialog.

Seems like a cool enough person in the interview. I really hope he did learn some lessons from that epic fail.

The art, level design, music, voices, and "gimmick" were pretty excellent. That the gameplay itself was perfectly adequate was more like a bonus.

Why McGee gets to be a 'name brand' I have no real idea. Of his three games, I only actually played Alice, so I don't know if there's any kind of common thread there (quality art direction? great level design?)

The gameplay sounds sort of like a twisted version of de Blob.

Somewhat. You're not just changing the color of things as you go along, though- you're completely shifting the landscape. Every object has a "dark side" to it and can be corrupted.
