I think we're looking at this the wrong way. They say gamma rays would flood the Earth and need I remind you what the leads to? Oh yes, that's right:

THE HULK!

Don't you love how almost all of these "SOLAR ATTACK! THE SUN WILL EXPLODE! METEOR SHOWERS HIT THE EARTH!" stories always have that moment at the end where scientists say "Yes, in millions of years, this could very well happen!"

I hope that if we're all doomed to die, it's because of some galactic level catastrophe, rather than some dumb war or virus. Personally, I'm rooting for all of the gravity in the universe reversing itself (but that's if I had to choose something).

These stories always remind me of a joke I read somewhere; it may even have been an Archie comic way back when I was little. But I'll paraphrase:

Teacher: In about five billion years the sun will go supernova and the Earth will be completely destroyed.
Kid: WHAT?
Teacher: don't worry, it's not for another five billion years!
Kid: Oh, thank Christ! I thought you said five million years.
