Backup external hard drives

I need an external hard drive and was wondering what are some of the best ones to look at. I want one that is around 500 gigs.

I bought a QNAP TS-101 a while ago. It's a NAS storage unit that has some server functionality. If you are just doing backups, I would recommend a USB or firewire external drive. Much easier to configure and much more portable.

I got a 500gb Western Digital Elements harddrive on black friday for about 90 bucks. What a great purchase. I keep all my "important files" on there.

I got a 500 meg MyBook from Best Buy for about 100 bucks about a year ago. Haven't had a problem with it yet... incredibly easy to use, too. Just plug the usb cable in and you're good to go.

LaCie is another pretty reputable brand for USB external. Not quite as pretty as a MyBook but can be affordable depending on where you get it.

We use almost strictly LaCie. Nice, reliable and sturdy.

I'd definitely go with a MyBook. They have been quite reliable so far. If you have a PC that supports it try getting one with an e-sata interface. It will do wonders for the drive's speed, especially if you're moving large files. Also depending on the model they come with a pretty handy backup utility.

if you wanna make your own I'd use this Icy Dock enclosure with whatever size SATA drive you want to put it in...such as this Seagate 750 gig monster*.

*I'm kinda bummed to see that a lot of folk on newegg have had western digital-esque failure rates with the 500 gig Seagate drives. I wonder if their quality control went into the toilet.

Yeah I noticed a lot of reviews on amazon that said the same thing. I'm leaning towards the mybook.

On topic SimpleTech.

Slightly off topic: best way to backup the data? Using a Sony VAIO, Vista, I wonder if I should stay backing up the files only (with the soft included along the HD) or do a more profound backup?

I bought a WD Passport a year or so ago and the piece of shit broke in a few months. I found out later than these passports are almost all crap and their lousy USB connections don't get enough juice to run properly. Thankfully I was able to recover the data by breaking it open and running off the drive directly hardwired to my PC. So I bought a Seagate drive with its own power supply. The thing works like a champ. Quiet as a whisper, super fast, cool to the touch and extremely responsive. I highly recommend it. I got the 500GB at Costco for a steal.
