Worst case scenario? Dumb people open their mouths less and limit their communication to people in their address book.

I'm failing to see a downside.

I'd probably be lost without texting.

Texting is fantastic. It's quick, efficient and doesn't require me to talk to people I don't feel like talking to. Sure it can be misused, but I'm also not gonna call for the abolishment of phones because of all the solicitors, wrong numbers and crank calls I receive.

I don't find texting to be that much different from talking on the phone, except that it keeps the shit to a minimum.

Also handy from time to time - instant messaging. Not as a replacement for a real conversation, but I love having it when I'm sitting right next to someone. I can have a conversation with my co-worker - who sits directly in front of me - about what complete assholes the other people we work with are. And they're sitting a few feet away.

Score: Jared = 1. Lisa = 0.

Actually, my company's really strict about that - no one is allowed to have instant message on their computer except in special instances; for example, assisants who don't sit that close to their boss' office. And if our boss wants us to have it, there's about a mile of red tape to go through before the company will approve our computer guys installing it for us - it's blocked otherwise. So, we're the only ones in our area who do have it. Of course, that's not to say that our other co-workers can't send emails back and forth about what assholes we're being.

Using instant messaging and email at work for non-work related talk is getting riskier and riskier. A lot of companies have installed monitoring tools that can store all of these conversations. If a complaint is lodged against you, they can have someone rifle through the data to see if there is a history of inappropriate conversations.

The more robust of the anti-spam tools include this functionality. Keeping up with the data is almost impossible, but if you target someone it an be easy to build a case against them via their own private conversations.

I have Gmail open anytime I'm in the office, and Gmail Chat for my IM needs during the work day. It works great, and no program to install. It even lets you log into your AIM names these days.

Easy solution is to use your own mail tools. IE, gmail over SSL.

Edit: What billyg said.

They blocked those at our office, too. No web-based email like yahoo, gmail, etc., no MySpace to send messages - zip. We have precious little choice but to call our co-worker's jack-asses via IM.

Seriously, though - the worst thing we've ever done by IM was, "I can't stand that guy - he's such a jerk." "I know."

Jesus, that's ridiculous. Only things blocked at our office are Youtube, Myspace, and Facebook. And it's only one one of our web servers, so if you're friends with an IT guy, he swaps you to another server, and you have full access to those few sites.

Yeah, those are all blocked too. YouTube wasn't blocked until just a couple of weeks ago. This is another reason why I love my iPhone - I have a mac.com email address, so I can check and reply to my mail from my desk anyway. Most sites, I can wait till I get home to check out, so that's not a big deal. But I hated having my personal mail blocked.

Nothing is blocked at our work. I guess when you work for a internet security company, you have to have access to everything.

It has it's advantages.

Boss: Are you looking at porn?
Me: Yeah. I think there's a new exploit on the website.

Lisa (or anyone), if you need to use a web based IM client, try www.meebo.com

It's a website that lets you log into your IM client (AIM, MSN, Yahoo, & Google) without having it installed on the computer...
