nail biting - Page 2

I can do the wrist thing. Annoys the girlfriend, so naturally, I keep doing it over and over.

I find I can, on occasion, crack my hip where the femur attaches to the pelvis. Most satisfying feeling ever when it happens.

I just recently started cracking my neck. It's great fun when I have to throw my head around at all different angles to get it to finally pop.

Yup. Ankles and wrists here too. Have a friend that can crack his back from top to bottom. Sounds like a damn xylophone. It's gross, but funny all at the same time. And I can't imagine what is going on in your sub conscious to bury your hand wrist deep in your butt.

I do, however love the "eating cake with no fork" analogy. Go figure.

Oh I do the hip thing occasionally too. But it's not satisfying - hurts like a motherfucker.

And does anyone else's sternum pop from time to time? I didn't even think it was possible for anything in there to pop, but if I stretch just the right way it happens.

Yeah, that too. I have to be lying down to do it, and so far that means I only do it in bed and can generally hide it from other humans. At least now I know I'm not alone...

Yeah, had that happen to me one day several years ago when lifting weights. Hurt like a sonofa. I think in the process, I damaged connective tissue. It took almost a month to feel normal again.

I got the sternum pops (glad to hear I'm not the only one because it really freaked me out the first time I did it), the hip pops, the jaw cracks, and I will, at times, compulsively do the wrist-crack-thing. Oh, and if I'm not wearing shoes I will flex my toes and crack them like there's no tomorrow. Sometimes if they're not cracking to my satisfaction, I'll press my toes down with my hand and pop them way down in the base of the joints.

I don't bite my nails, but I do have a biting problem - especially when I'm stressed, I bite my lips and the insides of my cheeks. I bite that first dead layer of skin any place where it will come off, and, like the people with the war zone nail beds, I'll often start myself bleeding. And I still won't stop. I've tried to go cold turkey since I read that doing it can increase my risk of oral cancer, but I still go back to biting in a few days.

Wow, that sounds a lot more gross written out like that than I thought it would.

I can crack my sternum once in awhile, too. It's not at all painful, but I was kinda weirded out the 1st time I did it too, since I didn't think there was a joint TO crack there.

When you have a stiff neck or back, somethimes a good crack is the absolute best when it finally happens. A chiropractor friend once grabbed me unexpectedly, & while facing me lifted me off the ground & gave me a bearhu that cracked my lower spine so hard I thought he crippled me; I couldn't move for a few seconds when he put me down, but God-DAMN did my back feel good. . ,.once I got feeling back.

Billy, your post did not come off as dismissive; I took it as the mattr of fact statement it was. I sincerely do hope things calm down for you some day; THAT'S the best way to cure (or curb) a nervous habit.

And Lisa, wait until you and Tim hear my "Addams Family" knuckle symphony at the Jersey Chewers gathering. You're gonna love it!

I knew there'd be entertainment, but....

I don't bite my nails, but I do prefer to tear off the excess rather than use a nail clipper to trim. Same with toenails. Is that weird?

I've been chewing my nails, cuticles, everything since I was a kid...strictly a nervous habit. I'm like a ravenous wolf when I'm writing a screenplay.

I almost never do it in public out of embarrassment. I've tried quitting so many times I've lost count...the thought of bacteria doesn't help.

And I love all the bitching about it being disgusting because of bacteria...ever eaten at a burger joint or any restaurant? You think those people handling your food always wash their hands? That's probably why the thought of bacteria on my fingers doesn't help much...I know you're always getting it from somewhere.

That's me. It's definitely a problem. I try to catch myself whenever I'm doing it but it's a nervous habit and hard to stop. I also chew on my hands hard enough for it to really hurt if I'm upset.

Billy: with the nail-biting thing, the cheapest way I found to stop was to just cut my nails really short. Each morning, so that there's no excess for the rest of the day. The habit was gone within weeks.

With the exception of Moltisanti's, I have at one time or another suffered from each of the aforementioned habits. I don't do the knuckles so much anymore, and the nail-biting was an elementary school thing, but I crack my neck. A lot. And by a lot, I mean constantly. I used to go to a chiropractor and once I stopped, I just felt really achy if I didn't pop something, be it my back or my neck. It's probably not as big a problem as I think it is, but I doubt it's doing me any good either.

Also (though it's not really a habit), every time I wake up from a nap I pop my wrists. I can't do it under normal circumstances and I never really feel the need to at other times. Still - without fail - the moment I wake up from a nap, I push them down and they click. It's the most gratifying part of my nap and I have no idea why.

My wife gets on my case for biting my nails. Recently, I tried to appease her by giving the clippers a shot. I was miserable for at least the next week with really tender fingertips. Plus I have big hands and fingers, so I had to clip each one several times and I ended up with really short, crooked nails.

Not going to try that again any time soon.

I have a friend who chews the skin on the tops of his knuckles as a nervous habit. he just picked this one up within the last 10 yrs or so as ana dult. we fell out of touch for awhile, and I hadn't seen him in a long time, but when we next got together, I was STUNNED at how misshapen and horrible his knucles look now. They're like big, bulbous masses of scar tissue. That CAN'T be good for you.

I regressed a little bit over the weekend. But my picking habit has greatly reduced.

I found this curbs my desire to pick. I believe outside of stress and nervousness causing me to gnash on my nails is because there are jagged bits hanging off.

I need to get extra clippers or a nail file and put them in my car and at work.
