nail biting

I used to never bite my nails except for short periods in grade school during the times I transfered to a new school.

Ever since college, I haven't been able to stop biting my nails for more than a few days at a time.

I started this thread in an attempt to gain and or lose moral support on the issue.

I am currently not chewing my nails and I will try my best to not jack with them for 30 days. Hopefully by that time I will have rid myself of this bad habit.

It's tough though, I caught myself several dozen times yesterday starting to pick at my finger nails.
Did the chewing happen to start in Dec. 2000?
I'm with you. I've been a chronic nail biter since... well, as long as I can remember. I don't even think about it most of the time, I just do it.

I stopped a couple days ago and it's been tough... I too have found myself picking at them a few times.

I will make the 30 day pledge as well.

Ba dum dum.

Don't fret, billy, you are not alone in your habit! Been doing it for as long as I can remember. Mostly just to keep em at a normal length.

Chewing your fingernails ain't that bad. You might need to question yourself when your down to chewing your toenails.

It is quite possible. I was knee deep in college at the time.

Never really a nail biter. My big problem as a kid was picking my butt in my sleep. It was insane. I'd wake up some mornings and if not for the smell you'd have thought I ate a cake with no fork.

I think this needs its own thread.

While I'm being honest, this is the first time I've ever told anyone. People have commented about my shitty nails before, but I never told anyone I go rabid on them.

Oh man. I had a friend who did this. Sleepovers were hilarious.

I think nail biting is one of the most disgusting habits, mostly because the people I know who do this have gone well beyond nail biting and basically eat their fingers. They have bleeding nail beds all the time and their cuticles look like a war torn country. It's vile.
I tried nail biting once and I couldn't even bite through my nail. So I stopped. Although I did have a friend who did bite his toenails. And then would proceed to swallow. Thank god I moved away from that guy. It was fucking gross.

I'm glad you found it funny. You want some more laughs? How about the thought of me sleeping for 5 months with oven mitts on in order to break my filthy habit? God, I'm so stressed right now. Please no relapse, please no relapse.

When you think of how many doorknobs and faucets and things you touch all day (especially if you live or work in a city, or with Moltisanti), putting your fingers in your mouth and chewing up your nails along with the bacteria that collects there is fucking disgusting. That thought is what cured me.

There's also this stuff:

The skin above my cuticles looks like shredded cheese.

The threat of bacteria and that stuff only worked for a few days.

Move in with Moltisanti.

I used to bite my nails. And it was tough because they're really thick and very very strong. I don't know what it is that makes fingernails but I got a goddamn abundance of it. I stopped biting my nails when I actually chipped a tooth on one of them.
My cuticles and skin seem to be fine. Guess I only ever bite my nails when they need a good trimming.

Now chewing on pens and pencils, now that's where I fall apart.
Never chewed my nails, I used to pick my nails and cuticles when I was a kid. No wonder they look fucked up now.

You're so sensitive.
I'm with you billy, and I'm down with the 30 day pledge as well. I really have got to stop ravaging my nails, not to mention the flesh around them.
Sensitive to what? I didn't say anyone was a bad person for biting their nails. The fact remains, though, that it is a disgusting habit and should be broken.
It is. Think about how many times you've been in a public or shared rest room and maybe notice that someone walks out without washing their hands. They're using the same door handle you do. Now put those fingers in your mouth? Ugh.
Maybe he meant to say "sensible."

And Molt, that's that's the funniest/most horrific thing I've ever heard.
I'm just saying, there are reasons people do things. You think people bite their nails because they think it makes them look good?

Not so much. Thanks for playing, though.
Never had much of a problem biting my nails, but any problem I did stopped when I got braces and was physically incapable of biting them for about 2 years, and basically still am because of wearing a retainer.

No problem. Is my lovely parting gift a bag of your half-chewed fingernails?

So, hypothetically, were you shitting your pants in your sleep or going knuckles-deep in your sleep? Either outcome is gross.
More like wrist-deep.

And biting nails is still a disgusting habit. We can do this all day...

Edit: You need to separate the behavior from the person. I'm very well aware that tobacco is addictive, but it doesn't make the behavior of smoking any less gross.

This is very true. I was not my affliction. Butt-picking while you sleep is very common among young children. It's normal and does not mean you are destined to become a lieutenant in Satan's army. At least that's what my Mom used to say as she duct-taped the oven mitts to my pajama sleeves.

Yeah, I've never been really open about it before now, your thread inspired me. I got really embarrassed around Christmastime in the mall. This lady walks over from one of those kiosks and grabs my hand, shoves it into her breasts and begins to use some sort of nail buffer on my chewed up thumbnail, trying to sell me on some nail care products. I can only imagine what her reaction to my nail must have been.

I'm not even going near the ass-picking thing.

*SNAP!* I've never bitten my nails *CRACK!* But what I do do *POP!* *CRACK!* Is crack my knuckles. Incessantly. Used to drive my *SNAP!* Drive my mother crazy when I was a kid. She was amazed how much noise I could get out of only *SNAP! SNAP! SNAP!* 10 fingers. I have cut down a bit, in recent years. I chalk it up to less stress in my life. I still do it, because, hey, whose life is stress free, am I right? But I do it a lot less now than I did in say high school. Or law school. Not much of a help, Billy, I know. But if you're on the cusp of finishing siome stressful ordeal (like soon to graduate school, or settling in to a new job, and the learning curve's leveling out maybe, for instance), the habit may abate at least in part on its own.

But what was your rection to her chest? Tit for tat, so to speak.

Sorry. I hadda.

Sorry Iggy, I hope my post didn't come off as a big dismissal of what you are saying. I hope that my life does level out, as I'm tired of moving, tired of switching jobs, etc. But, just recently I had a bomb dropped on me at work.

At least there is one constant in my life, CHUD.

This is me. Been cracking my knuckles since I was six years old. My mother used to yell at me and tell me, "You're knuckles will get HUGE if you do that!", but I never stopped. And how are my knuckles after 38 years of cracking them? Dainty, mofos.

(Besides, it's an old wives tale that cracking your knuckles makes them huge. That noise is the sound of bubbles breaking in the synovial fluid in your joints.)
I bite my nails. They're always neat too. I almost wanna say it's hereditary since my dad is also a nail biter.

I hate it when guys don't trim their fingernails. That's just gross. At least biting your nails keeps the size down but ignoring them all together is 10x worse

I cringe when people crack their knuckles, or backs, or necks. I can't do that and I don't want to.

I do crack my finger joints randomly but never forcefully. If I "claw" up my fingers they'll just make tiny snaps.

A friend of mine can do this with his wrists! If he just flicks his hands upward, his wrists crack - it's pretty weird.

I can do that with my ankles and, oddly enough, my pinky toes.
